There will be two extra speed sessions on Saturday 1st
April
and Saturday 15th April, both at 2pm in the field at Nab Wood Sports
Centre. You can pay a small amount
to use the outdoor changing and shower facilities at the Sports Centre
afterwards if you wish.
The sessions are aimed at London and other marathon runners, or
anyone wishing to work on their speed endurance. If you wish to take part, just turn up on the day. As the sessions will be run on grass,
in wet conditions bring spikes or Walshes. They will be as follows:
1st
April 5
x 1500m (rep is 2 laps of field) (short
recovery)
15th
April 7
x 1500m (short
recovery)
Recoveries can be timed, or if you have a pulse rate monitor it
can be used for a very accurate recovery measurement. Simply come knowing your resting heart rate – measure
it whilst lying in bed before you get up in the morning! - Chris.
Please
note that many races require that competitors carry waterproof clothing, map
and compass for the competitor’s safety. Failure to comply with a race
organiser's requirements will mean that you will be barred from taking part in
the race. Competitors should arrive at races prepared to carry any or all of
the following equipment: Windproof whole body cover, other body cover
appropriate to the conditions, map and compass suitable for navigating the
course, whistle, emergency food (long races). This equipment is mandatory at
all Cat A Long and Medium races.
If this
is the first time you have considered fell racing select a race distance well
under the distance you normally run on the road.
If you
retire during a race you MUST notify the officials at the finish.
If
you like the idea of fell running and would like to have a go please speak to
Chris.
All fell
races are given a grade indicating length and difficulty. Difficulty is indicated
by:
A, no less than 250 feet climb per
mile, not more than 20% on roads, at least 1 mile in length (NASTY);
B, not less than 125 feet climb
per mile, not more than 30% on roads (FAIRLY NASTY);
C, not less than 100 feet of climb
per mile, not more than 40% on roads and contain genuine fell terrain (NOT VERY
NASTY).
Length
is indicated by: L,
12 miles or more; M, 6 miles and over but less than 12 miles; S, under 6 miles.

What an
achievement for Idle to be named as Yorkshire Club of the Year in the UK Athletics
Club Awards for 2006.
These
awards are intended to recognise and reward Clubs, Volunteers, Officials,
Coaches and Partnerships for their contribution to the sport of Athletics
throughout the preceding 12-month period. See UK Athletics website for more
details.
This
is a two stage approach:
Phase
1 – Celtic Nation and English Regional Awards
Each
Celtic Nation and English Region makes a series of awards, and select winners
according to the criteria laid down. A panel, selected from within each
geographic area, then makes awards having considered every nomination made by
the sport.
Each
Panel recognises winners and runners-up and local publicity is then initiated
and linked to national recognition, with support from UK Athletics.
Phase
2 – UK Awards
Each
winner from Phase 1 is then put forward as a nomination to the National Panel,
which will then select UK winners. Every nominee is invited to attend an awards
ceremony, where the UK winners are then announced.
Idle
AC won in the following category:
Club
of the Year - Off Track (road running, hill and fell, cross country)
In order to win this award we demonstrated our achievements based on
the resources available to us relating to our aims and objectives (within our
Development Plan). These awards are not solely based solely upon membership or
performance levels but they recognise achievement against resource, facility,
local dynamics, etc.
The achievement is in recognition that though Idle AC is
still only four years old, our members are committed to the club ethos of
progress through training, and a belief in what a small club is able to achieve
through team work.
It recognises that we have a structured
approach to coach development and training, and in the fact that we are able to
provide strong team and individual performances in all endurance
disciplines.
The award also recognizes that we bring many newcomers
into the sport with our successful ‘informal’ Wednesday night group which
encourages and supports new runners.
In addition it is acknowledged that communication is
the key to the club’s success. Since formation we have produced a monthly
newsletter, ‘Idle Gossip’ to a high standard which has become a vital source of
both information and interesting editorial content for members. Our highly regarded, regularly updated
website is also recognised.
The award seeks to acknowledge success within the past
12 months and part of the award is in recognition that February 2005 saw the
highlight of the club’s short history when 29 members ran the final West
Yorkshire Winter League event at Skipton, the Club finishing as overall League
and Men’s Champions ahead
of bigger more established clubs.
