We will be drawing the club’s two entries for the London marathon at the

This month we welcome 2 new members: Our 58th member is Stephen
Edwards. Stephen lives in Idle and was pleased to find a local club to further
his running. He was not put off even
though he came on the night when we locked Joe in the toilets, and went to the
wrong cricket club where they told him we train on Wednesdays. Number 59 is Gary,
who joined us first on the ‘Hoary Halloween Hash’. Despite seeing Mary’s
Grotto, he still came back for more!
On a clear chilly evening there gathered a
gaggle of unusually dressed athletes, for the Idle version of a ‘Hoary
Halloween Hash’. After a briefing from the ‘Hares’ and a quick look at some of
the typical flour markings the ‘Hounds’ would be expected to follow, sixteen
assorted ‘Dracula’s’, ‘skelingtons’, ‘ghouls’ and just plain ‘hounds’, trotted
off along Westfield lane heading for the wild darkness of Idle moors.
Michael ‘Count 3’ Masleczko was soon on the
trail and encouraging those behind with appropriate calls to follow. A clear
set of FRB’s was quickly established and under strict Hash rules would have
been dealt with in the usual way at the après Hash ‘Down-Downs’. A warning for
those intending to attend a real Hash – take your hollow legs but not your car!
Appropriate punishment was meted out to another
Hash transgressor – ‘Posh David’ was encouraged by one of the Hares to
investigate far more false trails and routes than was polite. His only crime
was to arrive late due to missing a train connection – but once again, fair
game to the Hash ‘Religious Advisor!’
The trail continued to Wrose Road and beyond to
the head of Carr Lane for a rendezvous at the ‘HASH VIEW’ (HV). The whole of
Shipley, Frizinghall, Manningham, Baildon and beyond, was laid out in all its
street-lit splendour for those who took the time to stand and stare. As the
pack then proceeded down Carr Lane towards Shipley, there followed many an
appreciative noise from those who had been subjected to a Wednesday night
session that had involved negotiating Carr lane against gravity the previous
evening.
Many Idle Athletes had made the special Hash
effort and dressed in appropriate ghoulish attire – including Pete-rified
Vickers, Tony T - Bone(s)! and Trev Hoo!! - ley as scared out of their skin
skeletons, and of course we could Count on Michael and on and on…… Joe flew like a bat while others Bat - tled
up the snicket. Amnuay was obviously familiar with the Hash (had she
just returned from Amsterdam too?!)
The Hash was joined for one night only, by other
special guests Gary ‘New man’ and ‘Frilly’ Phil Ralph who were introduced by Jo
and Tony respectively. Not sure what these two made of the evening but since
they are more used to martial arts and the gym, a repeat visit may require
further encouragement?
After a prolonged period of checking outside the
Carnegie Library, the trail was discovered heading into the darkness of
Windhill Old Road towards the wilds of Buck Woods – would the Hares be so
devious as to insert a check–back involving this haunted wood? Not tonight
Egor, as the pack correctly avoided this detour and all other encouragement to
explore the murk of Ainsbury Avenue, by heading off to Thackley Corner. Only a
brief stop was required here, in order to administer counselling to a couple of
traumatised young pedestrians claiming that nightmares were guaranteed to
follow the prolonged exposure they’d suffered during the passing of so many
Hoary Hashers in costume (and some without!).
More excellent route finding by the FRB’s
ensured the whole assortment of lost souls made it to the ‘BEER STOP’ (BS) at
‘Scary Mary’s’. AND what a BEER STOP it was! The pack was traumatised within
seconds of arrival as they were bombarded aurally, orally and visually by the
ghoulish splendour only a devious mind with too much spare time can create. Mary
was ably assisted by Janet (the un-frilly wife of ‘Frilly’ Phil) and the pair
had created a venue and atmosphere that was guaranteed to deter all but the
most demented of trick or treaters. There were bats, goblins, manikins, skulls
and spiders galore. This was all complemented by the spirit laden spooky punch
that refreshed and relaxed the pack during their all too brief stay at the
cavern of lost souls.
