The remaining fixtures for 2004/5 are as follows:

3              16th Jan 05 hosted by St.Bede’s, 11 am.

4                     30th Jan 05 hosted by Pudsey Pacers, 11am.

5                     27th Feb 05 hosted by Skipton AC, 11.30am. (note change of start time)

Sunday 16th January sees the 3rd event at Esholt, another local event so we again hope to have a huge club turn out..

Whilst the League does offer individual trophy positions, its primary objective is team competition.  The five team scores are added together to decide the following team trophies:

1st Combined Team, 2nd Combined Team, 3rd Combined Team.

1st Male Team.

1st Female team.

1st Vets Team (combination of male/females).

A club team is the first seven men to cross the line (which must include 2 vets), and the first three women (including 1 vet), in each event.

The vets team is the 2 male and the one female counting vets added together.

Different runners may score in different races - it’s just first past the post on the day.

The first Combined Team can enter the National League Final and the 2nd Combined Team can enter the Plate Race at the National Final which will take place at Nottingham on 20th March 05.  Further details will be circulated prior to each event.

3rd Annual Sewage Works Surprise Club Handicap Race: Sunday 19th December at 10am.

December 02 saw the start of a yearly tradition for Idle AC – the annual Sewage Works Surprise club handicap race! The race is open to all members and will be run as a 4 mile Handicap race from the Stansfield Arms Pub at Apperley Bridge, starting at 10am on Sunday 19th  December 04. Runners are welcome to run in fancy dress!! (again). There is a special annual trophy for the winner, which was won last year by Michael Masleczko.  This trophy will be presented at the Symposium at 2.30 pm, then a hot buffet (as last year) will be available for £4.50 per adult and £2.25 per child. Please write your name on the list at the club if you intend to run so we can work out the handicap times and so that we can order the food.  Chris promises more accurate course measurement this year (rather than just guessing!) so people shouldn’t be too stitched up on times.  But in a handicap race there’s only ever one person who feels the handicapper got it right…

Review of a year at Idle AC – 2004.

The F35 women picked up a prize in the British Masters Athletic Federation (BMAF) Half Marathon Championships, held in conjunction with the Blackpool Half Marathon. In the F35 category Idle AC finished in 2nd place with Lisa Flesher, Archie Devesher and Janet Burnside each being awarded team medals.

The full marathon saw debuts from Vicki and a (British) debut from Amnuay whilst Jo set a new female marathon club record and achieved her London automatic entry time. We finished 1st women’s team in the Triangular relay at Esholt (Kay, Lisa F, Amnuay and Laura).

July- The women’s Half marathon team of Jo, Kay and Davina secured a 1st women’s team place at the Burn Valley half, despite competition from many other clubs. This was our first women’s team prize in an open race. Kay also picked up a prize for being the top F45 runner. For the first time we had both men and women in a Yorkshire Vets Relay team. We welcomed a new member to the Idle AC ‘Baby club’ as we congratulated Alison and Dominic on the birth of baby Rory.

Davina was 1st F35 in the York’s Vets Championships and Lisa Hall ran her first 15 mile race in 2.11.  Idle AC were 1st women’s team in the Yorkshire Championships: Donna, Davina and Jo.

November- The start of the 2004/5 WYWL cross country season at Dewsbury. Ian Fisher won the race, supported by Steve Bottomley in 2nd place and Doug Briggs in 11th place.  The women’s team were equally impressive with Donna Edmondson in fourth place and the ever improving Lisa Flesher in 7th place. Jo Belcher finished in 20th Position despite having run the New York marathon the previous Sunday.  Idle won the first event, twenty eight points ahead of LBT. There were 12 Idle AC runners at the Guy Fawkes 10, which included Lisa Flesher who picked up a prize for being 3rd F35. Idle AC were also 2nd female team with Donna, Lisa and Davina. Joe Marjoram set a new club record at the Roundhay 5. The month ended with 15 runners at the Abbey Dash, including Doug Briggs who set a new club record. On the same day the club had 8 runners at the Rivock Edge fell race.

December- The second WYWL fixture saw us successfully hosting our home event with a 29 Idle AC runners. Ian won the race but he had strong back up from Steve Bottomley and Doug Briggs. For the women Donna finished second and Lisa Flesher finished in 5th position despite carrying a hip injury. They were supported by

an 8 women team, which included newcomer, Clare Sweeney.  Steve Little and Martin Burnside qualified as Level II coaches.

