Please note that many races require that competitors carry waterproof clothing, map and compass for the competitors safety. Failure to comply with a race organiser's requirements will mean that you will be barred from taking part in the race. Competitors should arrive at races prepared to carry any or all of the following equipment: Windproof whole body cover, other body cover appropriate to the conditions, map and compass suitable for navigating the course, whistle, emergency food (long races). This equipment is mandatory at all Cat A Long and Medium races. If this is the first time you have considered fell racing select a race distance well under the distance you normally run on the road. Sunday 30th January saw the final event at Skipton, where we had 29 runners. The following press release appeared in the Telegraph & Argus on Thursday 3rd March 05: Rivals run ragged by super Idle Idle AC sealed victory in the final West Yorkshire Winter League fixture at Skipton on Sunday. A strong showing from the host club, Skipton AC, on a sunny and spring like morning in Aireville Park, failed to prevent the new Idle club from taking both the overall and the mens honours, with a fine team performance. Newcomers Richard Lyons (45), and Clare Sweeney (35), showed great promise, both scoring for the club for the first time, and showing a clean pair of heels to many more experienced cross country runners. In the individual league standings, Steve Bottomley was second man, Donna Edmondson 3rd woman, and Lisa Flesher first F35. Club Coach Chris Smith was delighted, saying, There was great team spirit, as we knew we could do it and despite the club being less than 3 years old, we showed the strength in depth needed to win the League. Idle AC now go on to compete in the National league final on 20th March in Nottingham. It was a great night, a few sore heads the next day, but well worth it! Its a huge achievement for us to obtain the overall title and the Mens trophy ahead of bigger more established clubs. One or two of us reflected on how a few of us had tried for 13 years at our previous club to get the overall title, yet Idle AC achieved it in less than 3 years from the clubs formation. As the presentation night wore on and the beer and wine flowed we showed that we were Simply the best - a song that we felt that the club could reclaim. The night was a fitting end to the first chapter in our clubs history. Whilst the cross country is a team event is also great that Idle AC collect individual trophies. West Yorkshire Winter League Canal Relay Saturday 14th May 05: Foulridge to Skipton Organising club: Skipton AC Date: May 11th 2005 organised by 2004 winners Skipton AC, starting at 5 pm Route: Foulridge to Skipton c. 15.5 miles in total over four legs Teams: 8 runners of any age and running together in pairs (second of pair must arrive at the changeover point before the next pair goes off). Teams to include: 2 ladies, one of whom should be a vet, and one of the men should be a vet. Each pair to give their names to the marshal at the start and end of their leg. Info: An exceptionally picturesque section of canal on which all start locations are easily accessible. The finish is in Skipton and changing/showers will be available at the rugby club. The Idle Trail Race Sunday 17th July 2005 Our long planned and discussed event is now definitely on! We have all the permissions we need including our race permit and we have a major sponsor (Crosstrax). We are working closely with Horsforth Harriers, as they are running a trail event on Thursday 9th June, The Apperley Bridge Canter, and the two races will form a series with overall prizes. We have now formed committee to oversee the main race organization, although we will be calling on many more club members to assist with jobs on that weekend and in particular on the day so please all try to be available (with family and friends) to help. New Members This month we welcome 1 new member: Sam Young. Sam has recently joined the Wednesday group. She gave birth to a baby girl (Elizabeth) last November and is keen to get back to running as she comes from a running background. Sam is a veteran who is keen to compete in the future. Idle AC celebrates - We are 3 on 22nd March 05. When Idle AC was formed in 2002 we had no base (we met in a bus shelter in Morrisons car park), we were unaffiliated, we had no money and no kit. What an amazing transformation just three years on! We always, with the support of our members, had a belief in what Idle AC could aspire to be. The huge achievements in road, cross country and fell running and the growth in membership have shown how a club can succeed and this year we will host our first ever open race when we stage the Idle Trail race on 17th July. PS look out for the trumpets and fireworks on the website!! Black Sheep Brewery Race Series 2005. The Black Sheep Brewery Race Series is 6 separate running events organised by towns and villages in