Next chance to get points is by running at Blackpool on 22nd June.
This additional informal training
continues to meet on Wednesdays during the summer and is of particular benefit
to members/prospective members who were new to running, coming back after
illness/injury etc. All the runs will be
at a slow, easy pace and a short distance.
Davina will act as an initial contact for this informal session, which
will be free and will be run from Hepworth & Idle Cricket club at 7pm
(outside the ground on match nights). Please contact Davina for further
information.
The second race of the Black Sheep
series saw 7 Idle AC line up for the start at the Melmerby 10k on Sunday 25th
May. A relatively flat course saw Kay set a new F45 club record in a time of
48.22. In addition decent times were run by Chris, Steve, Peter H, Peter V
(another pb) and Amnuay. Davina was also
able to ‘jog’ round at the back.
The third race was the Kirkby Malzeard 10k on 7th
June. Again 7 idle AC members took part and the results were: 18th
Chris – 39.06, 27th Steve –41.02, 36th Edward – 42.10,
111th (11th woman) Amnuay – 49.56, 117th (14th
woman – 50.50, 135th Michael 53.49, Davina 65.43.
Well done to the women’s team: Amnuay,
Kay and Davina who finished 3rd.
Many members are taking part in Chris’s ‘course’ of fell races, which, gradually increase in difficulty. To those first time fell runners who indicate an interest and who progress on the course, certificates will be awarded as follows:
Level One: Single Bunny Level Two: Multiple Bunny
Level Three: Bunny plus Hare and Hounds. Level Four: Bunny, Hounds, Chevin
Level Five: Bunny, Hounds, Chevin, Widdop, Arncliffe
The course is as follows:
1. Bunny Run (1st, 7th, 15th, 22nd April). A good turn out for all these races.
2. WED MAY 7th HARE & HOUNDS FELL RACE. BS. 7.30 pm 4.5 miles/600’ from the Hare & Hounds, Lothersdale near Skipton. £3 on night. Again a strong turn out from both men and women who ran this race.

Please see Chris if you are interested.
In addition to the races above the club would encourage members who are interested to run some of the lower level fell races although it must be stressed that safety on the fells is of prime importance and members are reminded of the FRA safety requirements:
IMPORTANT NOTICE - FRA SAFETY REQUIREMENTS
With effect from 1st January 2003 Rule 9 in the
FRA Safety requirements has changed.
" 9 - EQUIPMENT
Competitors should arrive at races prepared to carry any or all of the
following equipment :-
Windproof whole body cover.
Other body cover appropriate for the weather
conditions.
Map and compass suitable for navigating the
course.
Whistle.
Emergency food (long races).
These requirements constitute 'best practice'
and are mandatory at all Category A Long and Medium races.
In the event of settled fine weather, confirmed
by a local weather report, the organiser may decide to waive some
of the above requirements at Category A Short races.
Organisers must ensure that whatever
requirements they specify on the day are met by holding complete or random
checks before the start of the race and at the end of the race."
So, the Race Organiser no longer has the
discretion to waive any of the equipment requirements above in long and
medium races. Please speak to Chris
for further advice.
Fell Races:
A number of Idle AC
members took to the fells during May/June, including The Jack Bloor Fell Race
(5.2 miles) – Tony –57.02; Hutton Roof
Crag Fell Race (7miles) Chris 1.01, Tony 1.06.
We had a team at
the Chevin Fell Race (3 miles) – Richard 23.13, Tony – 23.59 and Simon-25.36.
Note: A list of local fell races in 2003 is available at the club or
on the website.
West Yorkshire Winter League Canal
Relay – Saturday 31st May 2003.
We had two teams in the Canal Relay:
Team 1:
1.Chris Smith and Steve; 2. David L and Ian; 3.
Pete V. and Edward; 4. Donna and Tony; 5. Donna and Amnuay. Team 1 finished 3rd place in a time of 2.11.00
Team 2:
1. Matt C and Simon, 2. John and Richard, 3. Peter V and Trevor, 4. Peter V and Edward, 5. Janet and Davina. Team 2 finished in 7th place in a time of 2.25.15
We decided not to put a men’s team in
the Millennium Way Relay, hosted by St.Bede’s AC on Sunday 15th June
03 as it was felt to be too near to the Canal relay where were had two teams
and the week before Blackpool marathon.
