Each attendance at a “Club” designated race earns you 5 points (see below). 50% of the required points must be achieved by attendance at training sessions.

Please continue to make Davina/Chris/Martin aware if you have raced so we can record the results in the Gossip and on the website. If you have no official results please write the race details in the signing in book and we will try to obtain results.
We send
our birthday wishes to Richard Raistrick, Elaine Trevelyan and Chris Stubbs as
they all reach the Big 40.
I’m
sure, like us, everyone really enjoyed Elaine’s 40th birthday party
at Idle Working Men’s club to which she kindly invited the whole club (most of
whom turned up!). Elaine and Adrian want to thank everyone for turning up and
for making it such a great night. Elaine wanted to say a special thanks for the
lovely cards and pressies that she received and to let everyone know that she
really appreciated everyone being there.
Please
note that many races require that competitors carry waterproof clothing, map
and compass for the competitor’s safety. Failure to comply with a race
organiser's requirements will mean that you will be barred from taking part in
the race. Competitors should arrive at races prepared to carry any or all of
the following equipment: Windproof whole body cover, other body cover
appropriate to the conditions, map and compass suitable for navigating the
course, whistle, emergency food (long races). This equipment is mandatory at
all Cat A Long and Medium races.
If this
is the first time you have considered fell racing select a race distance well
under the distance you normally run on the road.
If you
retire during a race you MUST notify the officials at the finish.
If
you like the idea of fell running and would like to have a go please speak to
Chris.
All fell
races are given a grade indicating length and difficulty. Difficulty is
indicated by:
A, no less than 250 feet climb per
mile, not more than 20% on roads, at least 1 mile in length (NASTY);
B, not less than 125 feet climb
per mile, not more than 30% on roads (FAIRLY NASTY);
C, not less than 100 feet of climb
per mile, not more than 40% on roads and contain genuine fell terrain (NOT VERY
NASTY).
Length
is indicated by: L,
12 miles or more; M, 6 miles and over but less than 12 miles; S, under 6 miles.

We hope that club members (all those not running the final Blacksheep race at Burton Leonard) will support Pudsey and enter their 10k challenge, especially as they kindly ensured that their race date didn’t clash with ours. The course is scenic challenging mixed terrain offering something for everyone. All finishers get a T Shirt and there are team and spot prizes (last year we received males and female team prizes). In addition there is a 2 mile family fun run at 10am and a Park Fun Run (approx 400meteres) for the under 8’s at 9.30am. Entries are accepted on the day but to avoid disappointment (race limit of 400 runners) please get your entries in. Entry forms are available at the club or via Pudsey’s website: www.pudseypacers.com
The above 3 mile fun run event is also organised in association with Pudsey Pacers and is an official leukaemia research event. The fun run is open to all ages and the course offers a scenic, undulating route with musical marshals. AGOOD time is promised to be had by all. There are loads of prizes for first 3 males, females, under 16’s, oldest, youngest and best fancy dress. In addition there will be an auction after the presentation. All proceeds are to be given to Leukaemia Research in memory of Jack Good.
Entry forms are available at the club or via Pudsey’s website: www.pudseypacers.com
For those not doing the Burn Valley Half marathon please consider
supporting Michael, Edward and Co as they have helped to organise the Carr Lane
Challenge:
Carr Lane Challenge is a "trail" race of just under 5 miles.
Finish is the run up Carr Lane (hence the challenge) onto the Wrose Recreation
ground.
The race starts at 2.00pm on 2nd July from the recreation ground. Medals
to all finishers (and hopefully a goody bag). Prizes to 1st male, lady, vet
male, vet lady. Spot prizes will also be given. The race is run as part of
the Wrose Carnival, so hopefully there will be plenty of support.
Wrose carnival offers something for all the family. There will be the crowning of the
Carnival Queen, a small fun fair, stalls, i.e. tombola, coconut shy, guess the
name / weight, chip pan fire demonstration, Fire Brigade barbeque, food
stalls, majorettes, Pulse radio, five a side football competition, an
electronic dog from the Police (talks to children!!), home safety awareness
from the Police, a marching band and the event to be opened by Ian
Ormondroyd ("Sticks", for those of us old enough to have watched him
play for Bradford City).
Entry forms are available at the club.
There were 11
teams at the West Yorkshire Winter League event organised by Paul Norman at Skipton
AC. Heavy commitments to the Leeds
marathon and Ripon 10, and illness and injury, meant that at one point it didn’t
even look as if we would be among them.
In fact I’d given up by the Thursday before the event. But Steve Edwards leaned on me in the
Symposium that night to just make a few more calls. I sent a text to Lisa Hall from the bar. Almost immediately
she said yes, and we were on our way.