Overall 2004 was a really successful year which saw our membership continue to increase and training nights regularly seeing 20 members at a time. We showed that we can provide strong team and individual performances in road, cross country and in fell and trail races alike.

We now look forward to 2005 when we hope to build on our success in the WYWL and when we’ll aim to continue to succeed at all distances and in all disciplines.

Christmas at Idle AC

December is a busy month for us all, with the second cross country fixture on the 5th, the Christmas Do on the 10th, and the Sewage works Surprise Race on the 19th.  With Christmas and New Year’s Day both being on a Saturday the training nights of Tuesday, Wednesday, Thursday and Friday will not be affected. We will have our usual ‘Christmas Lights’ run on Thursday 21st Dec (20th for the Wednesday group) when we hope to find a selection of decorated houses which show festive spirit. Afterwards there will be mince pies. Hopefully we should have a good turn out for the Chevin Chase 7 mile race on Boxing Day 11am. For those wanting a run on New Years Eve you could run the Auld Lang Syne Fell race!! This is a ‘B’ Medium fell race which starts from Penistone Hill Country Park at Haworth at 11.30 am. The race is 6 miles with 900’ of climbing (speak to Chris if you want to know more details about the course) it’s only £3 to enter (on the day only) and all finishers receive a bottle of Briscoe’s Brewery ‘Auld Lang Syne’ beer. All prizes are beers, ales, ciders etc.

Once again we have seen the club grow in strength and in achievements. However 2005 will be even better! Thanks to all the members we really have achieved a great deal during 2004.

Merry Christmas and a happy new year.

Marathon newsletter

Those of you with access to the internet might be interested in looking at the Runners World website: www.runnersworld.co.uk as it now contains a weekly marathon newsletter which can be emailed to your email address on a weekly basis. It is aimed at both beginners and experienced marathon runners and will contain training schedules which start on 3rd Jan and run through to 17th April. Although the schedules are aimed at London it contains many alternative marathons (Belfast perhaps???). Below is a taster of what the site offers:

Whether you're aiming for five hours or sub-three, following a schedule is reassuring - and effective. You'll know what to do every single day, and whatever your goal, our expert writers know the fine line between too much training and not enough.

But which target? Here's roughly what you'll need to be capable of:

The Vets Bill

Since the last edition our Vets have been very active with lots of races being completed, scoring lots of PB’s and scooping a few prizes.

September’s races were The Robin Hood Marathon and Half with Lisa Flesher arrow swift with a PB in 3:51:50 in the marathon and Martin Burnside 1:56:28 for the half.  The magnificent Sutton 7 for Kay Gambles in 54:56. Chris Smith in the Mileta 10 bagged a 69:07. At The Great North Run the line up were Janet and Martin Burnside, Dave Currie, Pete Helliwell, Sue and Steve Little, Elaine Trevelyan, Wilma Saville and Suzanne Bairstow. It deserves a special mention that some of the Wednesday night ladies realised their untapped potentials to record creditable times in amongst the other forty odd thousand people there. However I think I could still hear their chatter above every body else’s at the start.  You know who you are!

The Scarborough 10 produced more than a ice cream and sand in your toes for Kay Gambles by getting a PB and winning the first ladies prize in the V45 class, also ran was Steve Little with only sand in his toes and an ice cream. Feeling holy at the Kirkstall Abbey 10k was Trevor Hooley, Dave Lewis, Simon Bellwood and Richard Lyons. The last race of September was the Horsforth 10k with a massive turnout of Idle AC Vets.  Leading the posse was Simon Bellwood followed by Dave Lewis, Pete Helliwell, Richard Lyons with a PB, Kay Gambles, Davina Smith, Claire Sweeney with a PB, Amnuay Scott and Archie Devesher.

On to October now and the Harewood 10m where Pete Helliwell scored a PB along with Dexter Wright, Lisa Flesher, Laura Brook with Claire Sweeney recording another PB.  Round 1 of the Complete Runner XC at Northcliffe saw Chris Smith, Pete Helliwell and Warren Fletcher all muddying their boots. At the Bridlington Half Pete Helliwell, Richard Lyons and Michael Masleczko competed. However the sea air must be good for some people as Simon Bellwood along with Archie Devesher, Wilma Saville and Pauline Athwal all produced PB’s.

Round 2 of the Complete Runner at Bramley Falls fell to Chris Smith, Pete Helliwell and Dave Lewis.

The Holmfirth 15 must be a special race with Simon Bellwood getting another PB, Martin Burnside scoring his PB and Chris Smith was out shone by Davina Smith’s PB and a prize for the 1st ladies team.

