This month we welcome 4 new members: Our 54th member is James Waters
who is currently studying at Bradford University. James has joined as a second
claim member, his first claim club being Victoria Park Harriers and Tower
Hamlets AC. Our 55th, 56th and 57th members
all come from the successful Wednesday night group and it’s great to be able to
welcome them into the club. Katy Ostick and Mandy Keenan are sisters who were
both part of Idle AC’s world marathon record breaking relay team and Katy then
went on to run her first 10k at Horsforth. Heather also ran her first 10k at Horsforth.
Its great to have so many new women, especially as the cross country season
approaches.
The 2004 London Marathon will be held on Sunday 18th
April. The closing date for entries is 24th
October 2003 so if you are wanting to
take part then please get your entries sent in. Successful and unsuccessful
applicants will receive a reply in early December 03. Anyone who is unsuccessful in their entry
will be eligible for the draw for the club entry which normally takes place at
the Christmas Do. In addition members gain an automatic place under the ‘good
for your age’ system i.e. if you have run between 2.45 and 3.15 (men) or 3.15
and 3.45 (women) in 2002 or 2003.
Advance warning: The final two club points races
will be the Guy Fawkes 10 on 2nd Nov at 10.30 am from Ripley Castle.
(Give all completed entry forms to Martin) and the Leeds Abbey Dash on 30th
Nov at 9.30am. Get your entries in ASAP.
We now have entry forms for the Brass Monkey
Half marathon on Sunday 25th Jan 04 at 10am. Although this seems
along way off please get entries in immediately as the race is always
oversubscribed and the 2003 event was full by Nov 02!).
On Thursday 30th Oct Idle AC present their first Hoary Halloween Hash from Hepworth & Idle Cricket Club at 7pm. (See Aug edition of Idle Gossip for the low down on Hashing!) Afterwards do come to the Symposium for a drink.
We are all invited to the annual Bonfire held at Hepworth & Idle Cricket Club on Saturday 1st November. The Bonfire will be lit at 6pm and if anyone has any firewood such as old trees, furniture or burnable rubbish then please bring it to the cricket club.
Pudsey Pacers have again invited us to
join them in ‘treasure’ hunt’ on Thursday 27th
November, 7pm at Pudsey Leisure Centre. Afterwards all are invited to join
Pudsey for a drink in the bar where there will be a buffet, quiz and raffle. We
will need to let Pudsey know the numbers for catering therefore if you are
going please let Chris/Davina know by 23rd November.
This is the main league that we encourage
members of Idle AC to run. Last year, our first year in the League, was a huge success with
22-26 members at each race. Last year we were able to show that despite our
small size we are capable of achieving a great deal. Indeed we finished 4th
overall, which was a brilliant achievement for the whole club. In addition we
had many individual trophy winners.
This will be Idle AC’s second year in the WYWL
and its important that as a club we all try to commit to running in all 5
fixtures if at all possible as these are TEAM events. As with last year, the Committee all feel
that we can field a fairly strong team if the whole club runs.
To count for individual awards you must complete all five events, and your scores will be added together. At the end of each race each individual is given a tag which denotes their points scored in the race. This works as follows: The first male runner gets 200 points, second gets 199, third gets 198 and so on. The first female runner gets 100 points, second gets 99, third gets 98 and so on. So in addition to the team positions, individual results are available after each event and individual and category winners are presented with individual trophies at the Presentation Evening held at the end of the season (Mid March 04).
Two very special trophies are also presented to individuals each year - these are for the most improved male and female runner who has completed all 5 events. The most improved male runner receives the Dave Turpin Memorial Trophy and the most improved female runner receives the Paul Dowson Memorial Trophy. Through these trophies we remember two well known league competitors who both died suddenly during the 1999 -2000 season.
There are 8 clubs that form the WYWL:
Idle A.C, Pudsey Pacers, Skipton A.C., Leeds & Bradford Tri, Dewsbury Road
Runners, Baildon Runners, Stainland Lions and St.Bede’s. The fixtures for 2003/4 are confirmed as
follows:
1 23rd
Nov 03 hosted by Stainland Lions. 10.30 am
2 7th
Dec 03 hosted by Idle AC- Festive event with optional fancy dress and silly hat competition. 11 am.
3 11th
Jan 03 hosted by St.Bede’s, 11 am.
4
8th Feb 03
hosted by Pudsey Pacers, 11am.
5
22nd Feb 03
hosted by Skipton AC, 11am.
The
Team Scores:
Whilst
the League does offer individual trophy positions, its primary objective is
team competition. The five team scores
are added together to decide the following team trophies:
1st
Combined Team, 2nd Combined Team, 3rd Combined Team.