Somehow by
Saturday Morning we had a team, once I had untold all the people I had told it
was cancelled. Then disaster struck, as Lisa Flesher
rang to say she was
too ill to
run. I needed a woman to make the
team legal. Desperately I looked
at the member list, and remembered how well Clare had done at the John Carr
race. You can’t just ask a woman
with young children to run a race the same day. I rang her. She
said yes. Not only that but she came
round to pick up the details. This
girl was up for it! Then I
really pushed it. When I finished
the final leg at Skipton my car would be stuck in Gargrave, where Clare was
finishing. So I said, “Clare, how
do you feel about driving other people’s cars?”
“No problem,” she
said. “I’ll drive anything. I love
driving.” As Kay’s John might say, I could
have kissed her! So me, Clare and
Edward hared off, Clare answering my mobile phone while I drove, to reassure
Lisa Hall, also a relay debutante, who couldn’t find her relay partner, Dave
Dewhirst, at East Marton. We found
Dave and united them. They’d
actually been 200 yards apart for half an hour. With 17 minutes to spare they shot off to the start of their
leg. Within another 30 minutes
Clare, Edward and Peter completed the fourth leg, and as we changed over I put
my car key in Clare’s hand, setting off on the final leg with Simon Bellwood,
the Baildon team within sight behind us.
We pulled away to
finish in a comfortable fifth place, Ian and Stephen having given us a flying
start. Clare’s husband Shaun was
at Aireville Park with the children to see us finish, and pointed out my car,
which had been neatly reversed into a parking place next to the finish. My scratch team of first timers –
Dave D., Lisa Hall and Clare – had risen to the occasion and done a
fantastic job. Right at the last
moment, Clare had saved the day.
Chris.
In order to ensure that our first Idle trail Race is
successful we need to identify a number of race marshals (approx 28), finish
marshals, people to assist with car parking, drinks station people (during and
at the end of the race)and people to do a variety of other tasks. Please write
down the names on the list at the club, of anyone, including family and friends
that are available to help on the day. Please note that Idle AC members will
only be able to race if they provide the name of a least one helper.
The race committee are: Chris Smith, Davina Smith, Kay
Gambles, Martin Burnside, Steve Little, Peter Vickers, Michael Masleczko and
Adrian Trevelyan. See any of them if you have any questions.

Please
all support Horsforth Harriers as they stage the 1st Apperley Bridge
Canter on Thursday 9th June 05 at 7.30pm from Woodhouse Grove
School, Apperley Bridge. This multi terrain event of approx 10k distance is run
over tracks, paths, canal towpath with a bit of road and is similar to the
course of our own Idle Trail Race on 17th July. All runners get a
bottle of Woodhouse Wallop beer. The
above race will form the first of a two
race series with overall prizes, the second being our own event.
In the
past we have encouraged members to run the Bronte 5 mile race in celebration of
our ‘official’ birthday on 10th June 05 (3 years since affiliation
of Idle AC). Sadly the Apperley Bridge Canter clashes with the Haworth event
but hopefully we can have a drink in the bar at the sports centre afterwards to
celebrate our 3rd birthday, and indeed some people are going to
Haworth.
The Black Sheep Brewery Race Series is 6 separate running events
organised by towns and villages in scenic North Yorkshire. The objective is to
complete 4 out of 6 races, 3 x 10k's plus either the 10 mile or 1/2 marathon.
Runners who complete 4 out of 6 races will be awarded a Silver Plaque, runners
who complete all 6 races will be awarded a Gold Plaque.
Age category winners will be determined by points gained in each race, and are
based on your 3 best 10k's plus your best long race. Points will be awarded to
the first 10 in each age category.

This new course was really enjoyable. It was fairly hilly but was run on
quiet country roads and off road tracks. The course went through Studley Royal
park at the beginning of the race which was very scenic. It was well marshalled
and we all got a pair of socks at the end. A great start to the Black Sheep
series – Davina.
Annual subs for 2005 are now due and it would be appreciated if
all subs could be paid ASAP but definitely by 1st June as I have to pay a large cheque to NoEAA and to the
cricket club. Please complete a membership form and give/send £15 (£7.50
concessions) to me ASAP, cheque made payable to Idle AC.- Davina.
For the third year running we hope to go in
force to the Blackpool marathon and half marathon on Sunday 19th
June 2005.
This is as flat a
course as you can get and is generally a well organised and supported race. As
with last year we hope that many members will make a weekend of it - we have
details of camping/ caravan sites and B & B accommodation (in Lytham/St
Anne’s). Chris and I are staying at The Anchorage B & B - website: www.theanchoragestannes.com Tel: 01253 711584. It costs £25 per
person. All rooms are en suite. I have arranged for us to be
able to help ourselves to any of the following at breakfast time: cereal,
fruit, yogurt, bread, pastries, cheese, jams and juices. Tea, coffee and hot chocolate will be available
in the rooms.
