Fell Races: June to end August 05.

Please note that many races require that competitors carry waterproof clothing, map and compass for the competitor’s safety. Failure to comply with a race organiser's requirements will mean that you will be barred from taking part in the race. Competitors should arrive at races prepared to carry any or all of the following equipment: Windproof whole body cover, other body cover appropriate to the conditions, map and compass suitable for navigating the course, whistle, emergency food (long races). This equipment is mandatory at all Cat A Long and Medium races.

If this is the first time you have considered fell racing select a race distance well under the distance you normally run on the road.

If you retire during a race you MUST notify the officials at the finish.

If you like the idea of fell running and would like to have a go please speak to Chris.

All fell races are given a grade indicating length and difficulty. Difficulty is indicated by:

A, no less than 250 feet climb per mile, not more than 20% on roads, at least 1 mile in length (NASTY);

B, not less than 125 feet climb per mile, not more than 30% on roads (FAIRLY NASTY);

C, not less than 100 feet of climb per mile, not more than 40% on roads and contain genuine fell terrain (NOT VERY NASTY).

Length is indicated by: L, 12 miles or more; M, 6 miles and over but less than 12 miles; S, under 6 miles.

Pudsey 10k Challenge: Sunday 24th July at 10.45am

We hope that club members (all those not running the final Blacksheep race at Burton Leonard) will support Pudsey and enter their 10k challenge, especially as they kindly ensured that their race date didn’t clash with ours.  The course is scenic challenging mixed terrain offering something for everyone. All finishers get a T Shirt and there are team and spot prizes (last year we received males and female team prizes). In addition there is a 2 mile family fun run at 10am and a Park Fun Run (approx 400meteres) for the under 8’s at 9.30am. Entries are accepted on the day but to avoid disappointment (race limit of 400 runners) please get your entries in. Entry forms are available at the club or via Pudsey’s website: www.pudseypacers.com

Entry forms are available at the club or via Pudsey’s website: www.pudseypacers.com

Idle Beer Festival.

Please support the Hepworth & Idle cricket Club when they stage their third Idle Beer Festival on the weekend of Friday 24th – Sunday 26th June, particularly on the Friday evening.  This may prove to be something of a social for Idle AC.  Entry £1. Opening times: Fri 7-11pm, Sat 2-5pm and 7-11pm, Sun 2-5pm.

The Carr Lane Challenge- Saturday 2nd July 05

For those not doing the Burn Valley Half marathon please consider supporting Michael, Edward and Co as they have helped to organise the Carr Lane Challenge:

Carr Lane Challenge is a "trail" race of just under 5 miles. Finish is the run up Carr Lane (hence the challenge) onto the Wrose Recreation ground.

The race starts at 2.00pm on 2nd July from the recreation ground. Medals to all finishers (and hopefully a goody bag). Prizes to 1st male, lady, vet male, vet lady. Spot prizes will also be given. The race is run as part of the Wrose Carnival, so hopefully there will be plenty of support.

Wrose carnival offers something for all the family.  There will be the crowning of the Carnival Queen, a small fun fair, stalls, i.e. tombola, coconut shy, guess the name / weight, chip pan fire demonstration, Fire Brigade barbeque, food stalls, majorettes, Pulse radio, five a side football competition, an electronic dog from the Police (talks to children!!), home safety awareness from the Police, a marching band and the event to be opened by Ian Ormondroyd ("Sticks", for those of us old enough to have watched him play for Bradford City).

Entry forms are available at the club.

The Idle Trail Race – Sunday 17th July 2005

In order to ensure that our first Idle trail Race is successful we need to identify a number of race marshals (approx 28), finish marshals, people to assist with car parking, drinks station people (during and at the end of the race)and people to do a variety of other tasks. Please write down the names on the list at the club, of anyone, including family and friends that are available to help on the day. Please note that Idle AC members will only be able to race if they provide the name of a least one helper.

The race committee are: Chris Smith, Davina Smith, Kay Gambles, Martin Burnside, Steve Little, Peter Vickers, Michael Masleczko and Adrian Trevelyan. See any of them if you have any questions.

Website at www.crosstrax.co.uk.

Summer Away runs:

This summer we will have 2 ‘away’ runs, one on a Thursday evening and one on a Sunday morning.  The dates are as follows:

Sunday 10th July – Away run from Guide Inn, Harden Moor (venue of the famous Bunny Runs!) at 10am for Steve’s Magical Mystery Moors Tour.

