We hope that club members (all those not running the final Black Sheep race at Burton Leonard) will support Pudsey and enter their 10k challenge, especially as they will be supporting the Idle Trail Race. The course is scenic challenging mixed terrain offering something for everyone. All finishers get a T Shirt and there are team prizes (last year we received males and female team prizes). In addition there is a 2 mile family fun run at 10am and a Park Fun Run (approx 400meteres) for the under 8’s at 9.30am. Last year they reached their 400 race limit and are expected to do so again. Therefore get your entries in ASAP. Entry forms are available at the club or via Pudsey’s website: www.pudseypacers.com
Congratulations to Hepworth & Idle cricket Club who had great success in staging their fourth Idle Beer Festival. Most of Idle AC supported the event on Friday 23rd June and everyone seemed to have a great time.
This summer we will have 2 ‘away’ runs, one on a Thursday evening and one on a Sunday morning. The dates are as follows:
Thursday 29th June – Away run from Haworth. Penistone Hill Car park at 7pm for Chris’s Summer Special.
Sunday 9th July – Steve’s Magical Mystery Tour. Golden Acre Park, car park at 9.30am. 12 miles or so.
Please note that many races require that competitors carry waterproof clothing, map and compass for the competitor’s safety. Failure to comply with a race organiser's requirements will mean that you will be barred from taking part in the race. Competitors should arrive at races prepared to carry any or all of the following equipment: Windproof whole body cover, other body cover appropriate to the conditions, map and compass suitable for navigating the course, whistle, emergency food (long races). This equipment is mandatory at all Cat A Long and Medium races.
If this is the first time you have considered fell racing select a race distance well under the distance you normally run on the road.
If you retire during a race you MUST notify the officials at the finish.
If you like the idea of fell running and would like to have a go please speak to Chris.
All fell races are given a grade indicating length and difficulty. Difficulty is indicated by:
A, no less than 250 feet climb per mile, not more than 20% on roads, at least 1 mile in length (NASTY);
B, not less than 125 feet climb per mile, not more than 30% on roads (FAIRLY NASTY);
C, not less than 100 feet of climb per mile, not more than 40% on roads and contain genuine fell terrain (NOT VERY NASTY).
Length is indicated by: L, 12 miles or more; M, 6 miles and over but less than 12 miles; S, under 6 miles.

Following our success in hosting the 1st Idle Trail Race we are now organising the second race which we hope will be even bigger and better than last year. We received lots of very positive feedback about the event and this year we have a faster improved course. Entry forms are out now and entries are coming in thick n fast. Once again Crosstrax will be sponsoring the race along with Airedale.
We have formed a committee to oversee the main race organization, although we will be calling on many more club members to assist with jobs on that weekend and in particular on the day so please all try to be available (with family and friends!) to help.
The race committee are: Chris Smith, Davina Smith, Kay Gambles, Martin Burnside, Steve Little, Peter Vickers, Amy Wright and Alison Garlick (results).
Annual subs for 2006/7 are now due and it would be appreciated if all subs could be paid now, as we have now paid the cricket club and NoEAA fees. Please complete a membership form and give £15 (£7.50 concessions) to Davina ASAP. Many thanks.
If I told you me and Pete V had done a race on 6/5/06, both of us finishing in a time of 11.41 your reply would be on the lines of: “So what!”, or “where’s the twist!”. The 11.41 also had :18 on the end!
The Keswick to Barrow (K2B) was without doubt the hardest race we’ve done to date but at the same time the most enjoyable.
Having walked at no faster than 4mph we had all this time on our hands to do whatever came natural. The first game was “spot the thong!” this was at 5 mile, then it became apparent on every uphill climb - how can I put this?? - there were numerous duck noises chasing me up every hill. A hot air balloon would’ve been full had we had one.
Then dawn arrived - the daylight appeared in no time. It was picture time - the scenery was truly breathtaking. It went something like this, “Here a snap, there a snap, everywhere a snap snap.
Then it was spot the Barmy army guys, one of which gave us his full and I mean “full” life story, unfortunately 100% unprintable. He was on a walk/talk/run/talk strategy till his groin went then he basically just ran! He was a right character and passed a lot of time on just listening to him.
Then it was spot the smallest lamb time, there were tiny “bleaters” some only a few hours young.
With a mere 5 miles to go, there it was right on a far horizon 1 millimetre high at arms length, yes, you’ve guessed it, Blackpool Tower with Morecambe Bay and Grange-Over-Sands in the foreground.
We both miraculously avoided the magnetism of the various public houses en route (but couldn’t resist a free burger at the half way stage).
As we approached 38 mile the screaming and shouting which was coming from our leg vicinity’s slowed us to a measly 2mph making it a very memorable last 2 mile to the finish.
We came round the final bend and when 10 metres from the finish, we shook hands to which a lady in the crowd came out with “AWWWHH”. Her face, and no doubt ours said it all.
40 miles in 11.41.18

