The Idle Trail Race – Sunday 16th July 2006

With 260 entrants, a scenic course, generous sponsors (Crosstrax & Airedale), great facilities and the whole club behind the event, the 2nd Idle Trail race proved to be an amazing success, even better than 2005!

We had listened to last year’s feedback and improved on the course and this year we received a lot of amazing comments about how much everyone had enjoyed it. In addition Ian won the race and Donna was first woman. The women’s team of Donna, Hayley & Amnuay were 1st team. Pudsey & Bramley were first men’s team.

Here is a tiny snap shot of the feedback There were 3 pages!

·       Beautiful course [lovely to get off the roads on a day such as that], very well organised and extremely impressed with your hard work on the day and the speed with which the results and photos were produced.

·       Having the water half way; and plenty of it, showers/changing available at the end, excellent and encouraging marshals, clearly marked mile markers, neat memento, ice pops and water upon finishing, were first rate. To top it all off was how warm and friendly you who were organizing it were to us.

It was great being able to pass on such great comments to the club as it made the months of work truly worth it. However for me personally it was the comments of Ron Hill MBE that made the event really special, as I imagine that Ron will have run thousands of races all over the world!

“….Well organised and runner friendly. I would recommend to my friends. I think races such as yours are the future for club runners with the roads becoming so difficult to run on….”

Thanks to everyone for making it a brilliant success. It was a real team effort. However next year it will be even better!!! - Davina

Subs are now (over) due.

Annual subs for 2006/7 are now due and it would be appreciated if all subs could be paid now, as we have now paid the cricket club and NoEAA fees. Please complete a membership form and give £15 (£7.50 concessions) to Davina ASAP. Many thanks.

Robin Hood Marathon, Nottingham 10/9/06

Following the women’s team success (3rd team, Jo, Lisa H, Davina & Laura) we hope to encourage everyone to run the Nottingham Marathon or Half Marathon on 10th September. Note we need 4 for a team so it would be good to get at least 4 men & 4 women in both races! We have a chance of trying for the prizes below:

Men's and Women's Full and Half Team Prizes (4 to score)

Starting and finishing at Victoria Embankment, the course runs past many of Nottingham's historical sites and scenic parks. The website says that there will be some improvements to the course for 2006, particularly to the early part of the race. They are currently working with the university on the new route and full details will be available shortly.

Last year this was a well organised event with loads of drinks stations (approx 12). All drink stations include water, but energy drinks are also available at mile 7.9 and 12.7 on the Half Marathon course, and there will be energy drinks and gels at miles 15, 16.3, 18, 19, 19.9, 22.6 and 25.4 for Full Marathon runners.

The cost of the race is £20.50 and there loads of category prizes in addition to the team prizes. See the website for details: www.robinhoodmarathon.co.uk . Entry forms are now available at the club (or you can enter online –same price), however the price goes up by £5 if you enter after 10/8/06 so get your entries in now.

New Members

This month we welcome two new member and two ‘old’ members who have rejoined.  Getting the honour of being our 100th member is Philip Twigg. Philip has been introduced to Idle AC by Alison whom he works with. He ran the first Idle Trail race last year and ran this year’s event. Philip is a keen tennis player who lives at Otley.

Our 2nd new member is Tony Wimbush. Tony is a keen off road runner who has run (and written about) all distances on the fells/off road. For Tony running is a way of life and it’s great that he has joined us.

Our returning members are Clare Sweeney and David Nicholson. Clare has been busy doing her final accountancy exams but having recently qualified is keen to get back to some running.

David has recently moved nearer to the club so now has no excuses for missing club nights. David originally joined us as a second claim member as he was a member of another club, but he now joins us first claim (you can get the walshes out of the box for the cross country season David).

There are a few people who have been training with the club recently who are also likely to join, plus there is great potential in the members of the 6 week Beginners Group.

Bingley Show Trail Race: Sun 13th Aug 06.

Those wanting a local family day out on 13th August might consider a visit to the Bingley Show in Myrtle Park. In addition to the show’s agricultural and family attractions there will be a 3 mile (approx) trail race on public footpaths around Bingley and St. Ives. The race has been organised by Bingley Harriers and is £6 to enter, although that includes a free t –shirt and free entry to the show (worth £6) to all who enter before July. Entry forms are available at the club or details can be obtained via Bingley’s website: www.bingleyharriers.org.uk

Arncliffe Gala, Sat 12th August. A grand day out!

Saturday 12th Aug offers a good family day out with the added attraction of not one, but two races. In past years we’ve had Idle AC vests in the 4 mile road race and in the fell race. This year’s races offer attendance points.

The 4 mile road race runs along beautiful quiet Yorkshire Dales country lanes and starts at 1.30pm.  Entry forms are now available at the club.  The fell race is run after the finish (3pm) of the road race so it’s possible to run both races.

Burnsall Feast Sports, Sat 19th August. Another grand day out!

For two Saturdays in a row (see above) we can offer entertainment for all the family with the second being the Burnsall Feast Sports on Saturday 19th August. The Sports opening starts at 1pm with the brass band parade, various village sports and side shows. The afternoon offers an undulating 10mile road race at 2.30pm and the famous Burnsall Classic Fell race. (AS 1.5 miles/900’) at 5pm.  Entry forms available at the club or visit the website: www.burnsallsports.co.uk

The Bunnies are back…..

