You can now enter online for this year's Help the Aged Leeds Abbey Dash, sponsored by Abbey. The race follows a fast, flat course which starts in Leeds city centre, goes up Kirkstall Road, past the ancient ruins of Kirkstall Abbey and finishes outside the Town Hall.
This year there is a pre-event aerobic warm up, kindly supported by BUPA Care Homes. It will take place in Victoria Gardens, The Headrow, from 8.30am.

The organisers are keen to point out that by running the dash everyone is making a real difference to the lives of older people. Email to events@helptheaged.org.uk to enter online.

It’s official…….

We have now been officially  told that Idle AC’s 4 strong women’s team of Jo, Lisa H, Davina & Laura finished 3rd in the Nottingham marathon, each winning a £20 voucher.

West Yorkshire Winter League 2005/6 season

The League meeting took place on for Friday 9th September. At this meeting the dates and venues of the 5 West Yorkshire Winter League cross country events were arranged.  This is the main league that we encourage members of Idle AC to run. Last year, our third year in the League, was a huge success with 23-32 members at each race. Last year we were able to show that despite our small size we are capable of achieving a great deal and we emerged as league champions.  In addition the men’s team picked up the men’s trophy ahead of bigger more established clubs.  We also had the following individual trophy winners:

Steve Bottomley – 2nd man, Doug Briggs –5th man.

Donna Edmondson –3rd woman, Lisa Flesher-1st F35.

This will be Idle AC’s fourth year in the WYWL and it’s important that as a club we all try to commit to running in all 5 fixtures if at all possible as these are TEAM events.  Last year we proved that we could field a fairly strong team when the whole club runs. This year we have many more members who will be a real asset in these events. Please all take the opportunity to ask the Committee (and other members) any questions about the WYWL, particularly if you are new to cross country running.  The League, whilst competitive, is friendly and encouraging to all levels.

To count for individual awards you must complete all five events, and your scores will be added together. At the end of each race each individual is given a tag which denotes their points scored in the race. This works as follows: The first male runner gets 200 points, second gets 199, third gets 198 and so on. The first female runner gets 100 points, second gets 99, third gets 98 and so on.  So in addition to the team positions, individual results are available after each event and individual and category winners are presented with individual trophies at the Presentation Evening held at the end of the season (10th March 06 hosted by Stainland Lions).

There are 8 clubs that form the WYWL: Idle A.C, Pudsey Pacers, Skipton A.C., Leeds & Bradford Tri, Dewsbury Road Runners, Baildon Runners, Stainland Lions and St. Bede’s.  The fixtures for 2005/6 are confirmed as follows:

Date            Host club                                         Venue

1.Nov 13th     LBT                   New course at Temple Newsam.

2.Dec 4th      Pudsey Pacers   Black Carr woods, Pudsey. Fancy dress/silly hats.

3.Jan 8th   Neutral event jointly hosted by LBT & Pudsey Pacers. Bramley Falls Park

4. Jan 29th     Baildon Runners     Tong Park, Baildon.

5. Feb 19th    Stainland Lions       Possible new course from Heath Rugby Club.

All are 11am starts. Full details will be circulated to club contacts prior to each event.

Whilst the League does offer individual trophy positions, its primary objective is team competition.  The five team scores are added together to decide the following team trophies:

1st Combined Team, 2nd Combined Team, 3rd Combined Team.

1st Male Team.

1st Female team.

1st Vets Team (combination of male/females).

A club team is the first seven men to cross the line (which must include 2 vets), and the first three women (including 1 vet), in each event.

The vets’ team is the 2 male and the one female counting vets added together.

Different runners may score in different races - it’s just first past the post on the day.

The first Combined Team can enter the National Cross Country Final and the 2nd Combined Team can enter the Plate Race at the National Final which will take place at Nottingham on 19th March 06.  Further details will be circulated prior to each event.

Any questions please speak to Chris as he is not only Secretary of the WYWL but he is the only runner to have run all 65 consecutive races in the past 13 years (Davina has slacked and has only run 63!).

As members may be aware December 02 saw the start of a yearly tradition for Idle AC – the annual Sewage Works Surprise club handicap race! The race is open to all members and will be run as a 4 mile Handicap race from the Stansfield Arms Pub at Apperley Bridge, starting at 10am on Sunday 18th December 05. Fancy dress is optional but it all adds to the fun and entertains passing motorists!!  There is a special annual trophy for the winner, which was won last year by Stephen Edwards. Richard Lyons finished in second place with Clare Sweeney, dressed as Andy Pandy in 3rd place.

We have again arranged a presentation afternoon, with hot buffet, at the Symposium in Idle at a cost of £5 adults and £2.50 children per plate. Please write your names on the list at the club if you are running and/or attending the presentation.

Christmas Do 2005

Come and celebrate on Friday 9th December as Idle AC celebrates its fourth Christmas party at Idle Working Men’s Club. As with last year it will be a buffet, disco and another bumper secret raffle – please give any suitable (or unsuitable!) raffle prizes to Kay ASAP so she can wrap them up. The fun starts at 8 pm and all members, family (adults) and friends are welcome – it’s a big place and we need to fill it!  The price is £7.50 per person, payable on the night (or to Davina in advance). The Christmas Do will also have the London Marathon club Entries draw (Please bring rejection slips to be entered into the draw). We will also have a questionnaire for members to vote for the club attendance points races for 2006. Please write your name on the list at the club if you are joining the festivities.

