Pudsey 10k Challenge: Sunday 23rd July at 10.45am

We hope that club members (all those not running the final Black Sheep race at Burton Leonard) will support Pudsey and enter their 10k challenge, especially as they will be supporting the Idle Trail Race.  The course is scenic challenging mixed terrain offering something for everyone. All finishers get a T Shirt and there are team prizes (last year we received males and female team prizes). In addition there is a 2 mile family fun run at 10am and a Park Fun Run (approx 400meteres) for the under 8’s at 9.30am. Last year they reached their 400 race limit and are expected to do so again. Therefore get your entries in ASAP. Entry forms are available at the club or via Pudsey’s website: www.pudseypacers.com

Idle Beer Festival

Please support the Hepworth & Idle cricket Club when they stage their fourth Idle Beer Festival on the weekend of Friday 23rd – Sunday 25th June, particularly on the Friday evening.  This may prove to be something of a social for Idle AC. Entry price to be confirmed but last year it was £1. Opening times: Fri 7-11pm, Sat 2-5pm and 7-11pm, Sun 2-5pm.

Summer Away runs:

This summer we will have 2 ‘away’ runs, one on a Thursday evening and one on a Sunday morning.  The dates are as follows:

Thursday 29th June – Away run from Haworth (venue to be confirmed) at 7pm for Chris’s Summer Special.

Sunday 9th July – Steve’s Magical Mystery Moors Tour. Keep the date free details to follow but last year was a wonderful outing over Harden Moor!!

Fell Races: May to end July 06.

Please note that many races require that competitors carry waterproof clothing, map and compass for the competitor’s safety. Failure to comply with a race organiser's requirements will mean that you will be barred from taking part in the race. Competitors should arrive at races prepared to carry any or all of the following equipment: Windproof whole body cover, other body cover appropriate to the conditions, map and compass suitable for navigating the course, whistle, emergency food (long races). This equipment is mandatory at all Cat A Long and Medium races.

If this is the first time you have considered fell racing select a race distance well under the distance you normally run on the road.

If you retire during a race you MUST notify the officials at the finish.

If you like the idea of fell running and would like to have a go please speak to Chris.

All fell races are given a grade indicating length and difficulty. Difficulty is indicated by:

A, no less than 250 feet climb per mile, not more than 20% on roads, at least 1 mile in length (NASTY);

B, not less than 125 feet climb per mile, not more than 30% on roads (FAIRLY NASTY);

C, not less than 100 feet of climb per mile, not more than 40% on roads and contain genuine fell terrain (NOT VERY NASTY).

Length is indicated by: L, 12 miles or more; M, 6 miles and over but less than 12 miles; S, under 6 miles.

The Idle Trail Race – Sunday 16th July 2005

Following our success in hosting the 1st Idle Trail Race we are now organising the second race which we hope will be even bigger and better than last year. We received lots of very positive feedback about the event and this year we have a faster improved course.  Entry forms are out now and entries are coming in thick n fast.  Once again Crosstrax will be sponsoring the race along with Airedale.

We have formed a committee to oversee the main race organization, although we will be calling on many more club members to assist with jobs on that weekend and in particular on the day so please all try to be available (with family and friends!) to help.

The race committee are: Chris Smith, Davina Smith, Kay Gambles, Martin Burnside, Steve Little, Peter Vickers, Amy Wright and Alison Garlick (results).

Subs are now due.

Idle AC’s fourth AGM took place on Thursday 6th April and minutes have been circulated to all members and are also available on the website.

Annual subs for 2006/7 are now due and it would be appreciated if all subs could be paid now, as we have now paid the cricket club and NoEAA fees. Please complete a membership form and give £15 (£7.50 concessions) to Davina ASAP. Many thanks.

Washburn Valley Relay – Friday 14th July, 7.15pm

We have been invited to this 4 x 4 mile relay for men’s, women’s or mixed teams, around the Swinsty and Fewston reservoirs above Otley.  It’s promoted by Otley AC but the West Yorkshire Winter League have identified it as a summer event between the clubs.  Therefore we can have a go for both open and Winter League positions.

It should be an interesting evening out – let us know if you are interested as it would be good to get as many teams of any standard out as possible – it’s only a fiver a team!  Otley are organising practice runs, and we have maps showing the legs, which are all on paths around or near the reservoirs.

Carr Lane Challenge 5 mile race.

Those of you not running in the Burn Valley Half (Black Sheep Series) might like to consider the Carr Lane Challenge 5 (approx) on Saturday 1st July at 2pm. This is a scenic trail race which forms part of the Wrose Carnival. It should be a great local family day out. Its only £4 to enter (entry forms are available at the club). Alternatively if you don’t fancy running but are available to help out as a marshal let us know and we’ll pass on your details to the Wrose Carnival Committee.

