Please
note that many races require that competitors carry waterproof clothing, map
and compass for the competitor’s safety. Failure to comply with a race
organiser's requirements will mean that you will be barred from taking part in
the race. Competitors should arrive at races prepared to carry any or all of
the following equipment: Windproof whole body cover, other body cover
appropriate to the conditions, map and compass suitable for navigating the
course, whistle, emergency food (long races). This equipment is mandatory at
all Cat A Long and Medium races.
If this
is the first time you have considered fell racing select a race distance well
under the distance you normally run on the road.
If you
retire during a race you MUST notify the officials at the finish.
If
you like the idea of fell running and would like to have a go please speak to
Chris.
All fell
races are given a grade indicating length and difficulty. Difficulty is
indicated by:
A, no less than 250 feet climb per
mile, not more than 20% on roads, at least 1 mile in length (NASTY);
B, not less than 125 feet climb per
mile, not more than 30% on roads (FAIRLY NASTY);
C, not less than 100 feet of climb
per mile, not more than 40% on roads and contain genuine fell terrain (NOT VERY
NASTY).
Length
is indicated by: L,
12 miles or more; M, 6 miles and over but less than 12 miles; S, under 6 miles.

With 176 entrants, a scenic course, a
generous sponsor (crosstrax), great facilities and the whole club behind the
event, the 1st Idle Trail race proved to be an amazing success,
especially for a club which is only three years old. We received a lot of
positive feedback from the event: Here are a couple of snap shots:
“Really enjoyed the course, good
atmosphere and facilities”.
“A good race, lovely route with variety, good facilities at the school,
well marshalled”.
“Many
thanks to you all for yesterday’s run, especially to Adrian who pushed us back
markers all the way to the finish!!”
“Great
route, well marshalled - tougher than I expected but pleased to get round
without stopping!! “
“I'd
certainly do it again - and at least it wasn't another T-Shirt at the end.
Thanks and well done”.
Thanks to everyone for their support in making the event so successful. We’ll
now look at making the 2006 event even better!!
Following
the women’s team success (2nd team behind Clayton Le Moors) at
Blackpool, Lisa Hall entered the Nottingham marathon on 11th
September and noted that we need 4 for a women’s team. We are therefore trying
to get 4 of us fit enough to run. It would be good to enter a men’s marathon
team, and then there’s the half marathon!!
Hopefully
this should be a well organised event and I’ve checked the details about drinks
stations and there will 12 drink stations in total on the marathon course. All
drink stations include water, but energy drinks are also available at mile 7.9
and 12.7 on the Half Marathon course, and there will be energy drinks and gels
at miles 15, 16.3, 18, 19, 19.9, 22.6 and 25.4 for Full Marathon runners.
The
cost of the race is £21.50 and team prizes are as follows:
Men's
and Women's Full and Half Team Prizes (4 to score)
1st:
£50 vouchers x 4, 2nd: £30 vouchers x 4, 3rd: £20 vouchers x 4
Entry
forms available at the club (or you can enter online).
Congratulations to Katy Ostick and partner Alex on the birth of their
first baby. Elizabeth Maria, who weighed 7lb 3oz, was born on Friday 24th
June. At the time we were all at the Idle Beer Festival awaiting news via text,
and were delighted when we heard the news. Congratulations and a warm welcome
to baby Elizabeth.
Good luck and best wishes to Donna Edmondson and Chris Booker as they
get married on 28th July.
The club says farewell to Doug Briggs as his new teaching job takes him
and his family abroad. Doug will be missed by Idle AC (not least in the cross
country season!) however it does
gives a few of the lads a shot at some of his club records. We hope that if Doug returns to this
area in the future that he’ll get in touch. Best of luck Doug.
Thursday
4th August – Away run from Shipley Glen (Car park behind old
Glen House pub) at 7pm.