The trail was then discovered along a sneaky
snicket, heading uphill towards a ghoulish ginnel alongside Idle Parish Church,
where the deafening bells tolled for those who lingered longer than necessary
in the shog dite ridden darkness.
Against lazy logic, there then followed a period
when several FRB’s including Chris-“it can’t go straight back to the
club”-Smith, Matt-“lets look along Highfield Road”-Coles and Joe ‘Small Space’
Marjoram, were determined to pursue a non-existent trail in the general
direction of Five Lane Ends. They were NOT followed by any of the remaining
Hounds, who had sensibly decided by then that the club house was half a mile
away and there had been talk of drinks at the Symposium shortly after that, so
lets head in that direction.
The whole pack was re-united later at the
Symposium after some had changed their costumes and others who said they had
but looked the same! The bar staff was briefly overwhelmed by the influx of
non-eating, bag-dumping sweat merchants who descended upon the bar and other
areas, before inviting us to get comfy in the areas normally reserved for those
spending far more money than the Hashers. A fabulous three hour social followed
during which this scribe imbibed sufficient Erdinger Weissbeir to interfere
with the biological gyroscope and vocal programming!
Fang -nks to all who took part as it wouldn't have been a total HASH
without you.
On! On! On!
Your Hash Scribes;
Joel Chreb and Drastic Harkriric
This year the club had 15 named club races,
which earned members attendance points. We are now looking at a list of races
for 2004 and members are invited to put forward their nominations as to which
these should be. To date (Jan to mid November we have had runners at over 70
races and therefore its been suggested that we nominate more club races in
2004.
The 2003 club races were as follows:
Liversedge Half Marathon, Coniston 14, Wakefield 10k, Baildon Boundary Way Half, Meanwood Valley Trail 8, Guiseley Gallop 10k, Bunny Run1, 3mile ‘Fell’ race, Leeds Half or Full Marathon, John Carr 5k, Blackpool Half or Full Marathon, Arncliffe Gala 4 mile Road and/or Fell race, Burnsall Classic 10 mile, Horsforth 10k, Guy Fawkes 10mile, Abbey Dash 10k.
Do members think that we should stick to this list with more races added or are there other races that should be done instead of the above??.
Please all have a think about it and let us know so that we can print a final list of 15-20 races to be included in January 2004’s Gossip.
The only definite races to be included are:
The Brass Monkey Half marathon on Sunday 25th
Jan 04, and the Blackpool Full/Half marathon on 20th June 2004.
Pudsey Pacers have again invited us to
join them in ‘treasure’ hunt’ on Thursday 27th
November, 7pm at Pudsey Leisure Centre. You will need a torch.
Afterwards all are invited to join Pudsey for a drink in the bar where there
will be a buffet, quiz and raffle. We will need to let Pudsey know the numbers
for catering therefore if you are going please let Chris/Davina know by 23rd
November.
This is the main league that we encourage
members of Idle AC to run. Last year, our first year in the League, was a huge success with
22-26 members at each race. The first event this season was a stunning
performance, with a good turnout of 23, and some fine individual efforts,
contributing to strong team scores.
This will be Idle AC’s second year in the WYWL
and its important that as a club we all try to commit to running in all 5
fixtures if at all possible as these are TEAM events. The fixtures for 2003/4 are confirmed as
follows:
1 23rd
Nov 03 hosted by Stainland Lions. 10.30 am
2 7th
Dec 03 hosted by Idle AC- Festive event with optional
fancy dress and silly hat competition. 11
am.
3 11th
Jan 03 hosted by St.Bede’s, 11 am.
4
8th Feb 03
hosted by Pudsey Pacers, 11am.
5
22nd Feb 03
hosted by Skipton AC, 11am.