1st
Male Team.
1st
Female team.
1st
Vets Team (combination of male/females).
A
club team is the first seven men to cross the line(which must include 2 vets),
and the first three women (including 1 vet), in each event.
The
vets team is the 2 male and the one female counting vets added together.
Different
runners may score in different races - it’s just first past the post on the
day.
The
first Combined Team can enter the National Cross Country Final and the 2nd
Combined Team can enter the Plate Race at the National Final.
The
Cross Country Races:
Each
race in usually different in the terrain that it offers although all are
approx. 4 - 5 ½ miles in length and offer a mixture of woodland, canal, tracks,
streams, usually in fairly muddy conditions. There are usually between 100 -150
runners at each event. Cross Country studs are recommended and club vests
should be worn.
The
Presentation Night:
This
has become THE social event of the year for the participating clubs. In addition to presenting the Team and
Individual trophies the Presentation Night is a chance for all the clubs to get
together socially and enjoy a buffet and disco in a relaxed and friendly
atmosphere.
The League 1992 -2002
In 1992 the League celebrated 10 years in its
current form. During this 10 years the League has grown in strength and
recognition and is accepted as a league that caters for runners of ALL
abilities. Between 1992-2003 there have been 55 races, Chris Smith, the
Secretary of the League is the only runner to have competed in all 55 events
(Davina has run 54!).
As members may be aware December 02 saw the start of a yearly
tradition for Idle AC – the annual Sewage Works Surprise club handicap race. The race is open to all members and will be run as a 4
mile Handicap race from the Stansfield Arms Pub at Apperley Bridge, starting at 10am
on Sunday 21st December 03. There is a special annual trophy for the winner, which was won
last year by Dave Lewis.
THURSDAY 23RD OCTOBER, 7.15,
IDLE BAPTIST CHURCH (opposite Co-Op)
The Club has a three year development plan,
which has seen us through our first 18 months.
However we now need, as a club, to look to the future to ensure that we
develop in line with the requirements of the majority of our members. We have a copy of a Pro-forma of a suggested
Development Plan format from NoEAA, which we hope to be able to adapt to suit
our club’s profile. It has been suggested that we consider this format and
possibly use a mixture of the current format and the NoEAA suggested format to
create a plan, which would suit the current and future needs of Idle AC. We then hope to be in a position to have an
outline ‘guide’ of the plan, which will include, short, medium and long-term items for inclusion. This will
then be used a as ‘steer’/base document to put to the whole club at a
Development Plan meeting which has been arranged for Thursday 23rd
October 2003 at 7.15 pm at Idle Baptist church Hall (same venue as AGM –
opposite the Co-op. This meeting will
replace the regular training night. Please all try to attend.
The biggest event on the running calendar after London is the Great
North Run. This event was inspired by Brendan Foster in the early 80’s and has
grown since then to become a world class race today. On the 21st
September our crop of GNR’ers were Martin Burnside 1:56:42, Pete Helliwell
2:06:56 and Janet Burnside 2:28:11.
4th October saw the Mount Skip FR at Mythomroyd, here to
prove that up hill running can be fun was Tony Blythe in 52:09.
5th October was the Horsforth 10k, a mammoth number of
Idle AC vets attended as follows:
Dave Lewis 41:59
Trevor Hooley 45:54
PB
Simon Bellwood 46:06
Glen Pinkney 46:08
Amnuay Scott 48:25
PB
Kay Gambles 51:38
Martin Burnside
52:46
Elaine Trevelyan
62:11 PB
Davina Smith 68:12
12th October is not the time of year to be building
sandcastles but perhaps the 13.1 miles of the Bridlington ½ Marathon is a
better bet. First to the sunbeds was Dave Lewis in 1:36:26, Trevor Hooley was
close behind in 1:42:40 followed by Simon Bellwood in 1:43:57 and Kay Gambles
in 1:54:39.
19th October saw the Richmond Castle 10k, here Steve
Little covered the distance and stormed the keep in 41:38.
This month here is a small self test, please peruse the list below
and answer all the questions honestly.
You are a Vet runner if…
·
you love shoes…running shoes.
· you won’t drive by any running shop without a quick look inside.
·
you know exactly how far a kilometre is.
·
you have more old dirty running shoes by the
door than a farmer.
·
you’ve seen Chariots of Fire at least 5 times.
·
you read each month’s issue of Runners World
cover to cover within 24 hours.
·
you get excited when you hear that there is a
new Gatorade flavour.
· you not only know how you did in a race but you know exactly how every other runner finished.
