presents…IDLE GOSSIP!

                                                                        October 2002

Idle Tide - A huge success.

What a brilliant day and a great success Idle Tide on 21st Sept was!  Not only did we receive a lot of support for Chris  as he ran the treadmill marathon, but there was  interest from people looking to join a club. We also continued to build our relationship with Kents Health & Fitness Centre and with the Symposium. In addition we built up our profile within the Community, both in Idle itself and further afield. It was wonderful that so many members were able to attend, help, or just send messages of support.

Chris completed the marathon in a time of  3.00.12 and we managed to raise over £350 for Candlelighters. In addition we raised over £40 for club funds.

Congratulations to Alison’s parents - Marjorie and Reynell who won first and second prize by correctly guessing Chris’s finishing time.

The West Yorkshire Winter League.

After ten years the West Yorkshire Winter League is now affiliated to NoEAA and UK:Athletics. A copy of the WYWL Constitution is available on our website or copies are available from Chris and Davina.  Chris is the Secretary of the WYWL and Davina is the Treasurer, Andy Barrett from Pudsey Pacers is the Chairman.

Since the League has affiliated it’s important that runners who intend to run the WYWL races MUST be paid up first or second claim members. Therefore its important that any ‘prospective’ members who intend running for Idle AC in the WYWL join soon!.

In addition it has been agreed that any members currently serving team competition bans (those who have recently changed clubs) will count for Idle AC.

We can now confirm that there are 8 clubs that form the WYWL: Idle A.C, Pudsey Pacers, Skipton A.C., Leeds & Bradford Tri, Dewsbury Road Runners, Baildon Runners, Stainland Lions and St.Bede’s.  The fixtures for 2002/3 are confirmed as follows:

1          17th Nov 02     Dewsbury.

2          15th Dec 02      Pudsey - Festive event with optional fancy dress and silly hat competition.

3          19th Jan 03       Stainland

4          9th Feb 03        St.Bede’s

5          23rd Feb 03      Skipton

All the above races will start at 11 am, with the exception of the 3rd event at Stainland, which  will start at 10.30 am. They are all around 4-5 miles of mixed terrain. Further details will be circulated prior to each event.

ALL club members are strongly encouraged to run the events in the WYWL. Please note that club kit (vests and black shorts/bottoms) should be worn. In this team competition officials and other athletes must be able to identify us easily.

Veterans Captain named.

We are delighted that Steve Little has volunteered for the role of Vets Captain. In addition to being a vet himself, Steve is a very experienced distance runner who has run all distances and over all terrain. We  will be contacting the Yorkshire Vets Athletic Association and passing on Steve’s details as the contact person for Idle AC.  Steve’s role will include liaising with the club’s vets and encouraging participation in events, monitoring age categories of members, and organisation of the Vets team during West Yorkshire Winter League events. In addition Steve has loads of ideas (not to mention routes!) and we know that he will be a real asset in this role. At present Idle AC has the following vets: Kay Gambles, Davina Smith, Martin Burnside, Peter Helliwell, Dave Currie, Amnuay Scott, Kay Gartland, John Gambles, Tony Blythe, Brian Tayor, Pauline Athwal, David Lewis, and Steve himself. Unless members have any objections we would therefore like to pass on members’ details to Steve.

Training at the club.

Tuesday nights continue to prove the most popular night when the club offers coached hill and speed sessions. It’s wonderful to see 16+ members attending these sessions. Chris has now moved the Tuesday Early Birds session to 6pm, with the main club session starting at 7 pm.

New members:

The membership of the club is steadily increasing month by month. Idle A C now has 31 members (including 3 second claim members) and  we  welcome David Lewis, Donna Edmondson, John Nellist, Sandra Duarte and Matthew Coles who have all joined as first claim members.

Christmas Party:

We have booked the Symposium (Idle) for 20 for the club’s first Christmas celebration on Friday 13th December. We will have the ‘snug’ at the back to ourselves (which will be snug with 22 people in it!). Chris has paid for the deposits and therefore he urgently needs the £5 deposits from each member who said that they were going. As we booked by the end of September, each person qualifies for a free half bottle of decent red or white wine. We plan to have a raffle, a bit of a quiz, and to trim up the room with Idle AC photos etc. Anyone who isn’t coming for the meal might like to join us for a drink later in the evening.

Horsforth 10K: Official Launch of the Vests!

We had an excellent turn out for the Horsforth 10k on Sunday 29th Sept as the team shot shows. We really made our mark  and were acknowledged by a lot of the local clubs. Congratulations to Adrian, Alison and Pauline who all ran a race for the first time, and obviously all ran pb’s. In addition Club records were achieved by Chris Stubbs (open male), Donna (open female) and Kay (F40). Ian Fisher came second in the race in a time of 32.07.

