Each attendance at a “Club” designated race earns you 5 points (see below). 50% of the required points must be achieved by attendance at training sessions.

Please note that many races require that competitors carry waterproof clothing, map and compass for the competitor’s safety. Failure to comply with a race organiser's requirements will mean that you will be barred from taking part in the race. Competitors should arrive at races prepared to carry any or all of the following equipment: Windproof whole body cover, other body cover appropriate to the conditions, map and compass suitable for navigating the course, whistle, emergency food (long races). This equipment is mandatory at all Cat A Long and Medium races.
If this is the first time you have considered fell racing select a race distance well under the distance you normally run on the road.
If you retire during a race you MUST notify the officials at the finish.
If you like the idea of fell running and would like to have a go please speak to Chris.
All fell races are given a grade indicating length and difficulty. Difficulty is indicated by:
A, no less than 250 feet climb per mile, not more than 20% on roads, at least 1 mile in length (NASTY);
B, not less than 125 feet climb per mile, not more than 30% on roads (FAIRLY NASTY);
C, not less than 100 feet of climb per mile, not more than 40% on roads and contain genuine fell terrain (NOT VERY NASTY).
Length is indicated by: L, 12 miles or more; M, 6 miles and over but less than 12 miles; S, under 6 miles.

Following the women’s team success (2nd team behind Clayton Le Moors) at Blackpool, we have entered a women’s team at Nottingham. Jo, Lisa H, Davina and Laura (who kindly agreed to run as we needed 4 for a team!!). In addition we have a women’s team in the half marathon. We also have a number of men entered in the full and half marathon.
Hopefully this should be a well organised event and I’ve checked the details about drinks stations and there will 12 drink stations in total on the marathon course. All drink stations include water, but energy drinks are also available at mile 7.9 and 12.7 on the Half Marathon course, and there will be energy drinks and gels at miles 15, 16.3, 18, 19, 19.9, 22.6 and 25.4 for Full Marathon runners.
There’s still time to enter if you haven’t already done so and the easiest way is to enter on line www.robinhoodmarathon.co.uk
The team prizes are as follows:
Men's and Women's Full and Half Team Prizes (4 to score)
1st: £50 vouchers x 4, 2nd: £30 vouchers x 4, 3rd: £20 vouchers x 4
PS: I contacted the organisers of Blackpool marathon to enquire about our team prizes and was told there are no team prizes in 2005 (despite the information before the race that said prizes for first three teams!!!). Hopefully Nottingham will honour the prize winners with prizes stated as above – Davina.
We now
have entry forms for the Leeds Abbey Dash on Sunday 27th November.
Please get your entries in as soon as possible as the race soon reaches its
limit. You can now enter online for this year's Help the Aged Leeds Abbey
Dash, sponsored by Abbey. The race follows a fast, flat course which starts
in Leeds city centre, goes up Kirkstall Road, past the ancient ruins of
Kirkstall Abbey and finishes outside the Town Hall.
This year there is a pre-event aerobic warm up, kindly supported
by BUPA Care Homes. It will take place in Victoria Gardens, The Headrow, from
8.30am.
Reebok have kindly donated £3,000 worth of prizes including £250
should anyone break the race record (male 28.45mins, female 32.15mins). You can
take part in the race either individually, or as part of the
Corporate team or Club team challenges.
Monies raised from the Help the Aged Leeds Abbey Dash will go
towards funding older people's projects in the Leeds and West Yorkshire area.
Last year, Help the Aged funded projects which helped to reduce loneliness and
isolation amongst older people. The organisers are keen to point out that by
running the dash everyone is making a real difference to the lives of older
people. Email to events@helptheaged.org.uk
to enter online.
Hopefully most of you will stay injury free and won’t need to visit a physio but every now and again I like to remind everyone about Haworth Physiotherapy. The practice is run by Rebecca Marshall who is chartered and state registered. Rebecca specialises in the area of Musculo-skeletal physiotherapy which means the assessment and treatment of sports injuries, back and neck pain, joint problems and post surgical conditions. I along with other members have all visited Rebecca and I can recommend her. As a runner (and cyclist) herself she fully understands the importance that runners place on their sport.
Initial 45 min consultation - £30. Follow up treatment (30 mins) - £25. Her telephone number is: 01535 648373. Address 5 Main Street, Haworth. – Davina.
Whilst we would encourage ALL members to run the West Yorkshire Winter League, those who prefer off road running might like to take part in the Complete Runner events as additional races.
The fixtures are: Sat 15th Oct – York, Rowntrees/Knavesmire Harriers, Sunday 30th Oct – Otley, Eastholme Fields, 19/20 November –venue to be confirmed. Sunday 4th December – Nunroyd Park, Guiseley. The women’s race is 5-5.5km at approx 1.45pm and the men’s race is 9-9.5km at approx 2.15pm. Chris will enter teams and members will be able to run by collecting a number from Chris and paying £2 per runner per race. There is a team event (6 men, 4 women) and it would be good to get men’s and/or women’s teams out at a couple of events at least. Please let Chris know if you are interested in running any/all of the races.
Please note if any of the West Yorks Winter League dates clash with the above races members will be expected to run the WYWL fixtures.

