Blackpool Marathon: Idle AC Club race for 2003.

We had a good turn out for the Blackpool marathon and half with 15 runners in the half and two in the full. The results were:

Half: Chris Stubbs 1.23.04 (31st), Peter Vickers, 1.32.12 (113th, pb), Dave Lewis 1.33.15 (128th pb), John Nellist, 137.05 (193rd), Steve Little, 1.38.03 (209th), Adrian Trevelyan 1.4.55 (353rd), Simon Bellwood, 1.46.21 (383rd), Trevor Hooley, 1.49.00 (452nd), Amnuay Scott, 1.51.14 (506th), Edward East, 1.51.40 (514th), Martin Burnside, 1.55.05 (620th), Kay Gambles, 1.55.57 (626th), Michael Masleczko, 1.59.10 (683rd), Davina Smith 2.19.17 (1029th) and Janet Burnside 2.24.25 (1064th, pb). There were 1147 runners.

Full: Joanne Belcher: 3.58.33, 12th woman.

The whole weekend was a great success and despite the hot conditions many had very good runs most notably Chris, Peter, Dave and Jo.

Each year we will continue to promote a main club race so do start thinking about what your thoughts are for the 2004 club race.

Chris Smith: 39.13 (26th), Steve 42.18 (62nd), Edward 45.16 (89th), Amnuay 50.11 (158th), Peter Vickers 51.33 (173rd), Kay 52.30 (188th), Davina 61.01 (243rd, ppb!). There were 267 runners.

The fifth and definitely the hardest of the Black sheep series saw 8 Idle AC vests on the start line for the Burn Valley Half marathon on Saturday 5th July.

Chris Stubbs 1.26.17 (18th), Steve 1.36.12 (60th), Chris 1.38.33 (74th), Peter V 1.43.48 (97th), Simon 1.46.18 (114th), Edward 1.47.58 (128th), Amnuay 1.55.44 (173rd), Kay 2.00.51 (205th). There were 288 runners.

The final Black sheep race took place on Sunday 27th July with the Burton Leonard 10k.  We had 8.2 runners taking part, including Amnuay who won a trophy for being 2nd F35.

Although the final race times and series positions have still be to confirmed we are confident that at least Amnuay Scott will have won a series prize (3rd F35 in the series). We plan to run a minibus to the presentation at the Black Sheep Brewery in Masham, which will be on a Sunday late afternoon in mid September. There may be a run involved – more later…

Wednesday Night Runs.

The additional informal training night on a Wednesday’s seems to be going well and is attended by members/prospective members who are new to running or coming back after illness/injury. The runs are at a very easy pace, over shorter distances, and offer a relaxed atmosphere.  Davina continues to act as an initial contact for this informal session. At present Wednesdays are free (Hepworth & Idle Cricket club at 7pm) and it is hoped that prospective members, who are running with the Wednesday group, may decide to join the club at some future point.

Christmas Do! Keep the date free.

We have again booked the Symposium (Idle) for the clubs second Christmas celebration on Friday 12th December. Unlike last year when we booked the ‘snug’ at the back, we have now booked the whole place. Whilst we don’t have a definite price as yet we hope by giving advance notice of the date that all the club, partners and friends will attend.  As with last year we plan to have a raffle and a bit of a quiz.

Fell Races

Many members are taking part in Chris’s ‘course’ of fell races, which, gradually increase in difficulty.  To those first time fell runners who indicate an interest and who progress on the course, certificates will be awarded as follows:

Level One: Single Bunny Level Two: Multiple Bunny

Level Three: Bunny plus Hare and Hounds.  Level Four: Bunny, Hounds, Chevin

Level Five:  Bunny, Hounds, Chevin, Widdop, Arncliffe

The course is as follows:

1.     Bunny Run (1st, 7th, 15th, 22nd April). A good turn out for all these races.

2.     WED MAY 7th HARE & HOUNDS FELL RACE. BS. 7.30 pm 4.5 miles/600’ from the Hare & Hounds, Lothersdale near Skipton. £3 on night.  Again a strong turn out from both men and women who ran this race.

3.        WED JUNE 4th CHEVIN FELL RACE. AS. 7.30 pm. 3.5 miles/900’ from Otley Town Centre. Results: Richard, Tony and Simon.

4.        WED JULY 23rd WIDDOP FELL RACE. BM. 7.15 pm. 7miles/1200’.  Historic first complete men's and women's teams at the same B Medium fell race. Results: 26, Richard 1.03.26, Chris Smith 31 1.04.53, 64, Dave Lewis 1.17.26, Amnuay Scott 66 1.18.23, 73, Kay 1.36, and 74, Jo 1.36.

5.     SAT AUG 9th ARNCLIFFE GALA FELL RACES. AS. 3pm. 1.8 miles/443’ from Arncliffe Village Green, near Skipton. £2.50 on day.  Also Gala road race (see list above).

Note: A list of local fell races in 2003 is available at the club or on the website.