Thursday 4th August – Away run from Shipley Glen (Car park behind old Glen House pub) at 7pm for Chris’s??? .

The 1st Apperley Bridge Canter

What a success this race turned out to be. Almost 250 runners lined up on the start line of this new race from Woodhouse Grove School, Apperley Bridge. This multi terrain event of approx 10k distance was run over tracks, paths, canal towpath with a bit of road and is similar to the course of our own Idle Trail Race on 17th July. Everyone seemed to enjoy the event and the facilities at Woodhouse Grove and it was great to see such a large number of Idle Ac vests.

Thanks to Alison, Pete V and Martin who all assisted with the results. Special thanks to Elaine, Abbie and Christopher who gave out Idle trail Race entry forms to every runner.

Congratulations to Ian who won the race for us and to the women’s team of Jo, Kay and Lisa H who were awarded as 1st women’s team.

After the race a few of us went into the Stansfield Arms for a triple celebration: The success of the race as it’s encouraging for our race, success for Ian and the Women, and to celebrate our (official) 3rd birthday as an affiliated club.

The Bronte 5 – 9th June 2005

In the past we encouraged members to run the Bronte 5 mile race in celebration of our ‘official’ birthday on 10th June 05 (3 years since affiliation of Idle AC) and although most people went to the Apperley Bridge Canter, 6 members supported the Haworth event. Three club records were broken in this tough 5 miler: Chris Stubbs, M40, Richard Lyons M45 & Trevor Hooley M50.  They too went in to pub (the Sun) to celebrate the club’s success. What a night for Idle AC!!

Bingley Show Trail Race: Sun 14th Aug 05.

Please read the attached message about race runners from the Black Sheep organiser:

Race Numbers: We have had to expel a runner from the Race Series for passing on his number to another runner, firstly this contravenes UK Athletic rules, but mainly it can make a complete mess of results and group winners, women passing on numbers to men and vice-versa cause no end of problems and delay results been announced, and getting someone else to run the race for you is against the spirit of competition. So be warned, if you are caught you are out.

New Members

This month we welcome 1 new member – Ana Lincoln. Ana has recently joined the ever growing ranks for the Wednesday Night group. She is a veteran who has been keeping fit via regular gym workouts but who now wants to be part of a running club. Ana says she might consider running a marathon one year, so she should fit in well at Idle given the number of women we have currently running marathons.

Subs are now (over)due. Please pay ASAP.

We have paid out cheques to NoEAA and to Hepworth & Idle Cricket Club and although most members have paid their 2005 subs and it would be great if those who haven’t yet paid (you know who you are!) could be paid their annual subs ASAP Please complete a membership form and give/send £15 (£7.50 concessions) to me ASAP, cheque made payable to Idle AC.- Davina.

Blackpool Marathon/Half: Weekend Away race 2005

For the third year running we hope to go in force to the Blackpool marathon and half marathon on Sunday 19th June 2005.

This is as flat a course as you can get and is generally a well organised and supported race. As with last year we hope that many members will make a weekend of it - we have details of camping/ caravan sites and B & B accommodation (in Lytham/St Anne’s). Chris and I are staying at The Anchorage B & B - website: www.theanchoragestannes.com  Tel: 01253 711584. It costs £25 per person. All rooms are en suite. I have arranged for us to be able to help ourselves to any of the following at breakfast time: cereal, fruit, yogurt, bread, pastries, cheese, jams and juices.  Tea, coffee and hot chocolate will be available in the rooms.

I have sent the group entries off but we have individual entry forms available at the club and members who haven’t applied by the group entry should get their entries in ASAP.

The 2005 course has been improved with additional aid stations, and bigger prize lists for both individuals and team competition. There are special team awards, men and women in both the marathon and half with three to score in both events on accumulative times.

Those who went the last couple of years will remember the great meal we had on the Saturday night at Margherita, an Italian restaurant, in St.Anne’s. I have booked a table to eat at 6.30pm. There is an extensive menu but unfortunately there is NO early bird menu but hopefully there should be things to suit all tastes and price ranges! I have some copies of menus if anyone wants one. The starters range in price from £2.70 -£5.95 and main course pasta/pizza’s dishes vary in price from £5.95 - £7.15. If you haven’t yet told me that you want to join us for the meal please let me know and I’ll increase the seating numbers. Please all meet at St. Anne’s Pier at 6pm– Davina.