Sunday 7th December sees us hosting our first ever cross country event. This will be a two lap course of approx 4.5 miles over a fairly testing course. Hepworth & Idle Cricket Club are supporting us by putting on the food and manning the bar. Please all join in the festive feel by wearing fancy dress and/or silly hats, please also let Chris know if you can provide any marshals/helpers.
December 02 saw the start of a yearly tradition for Idle AC – the
annual Sewage Works Surprise 4 mile club handicap race.
The race is open to all members and will be run from the Stansfield Arms
Pub at Apperley Bridge, starting at 10am on Sunday 21st December 03.
There is a special annual trophy for the winner, which was won last year by Dave Lewis. This trophy will be presented at the
Symposium at 2pm when a hot buffet (as last year) will be available for £4 per
adult and £2 per child. Please write your name on the list at the club if you
intend to run so we can work out the handicap times and so that we can order
the food.
Thanks to all who attended the Development
meeting on 23rd October. The
aim was to look to the future to ensure that we develop in line with the
requirements of the majority of our members.
The Committee have completed the first part of the plan, and will
continue to work on it in coming meetings.
Many thanks for all the cards and presents we
received in celebration of Joe and Katie’s birth on 20th October
2003. Both Joe and Katie continue to make good progress and both now weigh over
5lb each. We finally welcomed them home on Friday 21st
November. We are sorry due to the strict
visiting limits at the SBCU that friends haven’t been able to meet Joe and
Katie as yet. We are therefore holding an informal ‘open afternoon’ on Sunday
30th November from 2pm onwards and all friends are invited to drop
in to our house - that’s 16 Leyton
Drive, off the top end of Ley Fleaks Road in Idle. - Davina & Chris.
“That was horrible!” said Kay from somewhere between her legs, having adopted her usual end-of-finish-funnel retching position. The first time I saw her do this at the end of a race I was genuinely worried, and looked around for St. John personnel. Now I am much more used to that red Idle AC hair scrunchie heading southwards, and know that she is just physically expressing relief at the end of the huge effort that has got her to the end of another finish funnel.
Only cross country races can really have such effects on runners. The quick starts, the difficult terrain, tightly packed runners and leg sapping undulations will challenge the best prepared of athletes. Usually also there is that other factor – the awful pressure of being in a team which is relying on you, which may lose a position because you failed to overtake that one person in the finishing sprint.
Many runners come into the sport because they are not team players. They may have been miserable on the football or hockey field at school, lacking the vision required for team invasion games. They may simply enjoy the freedom of running for themselves rather than being beholden to others. But team events add an extra dimension to our sport. Through them a collective effort can achieve far more than the satisfaction or achievement possible for an individual. Some runners dislike the possibility that they might let others down through their inadequate efforts, and avoid team competitions. They however will always miss out on huge motivating factors in their performance.
At our most civilised, human beings have a natural urge to help and support each other, and the capacity to work towards a common goal. So too some of our highest achievements come when working together, with every team member giving that extra vital push to perform well, so as to make their own positive contribution to a team effort. The runners coming through the finish funnel at Greetland, from our club and from others, were all very similar in behaviour – once recovered, they turned to look for team mates, willing them to success.
The runner who is not exposed then to the challenge of the winter cross country races, is missing out in so many ways. Firstly they are physically such a hard workout, which challenges the body in ways no road race can. Secondly there are many mental battles which must be fought and won, both in getting to the race and in completing it – the cross country runner becomes mentally stronger. Thirdly the prime motivator of team competition means that the runner is far more likely to push him or herself through boundaries beyond what individuals do – and achieve greater performance.
So once the Idle vest went on, Kay had to run and to hurt, we needed to see her run and hurt, and she needed to know that we had worked hard too. Her pleasure came from knowing that we had succeeded, though even if we had all tried our hardest and failed, we would still have known each other and respected each other better.
Chris.