On 10th June 2002 we achieved our initial goal to affiliate Idle AC and in celebration of that 8 of us doned our Idle AC T-Shirts (the first time we could offically wear them!) and we ran the Bronte 5 race at Haworth.
One year on 13 club members went back to Haworth (12th June) to again run the Bronte 5 but also to celebrate Idle AC ‘offically’ being one year old.
Despite the hilly terrain, the warmth of the evening and the miggies, we were able to field 13 runners, break 4 club records and for some members to break their pb’s.
The results were:
26th Chris Stubbs 31.02 Male Club record.
54th Chris Smith 33.13.
63rd Edward East 34.15
70th Tony Blythe 35.05 M45 Club record.
84th Peter Vickers 36.12.
95th Simon Bellwood 36.56 M40 Club record.
96th Glen Pinkney 37.03.
120th Trevor Hooley 40.34
121st Jo Belcher 40.46 Female Club
record.
125th Amnuay Scott 41.32
131st Michael Masleszco 42.24.
133rd Martin Burnside 42.49.
142nd Davina Smith. 54.44. Last but
pleased to be still ‘running’.
As members are aware
Idle AC offers all members the opportunity to race in road, trail, fell,
cross-country and relay races. In addition we are fortunate to have two members
namely Donna and John who regularly compete in Tri and Duathlon’s.
Both recently
competed in the Burnsall Duathlon where Donna finished second woman and John
finished as 25th man.
Any members who are
interested to having a go at a Triathlon are invited to take part in the Ilkley
Triathlon on Sunday 21st September at Ilkley swimming Pool at 12
noon. The swin of 500metres is followed by a 9 mile cycle and then a 3 mile run
and is suitable for ‘novices’. Entries are limited to 250 and the fee is £16.
Entry forms are available at the club.
However be aware that this will be a
busy weekend for the club as on Saturday 20th September we take part,
as a club, in Idle Tide. More details to follow in the July Gossip.
We will have 4 ‘away’ runs during this summer,
two on Thursday’s and two on Sunday’s.
The dates are as follows:
Sunday 20th July – Away run
from Bolton Abbey at 10am. Further details to follow. It would be helpful if we can double up on
cars/all help with lifts etc.
Thursday 31st July – run
with Pudsey Pacers from the Pudsey Leisure centre at 7pm. This will be an off road ‘treasure’ hunt. Afterwards all are
invited to join Pudsey for a drink in the bar where there will be a buffet,
quiz and raffle. We will need to let Pudsey know the numbers for catering
therefore if you are going please let Chris/Davina know by 21st
July.
Thursday 3rd July – Away run
from Shipley Glen (Car park behind Glen pub) at 7pm. It would be good to
call for a drink after the run.
Sunday 17th August – Away
run from ????? at 10am. Please all submit
suggestions to any Committee members no later than Monday 14th July
and we will hold a draw for the venue.
Davina & Chris can both highly recommend
this event, which takes place on Sunday 14th September at 10am
(7.30am for walkers) from Oxenhope. New
for 2003 is the Yorkshireman Half marathon. If anyone is interested see Chris
as a pre-race recce is recommended. Entries are available at the club or visit
Keighley & Craven AC’s website at: www.keighleyandcravenac.co.uk.
Entries close 6th September.

hits. The most popular time of the day
for visiting Idle AC is 22:00 taking 13% of the total hits.
It’s still the race results pages that are
generating a lot of interest with popular races being the Leeds Half Marathon,
John Carr series and the bunny runs. Our
announcements page is also still very popular.
The race results service is getting so popular I
even had an email from a runner who wanted me to provide her with her result
for the Wakefield 10K race she recently competed in. When I helped her out it was nice to find out
that the reason she contacted me was because when she searched for the results
Idle AC was top of the list !!!!
It’s also nice to see some people looking at the
archived races from last year. I can
only assume it’s to find out what time they ran last year’s relevant race, so
they have a target for this year.