Individual results were as follows: Chris Stubbs 39.46, Chris Smith 41.16, Edward East 43.26, Adrian Trevelyan 44.28, Peter Helliwell 44.49, Donna Edmondson 44.55, Peter Vickers 47.42, Kay Gambles 48.58, Davina Smith 50.28, Alison Garlick 51.28, Martin Burnside 53.51, Amnuay Scott 54.15, and Pauline Athwal 1.07.26.

Club Kit

We still have a limited number of the distinctive Idle A C vests which are £14. In addition we have a further supply of Idle AC T-shirts at £6.50 each.  We can also offer black microfibre unisex running shorts (“More Mile” brand from Start Fitness) at £7 each. These have an innerbrief and key pocket. Please see Chris if you would like to order a pair in sizes S-M-L-XL.

We have now ordered the  Idle AC fleeces  and these  will cost approx. £22 each.  (See design on left) We should have these in 4-5 weeks, but certainly in time for the first cross country.

Website Update:

Now that Martin has invested in a good quality digital camera the club will be able to continue to put event

                                                                                 photos onto the website.

Monthly Competition:

In September at Idle Tide we launched the club’s monthly competition. The questions for the October competition are as follows:

1. In September 2002 Idle AC had a record turnout at a recent local 10k event.

a. What was the event called ?

b. How many CLUB MEMBERS ran in the race ?

2.     Who won this year's Great North Run & what was his exact finishing time?

The closing date is 31st October 2002 and entries from members and non members can be entered directly via the website or via a post card to Chris Smith.

Events at Hepworth and Idle Cricket Club:

The cricket club is having a bonfire on Saturday 2nd November 2002 when the bonfire will be lit at 6pm. Although its the evening before a club race, the Guy Fawkes 10 miler, it would still be an ideal opportunity for Idle AC members and their families to go along for an hour or two and join in the bonfire festivities.

Footwear and Injuries

Chris became a little concerned after conversations with some members about the aged and decrepit state of their running shoes. After 3 - 6 months depending upon mileage, a pair of running shoes are likely to lose much of their cushioning protection as the EVA midsole compresses. This will inevitably lead to injury.  A few reminders below are pulled from the advice on the club’s website.  Please treat your skeleton to a new set of running shoes, and don’t get injured by knackered old shoes with no cushioning this near to the cross country season!

Running Shoes:

Although you do not have to spend a great deal of money (I never spend more than £30 a pair) it is important that if you are taking up running, that you buy running shoes, as these are designed specifically for the demands of the sport - the best shoe is the one that you don’t notice that you are wearing!  The cushioning within a running shoe is important as the repetitive forward motion of running puts a great strain on your body. Your running shoes are your first line of defence. In short, they are designed to minimise two things: shock and instability.

Tips when buying Shoes:

1.       Select a reputable retailer, preferably one who specialises in running shoes.

2.       Set a budget and stick to it.

3.       Go in an afternoon. Your feet swell up during the day and will more closely resemble their running shape than first thing in the morning.  Take along your running socks and try the two together.

4.       Thoroughly check inside any model you select. Look for raised ridges or loose stitching which could irritate your feet.

5.       Put on both shoes, run about the shop (yes, I mean it!) and ensure they fit properly when you are in motion. There should be a narrow space between the big toes and the end of the inside of the shoe.

6.       Remember that if the shoes don’t feel good in the shop, they won’t feel good on the road.

7.       If in doubt ask for advice.

Footwear For Cross Country Races

In some off road races you may well be able to get away with a regular pair of running shoes, but as soon as the terrain gets muddy or slippery, you will be in great danger of injury and certainly will get very frustrated at falling over and not making progress.

For the committed cross country or fell runner the best choice is studded running shoes. The outsole has sharp pyramid shaped rubber type studs all over it which provide effective traction on mud and soft grass.  Spikes are not really recommended for the mixed terrain type races which we tend to encounter.  Studs  can be expensive, the “Walsh PB” for instance retailing at around £55 at Sportshoes, The Complete Runner at Ilkley, or Pete Bland Sports in Kendal.  Cheaper “trail running” shoes can be obtained at places like Sportshoes in Bradford, or Triangle at Horsforth.  These will have a sole with a decent grip, though it may clog more easily than Walsh pyramid studs and thus lose traction.  A multi purpose alternative if you do not wish to really commit yourself is to buy a pair of Saucony road shoes. Look out for the ones with triangular lugs all over the outsole. They can provide adequate traction when new, and then be used as road shoes.  Try the Saucony Jazz 5000 or Lady Jazz 5000.  These are highly acclaimed in their own right as road shoes.

We will make sure that some off road shoes are on display at the club to show people in  the next couple of weeks, and there will certainly be opportunities to train off road!