In addition our
hosting of the first Idle Trail Race in July 05 was also hailed as a success. With
176 entrants and much positive feedback it is hoped that our race will become a premier event in Yorkshire.
However the
award is for ALL members of Idle AC. It shows that the whole club works
together to ensure that we achieve the objectives set out in our Club
Development Plan. Our success has been such that other clubs have contacted us
to look at our approaches and methods.
Indeed the club is widely recognized as a great success across the North
of England and beyond.
A Presentation
will take place during the summer period.
Following our success in hosting the 1st
Idle Trail Race we are now organising the second race which we hope will be
even bigger and better than last year. We received lots of very positive
feedback about the event and this year we have a faster improved course. Entry forms will be available shortly
since we have now received our race permit. Once again Crosstrax will be one of
our main sponsors.
We have now formed a committee to oversee the main
race organization, although we will be calling on many more club members to
assist with jobs on that weekend and in particular on the day so please all try
to be available (with family and friends!) to help.
The race committee are: Chris Smith, Davina Smith, Kay
Gambles, Martin Burnside, Steve Little, Peter Vickers, Amy Wright and Alison Garlick
(results).
In past years Idle AC have been the largest club for all three races and this year we hope to be even stronger for this series of 5k races around Esholt on Wednesday nights on 3rd, 10th and 17th May 06, starting at 7.30pm. Get a ‘league’ position by completing all 3 races. Entry forms are available at the club. The first race is our club race for 2006, get your entries in.
When Idle AC was formed in 2002 we had no base (we met in a bus shelter in Morrisons car park), we were unaffiliated, we had no money and no kit.
We always, with the support of our members, had a belief in what Idle AC could aspire to be. The huge achievements in road, cross country and fell running and the growth in membership have shown how the club can succeed. Last year we hosted the first Idle Trail Race, which we intend to improve and develop.
PS look out for the trumpets and fireworks on the website!!
Idle AC’s fourth AGM will be held on Thursday 6th April at 7.15pm at the Cricket Club. This is your big chance to air your views on the club’s present and future policy and activities. Please note that there will be no club training on this date. An agenda will be available to all members by late March and members are now invited to submit any agenda items to any committee member no later than Monday 13th March. Members are also reminded that subs will be collected (£15) at the AGM when a membership form will need to be completed.
It would be appreciated if all subs could be paid by the beginning of May, when the Club must make payments to the governing body and the cricket club.
The Black Sheep
Brewery Race Series is 6 separate running events organised by towns and
villages in scenic North Yorkshire. The objective is to complete 5 out of 6
races, 3 x 10k's plus the 10 mile and 1/2 marathon. Runners who complete the
required races will be awarded with a personalised plaque including their name,
total time and position.
Category winners will be presented with Age Group Plaques plus prize vouchers.
Prizes and plaques will be awarded to
the first five Male/Female runners overall, plus the first 3 in the following
age groups:- MO/40, MO/45, MO/50, MO/55, MO/60, MO/65, - FO/35,
FO/40, FO/45, FO/50, FO/55, FO/60,
FO/65.
THE RACES
Ripon 10 mile: On Sunday May 14th, from Ripon Cricket Club.
Melmerby 10k: On Sunday May 28th, from the village of Melmerby.

news and results visit: www.blacksheeprunners.co.uk
The Black Sheep series is highly recommended by members of Idle AC. Lots of
the events involve fun runs for the children and are generally good days out.
The Keswick to Barrow Walk is a 40 mile sponsored stroll
through some of the country’s finest landscapes. The route starts on the
southern side of the Lake District town of Keswick and winds its way through
some of the most beautiful scenery to the Victorian town of Barrow in Furness
on the coast of the Irish Sea. Some of my work colleagues did it last
year & thoroughly enjoyed it. I think it is something that could be
done by members of Idle AC as a change from runs like the Blackpool
event. It’s a long way I know but you do not have to run it all, after
all it’s classed as a “walk”.