scenic North Yorkshire. The objective is to complete 4 out of 6 races, 3 x 10k's plus either the 10 mile or 1/2 marathon. Runners who complete 4 out of 6 races will be awarded a Silver Plaque, runners who complete all 6 races will be awarded a Gold Plaque. Age category winners will be determined by points gained in each race, and are based on your 3 best 10k's plus your best long race. Points will be awarded to the first 10 in each age category. Prizes and plaques will be awarded to the first three Male/Female runners overall, plus the first 3 in the following age groups:- MO/40, MO/45, MO/50, MO/55, MO/60, MO/65, - FO/35, FO/40, FO/45, FO/50, FO/55, FO/60, FO/65. Get your series entries in NOW! Annual General Meeting Thursday 7th April 05. Idle ACs third AGM will be held on Thursday 7th April at 7.15pm at the Cricket Club. This is your big chance to air your views on the clubs present and future policy and activities. Please note that there will be no club training on this date. An agenda will shortly be available to all members. Members are reminded that subs will be collected at the AGM when a membership form will need to be completed. It would be appreciated if all subs could be paid by the beginning of May as the North of England subscriptions are due to be paid in May 2005. Blackpool Marathon/Half: Weekend Away race 2005 For the third year running we hope to go mob handed to the Blackpool marathon and half marathon on Sunday 19th June 2005. Whilst it may seem a long way off, it would be good to know that we all had entries. This is as flat a course as you can get and is generally a well organised and supported race. As with last year we hope that many members will make a weekend of it - we have details of camping/ caravan sites and B & B accommodation (in Lytham/St Annes). This year we can offer special reduced entry fees at 16 for full marathon and 12 half marathon. The 2005 course has been improved with additional aid stations, bigger prize lists for both individuals and team competition. There are special team awards, men and women in both the marathon and half with three to score in both events on accumulative times. We will be sending a Group entry form and therefore will only require a cheque to cover your entry fee (made payable to Blackpool Marathon). Please give all cheques to Chris/Davina ASAP for us to enter as a group. From the Coach There can hardly be a better time for any runner. We might dream of living in warmer, less temperamental climates, and indeed the people there will have little concept of the darkness and misery of winter. Yet by the same token, what concept will they have of the joy of spring? For the distance runner, the long darkness is over. The clocks will go forwards on this final weekend of March, and suddenly the first part of our club training runs will be in daylight. The canal bank, the bridge across the river, and the moors beyond, beckon to the runner jaded by months of tarmac under streetlamps. Those of us affected by SAD (Seasonally Affected Disorder) will find the sun lifting higher into the sky, and penetrating the atmosphere more effectively. Similarly it will penetrate that darkness that can accumulate in the soul after a long winter, and simply make the mood lift. Each year I am determined to grasp every opportunity that longer evenings offer, though when the Autumn comes around again, I so often feel that I could have done better. I try at least to have a few midweek evening fell races to look back on. A group of us went to the Lothersdale Fell Race, near Skipton, two years ago, and I still have good memories of an enjoyable run over sloping farmland and fell, of good natured competition between clubmates, and a pint of beer drunk outside a village pub. Its there again in the fixture list on May 4th, and Id love to see mens and womens teams finish for me theres hardly a finer sight than Idle Vests coming off the fell on a still and peaceful evening. The picture is sharpened in my mind by the months of cold hands, of biting winds, and days that seem to end before they have begun. And even at my age I am often taken by surprise by the feeling of light and warmth coming back. I then remember suddenly, and I am thankful for the temperate British climate, which by making me experience the misery of winter, enables me to appreciate the start of spring. Our fellow runners in warmer climates will have felt little of this, and I believe are the lesser for it. The longest evenings are in June try a few evening races before then, on road, trail or fell, and feel as if you have taken hold of your spring and summer. There are the Bunny Runs, the John Carr 5ks, and Horsforths new trail race. That way, when the darkness of winter comes again, and all there is to offer is miserable drags along inhospitable pavements, you will know that nothing is permanent, and that as fed up as you are, the spring will come again, and you have the experience to deal with it.