What is surprising is that Donna Edmondson has
found herself right back up in the “Hits Chart”. Last month she accounted for 5% of the
searches being for her name. This month
she is top search with nearly 16% of the overall searches. The next searches the Manchester marathon
& then the Blackpool marathon taking only 5% & 3% respectively. Well done Donna.
We haven’t had any international interest for a
few months but this month we have been on a world tour for some reason, with
interest from the following countries:-

The ongoing photo album has made progress this
month & there’s a link to the first set of photos published. There’s a small prize available to the first
person to email me in with the race that these photos relate to. The trick is to find the link – it’s fairly
obvious if you look around the site.
Any comments on the photo album or any other
part of the website are gladly welcome – constructive or otherwise. I’ve always got a sympathetic ear.
Nobody has reported any issues looking at the
xml type pages so I will continue my conversion there.
"Members' Profiles" – Again nothing
forthcoming.
That's all folks - Keep Browsing. - Martin.
Please remember to get your entries in for the Blackpool marathon and half marathon on Sunday 22nd June 2003 if you’re coming on the big trip! We have had a big response from club members and really want to try and get most members running either the half or full. Entry forms are available at the club.
Please support the Hepworth & Idle cricket
Club when they stage their first Idle Beer Festival on the weekend of 27th
– 29th June. See Chris if you are interested (particulary on the
Friday evening), entry £1. In addition volunteers to serve, clear, wash-up etc
are needed on the Saturday tea time whilst the cricket is on. Chris will be
doing this so do come and join him.
Thanks to all members who paid their membership renewals so promptly. Please remember to complete a Membership Renewal form if you’ve not already done so. I still need subs from certain members and it would be good if these could be paid ASAP as we have now paid the NoEAA membership fees and are due to pay Hepworth & Idle cricket club to enable all members to have social membership of the cricket club. Cash or cheques (payable to Idle AC) need to be given to me ASAP, thanks. Davina.
May and June has been a very busy time for our
Vets. Diverse in both distance and type of races, from 5k to ½ marathon, road
to fell race plus an odd relay and race series for good measure. All of which
has born some fruits for individuals and teams.
So here’s a run down, pop pickers, of our poptastic top err 12 results (this line should be read in the voice of Alan Freeman).

This month as our 46th member we
welcome Suzanne Vickers (Peter’s wife). Suzanne is new to running, although not
new to many club members, as she helped with the results at the cross-country
events.
THE SETTING is the Track and Field events at the Seattle Special Olympics in the USA. The crowd look on as a group of young disabled competitors line up for the 100 metres. The gun goes, and the runners set off gamely as best they can, which is obviously rather less than a sprint. In the middle of the field one of the young runners stumbles, falls to the ground, and begins to cry. The line of runners falters on hearing the sound, and then as one they stop and turn round. They all go back to the fallen boy and pick him up. They then link arms and walk across the line together.
I was touched by the story, of course, but led to reflect on the nature of competition. With complete co-operation, is the necessity and point of competition obviated? The result of that great race, the very first London Marathon, sprang into my mind. After battling for the full 26.2 miles of the 1981 race, the Norwegian Inge Simonsen and the American Dick Beardsley agreed to cross the line together, and breasted the tape holding hands, in 2:11.
I began to realise that a balance of co-operation and competition is required, both at an individual and at a team level. As an individual runner in races I am on the lookout for Idle AC runners coming up alongside me. At Kirkby Malzeard for instance it was a huge motivator to know there were club colleagues close behind. The difficulty, as you may know from basic science, is that peripheral human vision is in black and white – thus out of the corner of my eye every colour of club vest coming from behind looks like an Idle vest, which can be horribly stressful.
At team level I was flushed with pride of course after the Canal Relay. At a club level I saw 17 Idle runners take part. As Winter League Secretary I saw 75 league runners participate. I see it at two levels because I want both the Club and the League to flourish. I want us to beat the other League clubs, but not by so much. If they stumble and fall, my instinct is, like that of those disabled runners, to turn around and help them to their feet, if only so that I have the chance to beat them properly.
So it is good that within our own club that we
co-operate, but not completely. In
training and racing there remains a healthy element of rivalry, which when
channelled correctly brings out the very best in us. Yet serving our own individual ends
completely will only take us so far. To
go further we must help others to succeed in theirs.