It is essentially a “sponsored walk” but there is no
minimum amount of sponsorship demanded & there is no entry fee! The
idea is that you get a team together of up to 10 people & between you raise
some money for a given charity. The size of the team isn’t important nor
is the amount of cash raised. There are checkpoints along the way with
food & drinks available (at a small cost). Alternatively we can have
someone with a “support vehicle” with sandwiches & energy drinks etc if
there’s interest & a willing driver amongst us.
As a guide, last year there were 1008 entries with the
slowest time being 16hrs 40mins. If you do manage to run it all you will
get inside the top 50 with a time of around 6hrs 45mins. The winning male
last year did it in a time of 4hrs 42mins & the winning lady’s time was
5hrs 50mins. I believe that Idle AC could attain some very good results
& end up with a good team prize to boot.
For further info look at their excellent website at: http://www.keswick2barrow.co.uk/home.asp
There is definite interest in this event from club
members. Please write your name on the notice board at the club if you are
interested.
It is with some regret that I
must announce the end of Idle Athletic Club. It’s been a wonderful four years, and I thank you all very
much for your huge contributions to our fine club. Yet we can no longer avoid the inevitable.
Admittedly this is difficult to
believe at a time when we see continued strong interest in the sport –
not the boom and bust of the early days when people first jumped onto the
charity/marathon/fitness bandwagon – but increasing numbers of people
getting out and running, and competing in races, consistently year on year.
The inevitability is created by
the way that people now approach our sport. The very accessibility of distance running to any one who
wants to “have a go” is the death knell for clubs as we know them. Anyone can just decide to go out for a
jog, get together one or two friends, and then perhaps enter an event. There is a huge amount of free
information in the media, and now of course direct access to anything
whatsoever anywhere, through the internet.
We noticed a definite trend in
the entries for the Idle Trail Race.
More than half of those who took part were unattached runners. The event had a negligible effect on
recruitment, and many of those runners remain unattached. The trend is confirmed in Governing
Body reports. Since 1990 there has
been a steady increase in the number of unattached runners entering races, to
the point where many races consist mainly of unattached runners. This tended initially to have club
secretaries licking their lips at all these potential new members coming into
the sport in their area. However
whilst recruitments are made in this manner, it is my contention that an
increasing number of unattached runners simply have no intention of joining a
club.
This is the modern way. It is reflected throughout our consumer
orientated society in a pick and mix or cherry picking mentality. We expect simply to be offered services
and to pay for them, buying only what suits our very individual tastes and
lifestyle.
This is where distance running
clubs have completely failed to move with the times, and thus have ensured
their own demise. By and large
they are run according to antiquated concepts and mentalities. Clubs are not selective, in that they
allow people of all abilities and from all parts of society to become
members. Any club therefore
reflects the society or community in which it exists. There will be independent members, self starters, ambitious
runners, jolly social types, shy people, those who lack confidence, people with
problems, and indeed those who are vulnerable. The club attempts to serve them all according to their
needs, so that each can achieve the appropriate level of success. In return it will expect all its
members to give something back – be it in terms of flying the club
colours at races, publicising the club through high performance recognised in
the media, or by helping with club operation and administration, in training
and at races.
In sociological terms, like an
old fashioned extended family the club supports its members because they are
“family”, not for gain, and the club member reciprocates. A modern nuclear family however has
only a modified extended family – one where relationships are continued only
if they are useful to both parties.
In running terms, this latter
scenario is where the unattached runners lie. They do not develop a relationship with a club if they see
no benefit to them. They can choose
simply to run with their friends when they want and how they want. It is no hardship for them to pay a
little extra to enter races. This
money does filter partly into the sport, but these people are never going to be
available as manpower, as helpers, within the sport. They are simply
takers. Unfortunately of course
there are also people within clubs who retain this attitude, bringing a
consumer orientated approach to club membership.
Under this kind of pressure
traditional clubs may well not survive.
Can we? My intention at the
beginning of this article was to shock, and then to bring about reflection on
the qualities of our club. As we
approach the AGM and the second Idle Trail Race, we must ensure that our club, our
running community, is not taken for granted, and that as members we each play
our part. We have won an award
which demonstrates that our method works.
By working together, and each taking a little responsibility for the
club that gives us so much, we can ensure not only survival, but prosperity.
-
Chris.