The Vets Bill Seaside Special

Since the last Vets Bill our numbers are steadily rising, yes it comes to us all eventually, with a welcome into the Vets ranks of Richard Raistrick and Chris Stubbs.

In this years Black sheep Series after 3 races Kay Gambles is 3rd place in the ladies O/45 and Pete Helliwell is 3rd in the men’s O/40.

A reminder that the Yorkshire Vets GP is in full swing with plenty of local races still to do. If you would like me to get these races and other Y.V. notices to you more quickly let me have your e-mail address please.

In anticipation of the Blackpool Marathon and Half, this could be the headline in the T&A afterwards.

Tide turns for Idle Vets at Blackpool

Or

Idle runners tower in front at the Blackpool Marathon.

Or

There’s a famous seaside place called Blackpool that’s noted for fresh air and sun,

And Mr and Mrs Smith went there with their running club, to have some fun.

A grand little running club is Idle, its members dressed in there best; quite a swell,

With their finest isotonic drink bottles, the best that Woolworth’s could sell.

They didn’t think much to the ocean, the waves they was fiddlin’ and small,

There were no wrecks and nobody drowned fact nothing to laugh at all.

So seeking further amusement they decided to partake a half marathon or two,

They all toed the start line next morning feeling ill, having eaten much pasta too.

Off went the gun with a bang, making the runners all jump and disappear,

Excepting the man dressed as a Lion with a ‘orses ead andle in his ear.

Now after the race is all finished, Mr Smith will come over and check,

To see if his runners are all accounted and have a medal round their neck.

These trips to the seaside are right gradely and all seem very well planned,

But mostly they bring happy memories and your shoes all full of sand.

From the Coach…

I reflected a little as the Blackpool marathon approached on the others who would toe the line alongside me. We are fielding a potentially strong women’s marathon team, which is no mean feat for any club.  I was alarmed when I looked at the spread of ages. Ok Davina is only 2 years behind me, but when I ran my first marathon , Jo was still in school uniform and young Lisa was at primary school.  And yet I’ll be there again for a long plod, joined by Chris Stubbs who runs his first marathon as a V40, and Trevor, looking for records as a V50.

There are few sports in which so many different kinds of people of such varying ages can compete together. Yet it is vital to maximise our ability to endure, not only over the distance of a race, but over the distance of our lives. So how can this be done? How can we achieve the optimum from our bodies? How, indeed, can we make them last? I am already convinced that runners look better for longer  - much later in their lives than those who do nothing, or gave up sport after a brief flirtation.

So how can we stay in it for “the long haul” (as old Steve would say?). Sir Stanley Matthews, the footballing legend who played at the top level into his late forties simply advised plenty of hot baths.  The principle is simple  - heat promotes healing blood supply to aching or damaged muscles, and repair and recovery is promoted.

Remedies are all very well, but it is essential that we undertake regular preventative maintenance on our bodies, because we regularly ask a great deal of them.  We make them fitter and stronger by training, but the very overload principle by which we train means we are constantly at risk.  Therefore before training or racing we must warm up and then stretch.  But stretching cold muscles is worse than useless.  It is imperative to raise muscle core temperature with a sustained period (10 minutes or more) of moderate activity like jogging or easy running, before attempting to stretch.  Once again the vital blood supply and energy expenditure brings warmth and thus elasticity to the muscles.  Then stretches of the major areas – calves, hamstring, groin, quads, and upper body, should each be held still at the point of discomfort for at least 10 seconds, more if possible.  After training and a cool down jog or walk, a similar routine should be repeated.

Without such rigour in warmup and warmdown we are heading for inevitable injury, especially as our bodies age.  With the right approach our  effective running lives can be extended by years, not to mention the enhancement to our looks and well being.

We are lucky, but must not take our ability to run for granted.  I got a sharp reminder when I talked to Amnuay in the Symposium one Friday night.  She talked of her unfortunate tendency for getting caught in war zones.  In Thailand she was forced to flee her village as rockets came over from neighbouring Cambodia.  In Riyadh she was threatened by Saddam Hussain’s Scud missiles and had to take shelter.  “I give thanks for my life,” she said, putting her hands together and bowing her head involuntarily, as she does when thanking someone.

As I looked at her, I quietly gave thanks for mine too, and determined that I should not squander my opportunities with carelessness.
