We should get the full list of local fell races for 2005 soon.
The first event at Dewsbury saw the biggest field that we’ve ever had for a WYWL event as 209 runners from the 8 clubs took part. This included 31 runners from Idle AC. The new one lap course of approx 4.5 miles proved to be the muddiest ever and a few people lost places due to searching for lost shoes in the mud. Despite that we showed other clubs that we had great strength in depth.
Ian Fisher won the race, supported by Steve Bottomley in 2nd place and Doug Briggs in 11th place. The women’s team were equally impressive with Donna Edmondson in fourth place and the ever improving Lisa Flesher in 7th place. Jo Belcher finished in 20th Position despite having run the New York marathon the previous Sunday. Idle currently lie in 1st place, twenty eight points ahead of LBT.
Newcomers to the club showed great promise too, with Richard Lyons, Gary, Simon Blackburn and Wilma all having creditable runs. The results are as follows:

3 16th Jan 05 hosted by St.Bede’s, 11 am.
4 30th Jan 05 hosted by Pudsey Pacers, 11am.
5 27th Feb 05 hosted by Skipton AC, 11.30am. (note change of start time)
Sunday 5th December sees us hosting our home event. As last year this will be a testing two lap trail course of approx 4.5 miles over a fairly testing course. Hepworth & Idle Cricket Club are supporting us by putting on the food and manning the bar. Please join in the festive mood by wearing fancy dress and/or silly hats! Please also let Chris know if you can provide any marshals/helpers.
Whilst the League does offer individual trophy positions, its primary objective is team competition. The five team scores are added together to decide the following team trophies:
1st Combined Team, 2nd Combined Team, 3rd Combined Team.
1st Male Team.
1st Female team.
1st Vets Team (combination of male/females).
A club team is the first seven men to cross the line (which must include 2 vets), and the first three women (including 1 vet), in each event.
The vets team is the 2 male and the one female counting vets added together.
Different runners may score in different races - it’s just first past the post on the day.
The first Combined Team can enter the National League Final and the 2nd Combined Team can enter the Plate Race at the National Final which will take place at Nottingham on 20th March 05. Further details will be circulated prior to each event.
We had 8 men and 2 women at the first fixture on 16th Oct hosted by Bradford Grammar School. We had 5 men and 1 woman (Lisa Flesher) for the second fixture hosted by Pudsey & Bramley on 30th October. There were 4 men and 3 women for the third race which took place on 20th November at Nell Bank, hosted by Ilkley Harriers.
Runners are advised NOT to run on the 4th December in the final event at Wakefield, as it’s the day before our home event in the WYWL. Anyone who is determined to do so should collect their number back from Chris.
See results above.
Last year we had runners in the all of the above races as the National was held locally at Temple Newsam in Leeds. However financially there was a cost to the club as we had to enter members’ details to strict deadlines and we entered more names than actually ran. Last year the National was run the day before our final WYWL event at Skipton and therefore many members chose not to run the national as we wanted to do well in the League.
This year the dates of the 3 championship races are as follows:
1. Yorkshire cross country championships: Saturday 15th Jan 05 at Aireville Park, Skipton (the day before a WYWL event). The distance for women is 6,000m at 1.30pm and the men run 11,000m at 2.10pm. The cost is £4 per person. Closing date 31st December 04.
2. North of England cross country championships: Saturday 29th January 05 at Consett, County Durham (the day before a WYWL event). The distance for women is 8k at 12.30pm and the men run 12km at 2.10pm. The cost is £3 per person. Closing date 11th December 04.
3. National Cross Country Championships: Saturday 19th February 05 at Cofton Park, Birmingham. Awaiting full details. However entry into this event is conditional on an entry to the North of England AA championships (as above). Senior teams cannot be entered if only individuals have been entered in to the regional championships.
Due to the deadlines we therefore need to know names (to Chris) of anyone wanting to run in any of these events no later than 6th December 05 along with their payment. However we would encourage members to make their first commitment to the West Yorkshire Winter League.
As members may be aware December 02 saw the start of a yearly tradition for Idle AC – the annual Sewage Works Surprise club handicap race! The race is open to all members and will be run as a 4 mile Handicap race from the Stansfield Arms Pub at Apperley Bridge, starting at 10am on Sunday 19th December 04. There is a special annual trophy for the winner, which was won last year by Michael Masleczko.
This trophy will be presented at the Symposium at 2.30 pm, then a hot buffet (as last year) will be available for £4.50 per adult and £2.25 per child. Please write your name on the list at the club if you intend to run so we can work out the handicap times and so that we can order the food.