A Summer Saturday Outing –                          Arncliffe Gala, Saturday  August 9th

This comes highly recommended after Kay and John visited last year.  Kay won a prize in the 4 mile road race, and the AS 1.8m/443ft fell race will secure level 5 for those on Chris’s recommended fell race course.  This is a traditional Dales gala, with the road race at 1.30. and the fell race at 3pm.  Many runners do both. Both are counters for the attendance scheme.

New club record

Donna Edmondson set a new female club record at the Otley 10 miles race in a time of 1.13, finishing 9th female.

Congratulations!

Congratulations to Alison and Paul Garlick on the birth of their first baby, Thomas James.

Pregnant Pause!

The last few months have been a somewhat strange experience for me in terms of my running career. As an experienced runner of some 14 years plus, I knew that providing I took it easy and didn’t run the same distances and levels of intensity that I’d be able to keep running for as long as possible throughout my pregnancy.

I now still come to training nights but tend to run a short 3-5 mile around Idle village and I still try to run any races that I feel fit enough to do, only much slower. My racing has now taken on a whole new perspective as I’m now generally at the back as opposed to mid field. However I can now enjoy the scenery far more than I ever did and can experience the support of fellow runners from other clubs. I particularly noticed this when I was lapped after 2 miles on the Bronte 5 race. All the top 15 or so runners gave me words of encouragement and support and so it made coming last more bearable. I was also delighted to be able to get a ppb at the Rainton 10k in a time of 61.01, only 10 or so minutes off my normal time. However, finishing the Blackpool half in 2.19 whilst 4 months pregnant will remain my ‘claim to fame’ and I felt so proud to see all my fellow club members cheering me and other runners home.

Chris and I had always intended that the baby would be a future runner and we were in the process of buying a top of the range 3 wheel  ‘racing’ buggy in order to take the baby on training runs and to races. However all our plans are now up in the air as we find that we are expecting twins!! . Instead we’ll now be looking for babysitters to assist at races in the future!! - Davina +2.

Idle Tide: Saturday 20th September 03.

As members are aware Idle AC hope to be one of the main attractions at Idle Tide on Saturday 20th September. As a club we hope to set a world marathon record at the Tide (central village fun day).  This will involve club members running in relay over a short distance of approx 21 metres on the Tide site (Thorpe School grounds) until we have run the marathon distance, hopefully in a time of sub 2 hours.  As some of you are aware training has already commenced for this intense and challenging experience during which we hope to break records i.e. world mile time, 10 k etc during the event.  As with last year’s event we hope to gain a lot of publicity for the club in addition to raising funds for a charity. In addition we will have a publicity stall at the Tide and hope to promote Idle AC and Hepworth & Idle Cricket Club.  We therefore need a commitment from all available members to make this a success.

Club ‘Away’ Runs during summer 03.

We still have two of the four 2003 away runs to do.  The details are as follows:

Thursday 31st July – run with Pudsey Pacers from the Pudsey Leisure centre at 7pm. This will be an off road ‘treasure’ hunt. Afterwards all are invited to join Pudsey for a drink in the bar where there will be a buffet, quiz and raffle. We will need to let Pudsey know the numbers for catering therefore if you are going please let Chris/Davina know by 21st July.

Sunday 17th August – Away run from ????? at 10am. Please all submit suggestions to any Committee members no later than Monday 14th July and we will hold a draw for the venue.

Yorkshireman off road marathon & half

Davina & Chris can both highly recommend this event, which takes place on Sunday 14th September at 10am (7.30am for walkers) from Oxenhope.  New for 2003 is the Yorkshireman Half marathon. If anyone is interested see Chris as a pre-race recce is recommended. Entries are available at the club or visit Keighley & Craven AC’s website at: www.keighleyandcravenac.co.uk. Entries close 6th September.

Idle Web

We are now whizzing past 8500 hits & again it's been a busy month on the web although the upward trend has levelled out a little with a similar amount of hits as last month.

The busiest days this month were quite understandably 2nd June - after the canal relay & the 23rd - the day after the Blackpool marathon & half marathon ordeals.  These events took around 8% of the total months hits each.

The hourly usage is becoming a good statistic as it used to peak around lunchtime & then another peak in the early to mid evening times.  This month there has been a constant usage from around 8am right up until 11pm.  This means that more people are visiting during working hours which hopefully means more exposure for the club.

The race results pages are still the most visited pages with Blackpool, the canal relay, club records, John Carr & Sheffield all getting a good look in.
The Idle gossip also has had a lot of internet interest this month taking around 10% of the hits

These statistics would not be complete without mentioning Donna Edmondson (I bet she's getting fed up of being so popular!!!).  Once again she has taken over 10% of the hits from search engines, followed closely at 9% for the Blackpool marathon.  The half marathon took a further 7% of the searches.  Rather surprisingly Sheffield marathon was next most popular search - but we had no-one representing us there this year !!!

Once again we've had interest from abroad but not quite as much as last month.

Idle Beer Festival.

WE THINK THAT all would agree that the first Idle Beer festival held at Hepworth & Idle cricket Club on the weekend of 27th – 29th June was a great success! We further strengthened our relationship with the Cricket Club by providing both customers and staff.

The Vets Bill: Bumper edition.

Since the last issue the race pace seems to be a little less frenetic, fewer races entered but quality has shown through with some PB’s, a Club record and a prize.