Those of
you who missed the first away run on Sunday 10th July – Steve’s
Magical Mystery Tour missed a brilliant run from Harden Moor. The 12 mile
course included bits of the bunny run course, the Yorkshireman, Bronte Way and
Senior way paths. We had our photos taken next to a waterfall, underneath a
viaduct and one taken with a group of miniature horses. Many thanks to Steve
for organising this wonderful run.
Those wanting a local family day out on 14th
August might consider a visit to the Bingley Show in Myrtle Park. In addition
to the show’s agricultural and family attractions there will be a 3 mile (approx)
trail race on public footpaths around Bingley and St. Ives. The race has been
organised by Bingley Harriers and is £5 to enter, although that includes a free
t –shirt and free entry to the show (worth £6) to all who enter before 30th
July. Entry forms are available at the club or details can be obtained via
Bingley’s website: www.bingleyharriers.org.uk
Saturday 13th
Aug offers a good family day out with the added attraction of not one, but two
races. In past years we’ve had Idle AC vests in the 4 mile road race and in the fell race.
The 4 mile
road race runs along beautiful quiet Yorkshire Dales country lanes and starts
at 1.30pm. Entry forms are now
available at the club. The fell
race is run after the finish of the road race so it’s possible to run both
races.
For two
Saturdays in a row (see above) we can offer entertainment for all the family
with the second being the Burnsall Feast Sports on Saturday 20th August. The Sports opening starts at 1pm
with the brass band parade, various village sports and side shows. The
afternoon offers an undulating 10mile road race at 2.30pm and the famous
Burnsall Classic Fell race. (AS 1.5 miles/900’) at 5pm. Entry forms available at the club or visit
the website: www.burnsallsports.co.uk
and down load an
entry form.

This
month we welcome 1 new member – Amy Wright. Amy is a member of the
Wednesday night gang who shows loads of race potential. She’s keen to get her
10k time down to sub 50 and she ran the Idle Trail Race.
We have paid out cheques to NoEAA and to Hepworth & Idle
Cricket Club and although most members have paid their 2005 subs and it would
be great if those who haven’t yet paid (you know who you are!) could pay their
annual subs ASAP. Please complete a membership form and give/send £15 (£7.50
concessions) to me, cheque made payable to Idle AC.- Davina.
If you’d like to run the London Marathon in 2006 you will
need to enter using the official entry form that is within the official event
magazine called Marathon News. This will be available in all good sports shops
in August.
If you
have applied to run or have run the event in the last five years a copy of
Marathon News will be sent to you automatically.
Check out the London Marathon Website for details: www.london-marathon.co.uk
Successful and
unsuccessful applicants will receive a reply in early December 05. Anyone who is unsuccessful in their
entry will be eligible for the draw for the club entry, which normally takes
place at the Christmas Do. Idle AC
will have at least 2 club entries.
In addition
members gain an automatic place under the ‘good for your age’ system. If within
the last 18 months you have run between 2.45 and 3.00 (men aged 18-40) or sub
3.15 (men aged 41-59), you qualify automatically, and must fill in a different
form. Women aged 18-49 need to have run between 3.15and 3.45 in 2004 or 2005 to
qualify automatically.
Although
it seems a long time away please keep the evening of Friday 9th
December free as we have booked a room at Idle Working Men’s Club for our
Christmas Do. As with 2004 it will be a buffet and disco and (huge!!!)
raffle.
For the third year running we turned up in
force at Blackpool and what turned out to be one of the hottest days of the
year so far. This would have been lovely if we were all sun bathing on the
beach but to run a race, especially a marathon, it was fairly difficult. A
delay of 40 minutes at the start (in order to get the professional marshals on
the course!) led to problems of potential dehydration before we’d even started
it. Whilst I only speak for myself, a lack of water and isotonic drinks on the
course lead to further problems that certainly made me feel that I wouldn’t
support the race in the future. This is a real shame as Blackpool is the
marathon I’ve run most times and the one that I’ve always ‘encouraged’ others
to run. However Blackpool did have some good points, we had a great
weekend, good times from many runners in the half, notably Pete H and Jane
Lewis in her first ever half, Club records from Chris Stubbs (M40) and Trevor
Hooley (M50) in the marathon, and we came second women’s team, in the marathon:
Jo, me and Lisa H. One positive point is that it made a few of us decide to
enter a team in the Robin Hood marathon at Nottingham in September!! (see
below). As for doing it all again
next year?? A year is a long time and I’ll see what everyone else thinks before
I say I’m not doing it again. – Davina.