This month we say our sad farewells to Matt Coles and Sandra Duarte as they leave Bradford to start a new life in London. However they leave with our best wishes and they know that they will always be welcome at Idle AC should they ever fancy a run when visiting Bradford to see family and friends.
This month we welcome 1 new member – Roy Bradshaw. Roy first heard about the club from reading ‘Running Fitness Magazine’ and whilst he is already a member of a gym he is keen to improve his running and to compete for the club.
Come and celebrate on Friday 10th December as Idle AC celebrates its third Christmas party. As we’ve now outgrown the Symposium we have booked a room at Idle Working Men’s Club. This year it will be a buffet, disco and another bumper raffle – please give any suitable (or unsuitable!) raffle prizes to Kay ASAP. The fun starts at 8 pm and all members, family and friends are welcome – it’s a big place and we need to fill it! The price is £7.50 per person, payable on the night (or to Kay in advance). Please write your name on the list at the club if you are joining the festivities.
Ian has been selected to run for Great Britain in an overseas marathon early next year. Below is an email from Ian which updates his GB story….
Went to London last Thursday afternoon for a meeting with my sponsors Standard Chartered at their Bank HQ near the bank of England. It was just for a couple of hours between 6 and 8.30pm.They paid for the rail tickets.
We hit it off right away, cause they provided a rather nice curry for us to enjoy. I told them I was on diet training only a few nights earlier in central Bradford. While my team mate Darren Bilton gave them advice on stretching. I was telling them about the time I had three large chucks of Gateaux in a variety of flavours dolloped with double cream on one Christmas party.... It had nothing to do with marathons, but it helped with the conversation.
Some of the bankers who are doing these marathons were there for advice on preparation. They are quite enthusiastic which was good. I've offered to give the on going training advice etc through e-mail. This I think impressed them as I think I'm going to get some extra days free over there. If we are successful in the team positions. I could be asked to do Hong Kong Marathon on 27th Feb.
Professional athletes were turned down for this as they wanted appearance money. Most had greedy agents aswell. Darren Bilton (Leeds City) who's doing Hong Kong and myself told them we were doing it for the love of it..........and also having kit with GREAT BRITAIN across the back. Now does that sound Corinthian or what...Pah who cares it's mine.
Regards
Ian
A top Eastern European distance runner once said that he would never be beaten by a man who worked a 40 hour week. It wasn’t an arrogant comment by a privileged athlete, but a simple statement of fact. He knew that he was able to dedicate his life to pursuing the optimum in training and preparation. There was hardly an activity in his life which was not specifically designed to maximise his performance. He knew that he raced against amateurs, and recognised that it just wasn’t fair.
Our own training, preparation and achievement therefore are always strictly in context. We can only succeed within the restrictions of our own lives. I have for instance met several talented runners whose physically demanding jobs left them far too tired to train properly. I work now with runners of quite astonishing potential, whose family, work and career commitments will never allow them to achieve anything like what for them is theoretically possible. However as a club coach I do try to influence the priorities of club members so that they place greater emphasis on training and racing, so that they become more like athletes in the true sense – people who make progress through training and celebrate this achievement through competition. This has made me deeply unpopular with many runners’ wives, husbands, partners and friends!
Unfortunately the progress and achievement we seek only comes through hard work – through the regular expenditure of time and effort in working towards a chosen goal. For the runner with a busy life, a degree of planning is essential to ensure that the right kind and the right quality of training is done at the right time. Here it is important to regard some races as part of a training schedule – indeed they can be vital, as there is no harder speed session than a race. If a race comes up which I want to do, or which I think will provide a good workout, but which is not a specific target race, I simply train through it. For instance last weekend after a hard week at work, I did the Friday speed session, ran in the Yorkshire League on Saturday, and did a long steady run on Sunday. I did not taper before the race or rest afterwards. I simply took the all important rest day later in the week. My performance in the race wasn’t good, but essentially I wasn’t racing, I was training – building up strength and stamina for future objectives.
Fortunately for the committed distance runner, regardless of ability, training and racing are just an enjoyable challenge – the group we had out recently at the Rivock Edge Fell Race said simply that they had enjoyed it. We had run though the countryside around Silsden on a fine autumn morning, and felt better afterwards. Unlike that Eastern European athlete, we have not generally felt the pain and misery of training to be the best in the world. Yet we have placed distance running into the context of our lives. We have become athletes in the sense that we train, progress and compete. We achieve personal successes, and some even achieve small victories.
And we will never really be beaten by that top athlete because what is available in our sport is available to everyone – health, happiness……and pleasure!
-Chris.