Dave & Eileen Woodhead are putting on a 'trial' Bunny Run on Tuesday 22nd August, at Penistone Hill Country Park, nr Haworth. Starts at 7:30pm. Registration & prize giving are at the Sun Hotel, Haworth. Cost is £2.

London Marathon 2007: Sun 22nd April 07.

If you’d like to run the London Marathon in 2007 you will need to enter using the official entry form that is within the official event magazine called Marathon News. This will be available in all good sports shops in August. Closing date for entries is 20th October 2006. The cost is £26 for club runners.

If you have applied to run or have run the event in the last five years a copy of Marathon News will be sent to you automatically.
Check out the London Marathon Website for details:
www.london-marathon.co.uk

Successful and unsuccessful applicants will receive a reply in early December 06.  Anyone who is unsuccessful in their entry will be eligible for the draw for the club entry, which normally takes place at the Christmas Do.  Idle AC will have at least 2 club entries.

In addition members gain an automatic place under the ‘good for your age’ system. If within 205 or 2006 you have run between 2.45 and 3.00 (men aged 18-40) or sub 3.15 (men aged 41-59), you qualify automatically, and must fill in a different form. Women aged 18-49 need to have run between 3.15and 3.45 to qualify automatically. If you are a woman aged 50-54 the qualifying time is sub 4 hours. For those of you who have achieved these standards you need to write in giving details and proof of the qualifying marathon performance (i.e. copy of results and proof of your age) by Friday 6th October 06.

Christmas Do 2006

Although it seems a long time away please keep the evening of Friday 8th December free as we have booked a room at Idle Working Men’s Club for our Christmas Do. As with other years it will be a buffet and disco and (huge!!!) raffle. In addition there’s usually a group who think it’s a great idea to go for a night club and/or curry afterwards. However it’s always a good night out!!

From The Coach…

We tried to sell the idea of the Pudsey 10k 400 metre Fun Run to Joe and Katie (aged 2 ¾ ), knowing that Ali’s 3 year old, Thomas, had completed it the year before.  Joe picked up on it so much that we pre-entered him.  Katie failed to commit herself.  We asked Joe what he was doing on Sunday.  He answered “Running!” without hesitation.  We asked Katie if she wanted to run on Sunday, like Joe.  “No!” she answered resolutely.  The night before the race, at Lisa’s Garden Party, Joe seemed a little quiet and reflective, but drank a lot of ribena and ate 2 whole chapattis with salad and mint yoghurt, followed by 3 home made iced buns.  Katie gave her bun to a passing snail, and showed her pink handbag to anyone who would take an interest.

We knew that Joe had been training.  They’d had to practise for the nursery sports day and he’d told us.  Katie made no mention of this.

On the morning of the race, Joe ate his Weetabix in silence, and watched his mummy pin on her number.  Katie was as preoccupied as ever with her own personal agenda, which generally consists of trying to get as much adult attention as possible.

Once at Pudsey, we met Ali G from the host club.  Joe informed her that he was running, but Katie had little time for her.  Whilst Joe held my hand, and then his Nan’s too when she came, and pulled us towards the start, Katie veered off into the children’s playground, pursued by her granddad.  She shot across the tarmac, with natural high knee lift, and an arm action with cross rotational technique of which any Alexandrian coaching practitioner would have been proud.  Yet at the entry desk she had once again been insistent that she didn’t want to enter.  Joe had waited patiently whilst I screwed up his number and then straightened it again so it didn’t flap so much, and whilst I pinned it to his top.

Joe took my hand again as he watched Alison’s Thomas and his dad.  We made our way to the back of the field, whilst Davina, who had got Katie a number just in case, tried to coax her to the start.  She agreed to stand with her mummy, but wouldn’t wear the number.

Joe was scared so much by the air horn that he jumped visibly, but he gripped my hand and set off.  Of course we were left behind by most of the field.  “You’re holding him back!” shouted Shaun from Pudsey Pacers, as we headed downhill.  But Joe clung on to my hand and we kept going.  Marshals clapped and cheered as we neared the final hill.  “Come on Joe, I can see the finish. Nan and Grandad will be waiting for you,” I encouraged him, wanting him to outsprint the little girl and her mum who were alongside us.  “Oh I hate it, I always get a sprint finish!” I said to the mum.  But at that moment Joe looked back.  He pulled back on my finger.  He was looking for his sister.  Davina had picked her up and was carrying her round the final bend.  Once Katie was running again Joe turned round and carried on.  I tried to get him to let go of me so he could cross the finish line on his own in triumph, but he just looked at me and clung resolutely to my finger.  We crossed the line together, and enjoyed the moment.  Unimpressed, Katie shot through the finish and went to get her free banana.  Somehow Davina had attached her number during the race, but it didn’t stay on long.  I put Joe’s medal round his neck, and tied a knot in the ribbon so that it hung on his chest, and he refused to remove either that or his number for the rest of the day.  Katie grabbed a free lollipop, and then another, and forgot about the whole thing.

So is it nature or nurture?  I suspect that however hard we try to nurture, sometimes we are just whistling in the wind.

-Chris.