If you’d like to run the London Marathon in 2006
you will need to enter using the official entry form that is within the
official event magazine called Marathon News. WE have copies at the club or the
nearest stockist is at JJB Sports at Morrisons Complex. The closing date for
entries is 21st October 2005.
If
you have applied to run or have run the event in the last five years a copy of
Marathon News will be sent to you automatically.
Check out the London Marathon Website for details: www.london-marathon.co.uk
Successful and unsuccessful applicants will receive a reply in early December 05. Anyone who is unsuccessful in their entry will be eligible for the draw for the club entries, which normally takes place at the Christmas Do. Idle AC will have at least 2 club entries. We hope (if everyone gets in!!) to have a large number of London marathon runners in 2006.
In addition members gain an automatic place under the ‘good for your age’ system. If within the last 18 months you have run between 2.45 and 3.00 (men aged 18-40) or sub 3.15 (men aged 41-59), you qualify automatically, and must fill in a different form. Women aged 18-49 need to have run between 3.15and 3.45 in 2004 or 2005 to qualify automatically.
Although it seems a long time away please keep the evening of Friday 9th December free as we have booked a room at Idle Working Men’s Club for our Christmas Do. As with 2004 it will be a buffet and disco and (huge!!!) raffle.
ANY enthusiastic distance runner who reads around the subject will eventually come across the name of the late Arthur Lydiard, the renowned and controversial New Zealander who revolutionised theory and practice in running training.
To many he was simply the first exponent of Long Slow Distance (LSD) running as the basis of all training. Yet what is perhaps often misunderstood is that he didn’t first apply this to marathon runners. His athletes, drawn from a small group whom he coached in the local area of Auckland, New Zealand, achieved astonishing Olympic success in middle distance events. In essence, even his 800 metre runners spent a significant amount of time doing work which a marathon runner would recognise, whilst Roger Bannister and his contemporaries lived on a diet of speedwork and more speedwork, striving to achieve the first four minute mile.
Lydiard berated those who attempted to emulate the Kenyans, because they made a basic error when analysing their training. Yes, the Kenyan athletes do appear to place a huge emphasis on speedwork, yet before that they spend an entire lifetime building up an endurance base. Without that lifetime background European athletes would simply end up injured by a level of speedwork with which they could not cope. One despairing British coach even suggested that we could best catch up with the Kenyans by investing heavily in their education system – more schools would mean the children wouldn’t have so far to run to school every day.
The relevance of Lydiard’s theories for us today is in the importance of aerobic fitness. This is our level of endurance – our ability to keep running steadily for a long way. Without this basis, speed is irrelevant, for aerobic fitness is the foundation stone upon which we build everything else. Throughout our running lives then, that regular long run should be there, a steady effort measured in hours rather than just minutes, which should only be left out within a couple of weeks of a crucial race. My school PE teacher said simply “You should end up breathing the same when you run as you do when you walk.” He meant that through regular steady distance training we should achieve a level of conditioning which makes running the natural state.
We have partly achieved this, if as true distance runners we have made running a component part of our daily lives, rather than an occasional activity which can be picked up and put down at will. It cannot.
Within the club we attempt to reflect this in our periodised training year. So in September the emphasis in coached sessions on Tuesdays is on endurance. We are aiming towards a competition period in December leading through to January, to cover the cross country league races. So October will contain a mix of endurance and speed work, and November will concentrate on speed. Therefore continuity of attendance is vital, so that on your endurance foundation you can build speed endurance (the ability to run more quickly for a sustained period), and then pure speed over shorter distances.
Yet if all else fails, we should continue to maintain and build our aerobic endurance base. We are united by a common urge to run, and all our other differences fade alongside this constant factor. If you are a true distance runner at heart, you will not give up anyway, but remember that in the Club you will thrive as part of a team with common goals.
- Chris