Back on the 19th of June at Becketts Park, that bastion of lady only races, saw five point five of our finest ladies compete in the annual 5k race. Leading the pack was the evergreen Mrs Kay Gambles (24.51) who lifted the 2nd place prize in her age category. Followed closely by Amnuay Scott (25.51) Sue Little (29.57), and new member Elaine Trevelyan running an impressive time for her first ever race. Finally running in the special 1.5 person category was Mrs Davina Smith (40.45). It should be noted here that in this category dipping at the finishing line isn’t encouraged.

Next on race agenda came the very well attended Blackpool ½ Marathon on 22nd of June. It was encouraging to see that the lure of this race was solely to do with the quality of the event and nothing at all to do with one or two days away at the seaside.

Heading our Vets was Dave Lewis (1:33:15) with a PB, Steve Little (1:38:03) Simon Bellwood (1:46:21) Trevor Hooley (1:49:00) Amnuay Scott (1:51:14) Martin Burnside (1:55:05) Kay Gambles (1:55:57) breaking the club F45 record, Davina Smith with 2.19.17, and Janet Burnside (2:24:25) with a PB.

The 4th Black Sheep series race at Rainton on the 29th of June didn’t live up to its name, as the weather was very hot and sunny. Competing were Steve Little (42.18) Amnuay Scott (50.11) Kay Gambles (52.30) and Davina Smith (61.01).

On the 5th of July in a small town called Masham somewhere in wilds of North Yorkshire fear and trepidation confronted the starters of the Burn Valley ½ Marathon. This Black Sheep series race starts innocently enough from the comfort of the Town Square but very soon takes on the profile of the Pepsi Max Big One ride at Blackpool. Overcoming insanity 4 Idle AC vets quaked on the start line, these were Steve Little (certifiable) 1:36:12, Simon Bellwood (never the same again) 1:46:18, Amnuay Scott (no smile at the finish) 1:55:44 and Kay Gambles (“that wasn’t too bad was it”) 2:00:51.

Finally Dave Lewis ran 40.27 on a testing Skipton 10k race on 6th July.

Nothing to report on the Yorkshire Vets Grand Prix this month. The next GP race is on Wednesday 6th August at Pudsey followed by one at Honley on the 28th September (a good race venue)

If I’ve missed anybody out please let me know, if you already have then it’s the temporary insanity of the Burn Valley still working through - Steve Little

New Members

This month as our 47th member we welcome Elaine Trevelyan (Adrian’s wife). Elaine has been a regular member of the Wednesday night group who has really improved over the past few weeks. Elaine ran an impressive first race at the Beckett Park 5k on 19th June and is now in training for the Bingley Relief road 10k.

From the Coach…

IT WAS WITH some pleasure that I noted that once again an article with a ‘holiday’ feel is appropriate.  This is a great excuse to wander off the point, give nuggets of daft information, drone on about running in beautiful places, and generally remember all that is most wonderful about our sport.  Last year I waxed lyrical about the Cornish Coastal Path, which is like fell running by the sea.  This year, with a highly active fell contingent within the club, I need look no further than the classic Northern fell races for inspiration in my article.

I suggested to Steve that when in the Lakes he could do the “Flan Fell Race” at Ulverston, simply because of the name.  Ulverston is the home of Hoad Hill, atop which sits the Barrow Monument, in the shape of a Lighthouse.  It’s a lovely run up and round this, starting from “The Gill” – an open square in the centre of the town, where the Cumbria Way also happens to begin.  The walk start is now marked by a fascinating sculpture in layers of the different types of stone found along the way, from the fossil filled limestone of the gently rolling South Lakeland hills, over Coniston slate and on to the rugged volcanic masses of the North.  Hoad Hill provides excellent views of Morecambe Bay and the southern Lakeland Fells. Pausing by the monument on my run I was quite jealous of the local club, the wonderfully named Hoad Hill Harriers.  They probably take it for granted though – I remember a Keswick Fell champion and guest house landlady who told me how fed up she was of the “same old run” down the shores of Derwentwater to Watendlath, the jaw droppingly beautiful setting for the Rogue Herries novels.

Anyway where was I? Oh yes, the Flan Fell Race.  Fascinated by the significance of the name, I found this quotation from Dan Birtwistle, Historian at Ulverston Heritage Centre:

“Pole Vaulting was invented during the mid-19th century in Ulverston, North Lancashire (now Cumbria) and the first world champions were born there.  Local shepherds and farm workers in the Furness fells found it easier to negotiate rough terrain by vaulting over streams and ditches using long ash poles.  A competition for agile young men became a fixture at the annual Flan Sports (inaugurated in 1836) but instead of vaulting over ditches a high bar was used.   Two great champions from Ulverston were Edwin Woodburn and Tom Ray, the latter setting a world record in 1877 of 11ft 6in.”

Well I know it doesn’t explain the name. Anyway Steve didn’t do the race.  He went to Keswick and climbed up Blencathra instead.  But that’s another story…

Whether it be on tarmac, trail or tussock, get out there and enjoy the summer – the nights are drawing in!

Chris.