Keswick to Barrow Event: Saturday 6th May 06

The 40th Annual Keswick to Barrow Walk (K2B) got underway in perfect conditions with the 1591 entrants being the best turnout since 1998.  The field of 230 teams which reflects a 30% increase over 2005 (1212 entered) included 77 teams from outside Cumbria, 30 junior teams and a team of 6 paraplegic hand cyclists. Some 1340 walkers (84%) managed to complete the course with the highest number of casualties (61) falling at Lowick as the course starts to ascend punishing 4 mile stretch up onto the moors.

9 of us formed team ‘Idle Runners’. We didn’t really know what to expect and it had been a logistical challenge to ensure that we, along with Graham Little who provided our support vehicle, were all at the start in Keswick for 6am.  It turned out to be a glorious bright sunny day and the scenery was breathtaking.  The course was challenging but the sense of achievement that we all experienced at the end of the day is something that will be very difficult to beat.

From The Coach…

Typical! The Idle AC entrants provided another fine exhibition of distance running at the Ripon 10 miler.  On a testing, hilly, partially off road course Simon Bellwood, Richard Lyons and Lisa Flesher were in the top end of the field with pb’s, Kay and Steve recorded astonishing times considering their K2B40 efforts the previous weekend.  Gary, Amy, Davina, Amnuay and Ana completed a fine club turnout.  I knew how pleased Kay was, since I got a whack on the back with a pile of entry forms when she emerged from the finish funnel behind me.  Well her actions do so often speak louder and more eloquently than her words.  It was good to see them all come in, to hear their positive responses.  I was pleased that people were picking up Idle Trail Race entry forms and talking about the event.  Joe and Katie caused uproar in the clubhouse and played chicken in the finish funnel, making light of an hour’s wait for their father and godfather.  How could the day be better?

Well the plain fact is that there could have been more than those ten Idle AC runners at that event.  When I first began entering races in the late 80’s as an unattached runner, I would diligently send off my forms well before the closing date, often weeks in advance, only to find queues of people entering on the day.  I would plan well ahead, and once even attempted to enter a fell race by post, which caused confusion and astonishment to the organisers.  I gradually became more relaxed, once entering the Sheffield Marathon on the day.  But in recent years this has become more difficult, and I have often been disappointed. Now we find that many races are oversubscribed even before the postal closing date.  Increasingly, postal and online entries from often unattached runners are leaving less organised or decisive club runners out in the cold.  It is quite possible that these unattached runners are setting themselves targets by entering well in advance, whereas club runners might not know what they are doing the next weekend.  So several people at the Club considered doing Ripon too late.  Even our own Idle Trail Race, like Ripon only in its second year, is attracting postal (and now online) entries more quickly than last year.  In 2005 we had 176 entries, including 60 on the day. Already this year we have 45 entries two months before the event.

Interestingly we won the women’s team prize at our event last year.  However we are increasingly going to miss out, as I think we did at Ripon, on team prizes, in the current entry climate.  It may seem like a pointless couple of cans of beer to top end runners, but for middle fielders it can be a pleasant surprise and a real boost to anchor home a successful team.  The girls especially have hit the jackpot all over the place, partly just by being there in sufficient numbers.  One which particularly pleased me was the Holmfirth 15, definitely a prestigious event.  It’s harder for the men in dense and highly competitive fields, but one to watch for is the Pudsey 10k, where the first three teams get prizes.  Now that’s on the 23rd of July, but already our friends at Pudsey Pacers are warning us to get our entries in early.

The way ahead then is through more communication and forward planning within the club about entering races.  I don’t advocate badgering members to enter races just for a potty little team prize, but I do suggest that we target a few and make sure to get plenty of entries in early.  That way we can not only avoid the disappointment of missing out when others get in, but also we’ll be in for a shout on a little return on our entry fees, and some positive publicity for the club.

It’s a somewhat individualist sport, but the team element adds an extra dimension to our efforts.  Traditional events like the Yorkshire Cross Country Championships have always required well planned pre entry and provide a fine stage for a club team effort.  The next one is on the first Saturday in January at Skipton.  It may seem a long way off, but I believe that both the men and the women should begin to prepare now.  This should be an effort for the whole club – we can enter as many as we want – not just a select few.  We are Yorkshire Club of the Year, so by both training together and competing together in numbers at all levels, we should continue to show the way.  We train on Tuesdays and Thursdays, with an easy run on Wednesdays.  Try it – you might like it!