I viewed the starting line up at the first Idle trail
race with confidence and pride.
Months of preparation, of negotiation and planning by a dedicated team,
had led the club to this one special moment, when I was about to blow my
whistle to signal the start. In
what I felt was a brilliant piece of organizational delegation I had divided
the marshals into three teams – the start/finish team of which I was
leader, the canal team led by Steve Little, and the Woodlands team led by
Kay. My marshals were in
place. The idea was that I only
had to receive two calls to tell me the marshals on the whole course were in
place. Steve had already rung to
say his team were ready. Just as I
was beginning to worry, my mobile rang for a second time: “My marshals are all in place, Chris,”
came Kay’s confident voice, much to my relief. I asked the runners to take their marks, and blew my
whistle. Alison started her clocks
and locked them. We were away.
So what’s the point of it all, organising a race, that
is? The club is successful – membership is buoyant, we’re the cross
country league champions, people are succeeding and achieving in all events,
we’re well known across the north of England and beyond. Why bother with all the hard work and
expense?
Quite simply we must give something back. Yes we pay for race entries, but week
after week we benefit from the free services of countless volunteers at
races. The money does not go to
them – they do it for love of the sport. We must take our place among them.
Furthermore we have something to add to the race
calendar – a scenic trail race over a universally achievable distance
right in the middle of the Leeds Bradford conurbation. Our friends at Horsforth Harriers have
seen their well established 10k driven off the road by policing costs and
complaining road users, and this will be the fate of many road events over the
coming years. In fact my belief is
that the police would like to see all road events stopped, apart from one
national event at each distance, for example the London Marathon, Great North
Run, and a national 10k. Handily
this seems to correspond with a national trend among runners away from road and
towards multi terrain events.
An important factor, too, is the profile of our
club. I was determined that we
should devise an event which reflected our ethos. We tend to define other clubs by the events which they
host. We take them more seriously,
as they play a complete role in their sport. They work for us and with us to achieve the aim of athletics
at its broadest – to celebrate achievement through competition. We have now begun to be part of that
ongoing process.
Thus we were right to bide our time. By the time our first race had started
we had a strong team of people who knew what they were doing and were motivated
to do it. We achieved a positive
result, with wonderful feedback from competitors on all aspects of the
race. Particularly pleasing for me
were the comments about the good quality of the marshalling. Competitors encountered willing and
cheerful people who knew what they were doing. This leads me to my final reason in favour of
organising an open event. We have
learned in organizational terms how to work together as a cogent team. We have shown we can do it, and can
hold our heads up high among the most established and experienced clubs.
So we should be pleased with ourselves. But there is no room for complacency
– the post race meeting showed that. We were very close at times to minor, if not major
disasters.
And I heard the truth about that start – Kay and
Steve knew that I could not start the race without their calls. At ten to eleven they were still trying
to confirm all their marshals were in place. They knew they were all somewhere on site, but did not know
they were yet standing where they should be. Edward’s mobile was busy, and Chris had left his position to
see where he was. Michael was
still directing traffic. Quite
simply I had asked him to be in two places at once. At gone five to eleven Kay took an executive decision. She rang me. “My marshals are all in
place, Chris,” she said confidently. She was lying, of course. Steve had been too when he had rung 5 minutes earlier.
Well done everybody. We got away with it.
We succeeded.
-
Chris