November went with a bang at the popular Guy Fawkes 10 with more PB’s for our vets, off like a rocket went Simon Bellwood, Pete Helliwell, Dave Lewis and Davina Smith. The sparklers were Lisa Flesher, Martin Burnside and Claire Sweeney all with PB’s. At the Rivock Edge Fell Race on a high were Chris Smith who led the way followed by Phil Routh, Michael Masleczko, Lisa Flesher, Amnuay Scott and Kay Gambles. On a spiritual high the Abbey Dash 10k saw a whole host of angelic veteran runners beginning with Dave Lewis, Simon Bellwood, Davina Smith, Martin Burnside, Wilma Saville PB, Elaine Trevelyan PB, Suzanne Bairstow PB, Janet Burnside PB and Jane Lewis PB.  It is to be noted that in this race a PB should stand for “Praise be”.

Regular readers of the Saga Running Times may be interested in a new magazine called the Masters Athletic Monthly. This new mag has lots of running news, some articles and contents relating to veteran runners which may be of use in your training, keeping you fit and healthy. There’s information on diet, reviews, reader’s letters and results. One of the items I found staggering were the current road rankings over 10 miles. How many would be happy with a 10 mile time of 77:57. This was achieved by a man at the Pocklington 10 this year….he also won the first male over 75 too.

The price is £2.60 or there is a subscription offer of £6.00 for the first 6 issues.

I would like to wish everyone a Merry Christmas and thank you all for supporting the various races over the year, this shows that our vets are a force to be reckoned with, that age is no barrier and has a positive effect for runners.

As Mr Spock said “Live long and prosper”.

- Steve Little

From the Coach…

The afternoon after the Idle Cross Country race I was struggling with the men’s results in our “office” when something hit the doormat downstairs.  I went down and retrieved a padded envelope containing a CD.  The note attached said:

 “Some photos from this morning.

See you on Friday – Matt.”

He’d had time to copy the photos from his digital camera onto the CD and deliver them before setting off back to London.  Suddenly I had 56 colour pictures available on my computer of an event I’d run in only four hours earlier.

My first thought, of course, was of Gossip covers, and I did two designs there and then.  But then I realised what an important coaching resource had already begun to accumulate on my computer.  By the time 200 images arrived from Pete V on Tuesday, I was convinced.  I could readily make a comment on the running style of almost all of our members.

Video and still images are of course used routinely to assist coaches at the higher levels of sport, but the advent of routine digital photography means that we can all readily gain an insight into our own running style and gait.  A most cursory glance through Peter’s photos gave me some initial pointers about good and bad practice in action.  Near the start Ian is running in a relaxed style with shoulders down and back, and hands open.  Chris Booker appears tense, with clenched fists and high shoulders, losing energy in swinging his arms across the centre line of his body.  Later in the race his hands have opened and he looks more relaxed, though that swing round is still there.  Donna’s clenched hands appear to transmit tension up her arms until the steepest part of the descent, when she suddenly spreads her wings, fingers and all, in a classic fell runner’s balancing technique.  On the same descent, Lisa is leaning back and braking terribly, rather than pushing her centre of gravity forward to carry her quickly and safely down, whilst Alison employs skills from skiing, leaning to the right and pushing off with the left foot.

My intention is firstly to demonstrate that running technique can either enhance or impede performance, and secondly to promote the practice of good technique.  Most distance running clubs, Idle included, do not place sufficient emphasis on running drills, regarding them as essentially the preserve of track athletes.  Yet they are vital to us too since a few millimetres of excessive arm swing, for example, can multiply up into a huge wasted expenditure of energy over a distance race.

In my own sessions I will continue to include and develop drills which improve style.  To fellow coaches and athletes I recommend the application of the ‘KISS’ principle (keep it simple, stupid!)  with a couple of simple initial pointers which may be of immediate benefit:

1)       Are you running with hands relaxed?  Clenched fists transmit tension up the arms to the shoulders.  Tension kills pace.

2)       Bring the shoulders down and back

3)       Imagine a line down the centre of the body.  If your hands cross this centre line during their swing, energy is wasted.

So when we’re doing drills again, think about that last race photo.  Were you the epitome of grace and elegance, slipping through the air like a gazelle, or were you lolloping along like a half castrated donkey?  Is there something you can improve?  If you’re really feeling brave, ask for an analysis of the photographs I have of you!

-Chris.