Following the women’s team success (3rd team, Jo, Lisa H, Davina & Laura) we hope to encourage everyone to run the Nottingham Marathon or Half Marathon on 10th September. Note we need 4 for a team so it would be good to get at least 4 men & 4 women in both races! We have a chance of trying for the prizes below:
Men's and Women's Full and Half Team Prizes (4 to score)
Starting and finishing at Victoria Embankment, the course runs past many of Nottingham's historical sites and scenic parks. The website says that there will be some improvements to the course for 2006, particularly to the early part of the race. They are currently working with the university on the new route and full details will be available shortly.
Last year this was a well organised event with loads of drinks stations (approx 12). All drink stations include water, but energy drinks are also available at mile 7.9 and 12.7 on the Half Marathon course, and there will be energy drinks and gels at miles 15, 16.3, 18, 19, 19.9, 22.6 and 25.4 for Full Marathon runners.
The cost of the race is £20.50 and there loads of category prizes in addition to the team prizes. See the website for details: www.robinhoodmarathon.co.uk
Entry forms are now available at the club (or you can enter online –same price), however the price goes up by £5 if you enter after 10/8/06 so get your entries in now.

We have been invited to this 4 x 4 mile relay for men’s, women’s or mixed teams, around the Swinsty and Fewston reservoirs above Otley. It’s promoted by Otley AC but the West Yorkshire Winter League have identified it as a summer event between the clubs. Therefore we can have a go for both open and Winter League positions.
It should be an interesting evening out – let us know if you are interested as it would be good to get as many teams of any standard out as possible – it’s only a fiver a team!
Washburn Valley Relay recce (with Otley AC) at 7.30pm on Tuesday 11th July 06. Meet at Yorkshire Water Swinsty Moor car park (start & finish of all the stages.
Those of you not running in the Burn Valley Half (Black Sheep Series) might like to consider the Carr Lane Challenge 5 (approx) on Saturday 1st July at 2pm. This is a scenic trail race which forms part of the Wrose Carnival. It should be a great local family day out. Its only £4 to enter (entry forms are available at the club). Alternatively if you don’t fancy running but are available to help out as a marshal let us know and we’ll pass on your details to the Wrose Carnival Committee.
Saturday 12th Aug offers a good family day out with the added attraction of not one, but two races. In past years we’ve had Idle AC vests in the 4 mile road race and in the fell race. This year’s races offer attendance points.
The 4 mile road race runs along beautiful quiet Yorkshire Dales country lanes and starts at 1.30pm. Entry forms are now available at the club. The fell race is run after the finish (3pm) of the road race so it’s possible to run both races.
For two Saturdays in a row (see above) we can offer entertainment for all the family with the second being the Burnsall Feast Sports on Saturday 19th August. The Sports opening starts at 1pm with the brass band parade, various village sports and side shows. The afternoon offers an undulating 10mile road race at 2.30pm and the famous Burnsall Classic Fell race. (AS 1.5 miles/900’) at 5pm. Entry forms available at the club or visit the website: www.burnsallsports.co.uk
Baildon Runners are organising a fell race to be held in conjunction with Baildon Carnival. This is on Saturday, 8 July at 2:00pm at Baildon Rugby & Cricket Sports Club, off Jenny Lane, Baildon. The race is a 5K starting at the Sports Club and basically going to the Baildon Moor trig point and back. The race will be well marked and marshalled. Entries will only be taken on the day at £3. Prizes are in the usual age categories. If this takes off we hope it will be an annual event.
Your club members are cordially invited to take part. Perhaps you could kindly pass the word round.