Coached sessions on Wednesdays

Following the success of Wednesday nights when we regularly have 15+ runners we decided to offer a coached session on the first Wednesday in each month. This started on Wednesday 5th Oct at 6.30pm when we had 17 runners. All joined in a fairly tough hill session and many commented that they really enjoyed it!! (strange). Anyone is welcome to join us on Wednesday nights at 6.30pm for a run. The next Wednesday coached session takes place on 2nd November – Davina.

New Members

This month we welcome 3 new members – Judith Metcalfe, Stephen Wolstenhulme and Claire McConnell. Both Judith & Stephen have been regulars at the Tuesday night coached sessions. Having run 10k races Judith and Stephen are training up to run a 10 mile race and they seem keen on having a go at the WYWL cross countries.

Claire initially joined the Wednesday group after seeing our website and despite not having done much running previously Claire improved both her speed and stamina via the Wednesday night runs. The introduction of the monthly coached sessions on Wednesday’s proved to Claire that she would be able to join the club on Tuesdays.

Guy Fawkes 10: Sunday 6th November. 10.30am.

We now have entry forms for this popular 10 mile hilly course which has the first and last miles on forest trail bridleways from the historic village of Ripley.

I Hate Running!

Dear Davina and Chris

I am just emailing you to say that i hate running.  I started pretty well at brid yesterday and i was all set to get a pb but this guy from baildon was really doing my head in spitting about every 5 seconds so i gave him a really dirty look and he apologised but he was still doing my head in (i didn't bring my ipod because it's a bit antisocial but i think i should have brought it since i am obviously quite antisocial anyway and it would mean i could drown out all the spitting sounds and the women who sound like they're on the brink of orgasm when there's still 11 miles to go- is there really any need??) and i had sore legs from that stupid cross country and i went in a really bad mood and got really slow (because i didnt want to get close to a pb because that would just be annoying) and was overtaken by millions of people and i got in an even worse bad doom gloom mood before i was brought back to reality by tripping over and landing flat on my face and then all these people stopped to check i was okay and then i just burst into tears and walked for a while and managed to keep crying in the hope that a marshall would get me a lift to the end but they didn't and then i was at the 10 mile marker and i felt fine by then and ran to the end. i don't know what time i did. so anyway. sorry i should have used more punctuation there.

You have prob noticed but laura is missing from the cross country results (she was 2
behind me). maybe it doesn't make any difference. And we have finally got our nottingham vouchers but the letter was a bit rubbish wasn't it?

Cath might start coming to the club again since her leg is better.

From The Coach…

Adrian rang me from the travel agents on Saturday morning.  “We’ve been stuck here for an hour – it’s doing my head in!  You’d better set off without me, and I’ll catch up with you later.”

So I picked up Kay and Steve, and we headed for York racecourse, and our first cross country race of the new season.  When we got there the rest of the women’s team had already completed two laps of a course consisting of every clothes shop York has to offer.

The old Morrisons beach shelter went up, and soon Kay was sitting in it putting on the most dazzlingly new pair of Walsh fell shoes I have ever seen.  When I looked at Steve I realised his were the same.  Kay spent a few minutes trying to rub mud onto hers to stop them looking quite so bright.  The studs on Walshes are pyramid shaped, so they grip the ground, and to discourage the mud clogging which renders many impressive looking trail shoe treads useless.  On hard ground though, as Kay noticed, new Walshes feel odd because the rubber gives, and you get a sensation of slight movement left or right. We could have run this race in trail or even road shoes, as the going was so firm – as it often is at the beginning of the cross country season, when the last vestiges of summer have faded into cooler but still often mild early autumn days.  This is good practice, as pyramid studs wear quickly, a relatively small area of rubber taking all the body’s weight.  Sadly mine are mucky, flat and rounded from summer fell races.

As I observed the scene of falling leaves from our camp near the start area, Adrian appeared.  We quizzed him about his nightmare holiday booking session.  “New England!” he said.

“Ah! New England in the Fall.” I offered, remembering that people go there for the magnificent Autumn colours.  Steve kicked a pile of brown leaves towards Adrian, saying “Can’t you just take Elaine a bag of these? It’d be cheaper.”  Looking at Adrian’s feet I noticed a brand new pair of New Balance Studs.  They looked hefty, and each stud had a blunt metal spike in it to aid grip and extend stud life.

After the race Adrian didn’t reckon the new shoes had helped much.  The total lack of mud had also left the Walshes very new-looking.  “Well at least it’s a benchmark,” said Adrian.  And so often it’s true – the first cross country can be a nasty shock.  It’s so much more physically and mentally taxing than road, even in a comparatively flat event like York.  The best approach is just to gain off-road race experience, and not to go off too fast.  If unsure, just go steady for the first ten minutes, to avoid oxygen debt.  Then as the season goes on, and we get into our league, you should start to see a gradual improvement in performance, as your strength and endurance develops.

The courses will get tougher as the weather and ground conditions deteriorate through the winter, and those bright new shoes will lose their lustre, but they will really start to earn their keep.

I think it’s best to avoid travel agents at any time of year.  Who needs autumn and winter sunshine, when I can look forward to that special moment at 11am on November 13th at Temple Newsam, when I will shout “Good morning everybody!” to the assembled field at our first Winter League event.  Here we go again!