I have sent the group entries off but we have
individual entry forms available at the club and members who haven’t applied by
the group entry should get their entries in ASAP.
The 2005 course has been improved with
additional aid stations, and bigger prize lists for both individuals and team
competition. There are special team awards, men and women in both the marathon
and half with three to score in both events on accumulative times.
Those who went the last couple of years will
remember the great meal we had on the Saturday night at Margherita, an Italian
restaurant, in St.Anne’s. We hope to go there again for the early bird menu
between 6 and 7pm (probably eating at 6.30pm). Although there is an extensive
menu we all opted for the two-course menu which at £7.95 for a starter and main
course was good value (2005 prices to be confirmed). Chris and I will be going
again and you are all welcome to join us. Please let me know who is interested
in this so we can book a table – Davina.
I’ve always thought of May as my month. It’s my birthday month, and although
Joe and Katie do not share my star sign (Gemini – the Twins) and are
Librans like my brother, they were christened two days after my mother’s
birthday on a beautiful mid-May morning.
It hardly seems a year since I was stitched up so gloriously in the
Symposium on my 40th birthday.
I recently re-read the article I wrote afterwards. It brought a smile to my face and a
tear to my eye.
But in running, May brings the longer nights, the weekday
runs, and the inevitable fixture congestion, all of which impacts on the club’s
training activities. We had 25
runners for example at the second Wednesday John Carr, which meant fewer
training on Tuesday and Thursday.
I myself took part in this event, whilst in charge of the babies. Joe, Katie and I broke our previous 5K
record, set at last year’s Burn Valley run, despite a half way pit stop for
front wheel wobble. We
overtook Wilma and Diana at the 4K marker, Katie shrieking with rage as Joe
tried to steal her rattle. We
picked up speed on the downhill last kilometre, and charged triumphantly into
the finish funnel. The funnel was
longer after the disaster the previous week when it filled up and the finish
line was blocked, but it wasn’t any wider. The double buggy got wedged between two posts, and the twins
complained loudly at their sudden emergency stop. We blocked the funnel.
Only the prompt assistance of several bystanders and competitors got us
clear before the finish line was completely fouled up. On the whole I don’t recommend
pushing baby buggies over long distances at speed. It creates an artificial forward running stance, and only
regular ibuprofen is keeping the back pain at bay.
From a training point of view, then, winter seems simpler
– more focused. The cross
country league is a primary objective.
But how as a club do we plan for the diverse requirements of members
over the summer months? I wasn’t
too optimistic, but arranged a coaching meeting, and the outcome was
surprisingly positive. As I had
hoped, we identified that there should be a periodised training year. That is, that different types of
training emphasis should be applied at different times of year, according to
the general direction of the club. The committee have tried to follow the wishes of the club
stated at the AGM, but if it doesn’t work for you then do say so – don’t
just vote with your feet and not come!
The periods
are broadly as follows:
|
January |
Endurance |
|
February |
Endurance |
|
March |
Endurance Mix (Some longer speed work) |
|
April |
Speed Work |
|
May |
Competition Period (short speed and drills) |
|
June |
Competition Period (miles then 800’s) |
|
July |
Hills/Resistance |
|
August |
Recovery Period (A time for something completely
different!) |
|
September |
Endurance |
|
October |
Endurance Mix (Some longer speed work) |
|
November |
Speed Work |
|
December |
Competition Period (Short hills, short speed, drills) |
The aim is to get a list out of actual sessions, and I am
working on it! Response also to
Thursday sessions has been good, these being more speed endurance in
nature. They are alternate
Thursdays, which means unfortunately that 9th June should be the
next one. That is the date of both
the Apperley Bridge Canter (recommended as it’s sister race to the Idle Trail
Race) and the Bronte 5 at Haworth.
Perhaps it’s not unfortunate as a race is one of the best forms of speed
endurance training! The next two
dates will be 23rd June and 7th July.
Idle AC is already regarded as somewhat ahead of the game
among similar types of club, in that we have weekly coached sessions. Technically now 75% of our sessions are
structured, and they are producing results. If the members want us to go all the way, then we will.
So which month do you regard as yours? Perhaps it is June, when so many will
once again make the journey to the west coast for the trot along the Golden
Mile. Perhaps October, or
April? For behind the thoughts on
training of any true distance runner, who will know the significance of these
months, deep in his or her subconscious, lurks the inescapable spectre of the
marathon.
