Please
note that many races require that competitors carry waterproof clothing, map and
compass for the competitor’s safety. Failure to comply with a race organiser's
requirements will mean that you will be barred from taking part in the race. Competitors
should arrive at races prepared to carry any or all of the following equipment:
Windproof whole body cover, other body cover appropriate to the conditions, map
and compass suitable for navigating the course, whistle, emergency food (long
races). This equipment is mandatory at all Cat A Long and Medium races.
If this
is the first time you have considered fell racing select a race distance well
under the distance you normally run on the road.
If you
retire during a race you MUST notify the officials at the finish.
If
you like the idea of fell running and would like to have a go please speak to
Chris.
All fell

indicated by:
A, no less than 250 feet climb per
mile, not more than 20% on roads, at least 1 mile in length (NASTY);
B, not less than 125 feet climb
per mile, not more than 30% on roads (FAIRLY NASTY);
C, not less than 100 feet of climb
per mile, not more than 40% on roads and contain genuine fell terrain (NOT VERY

be available on our website once 2007 FRA Fixture list is available.
A fine but very
windy day saw the second race of the 2006/7 WYWL season at Temple Newsam on 3rd
December. We again had over 200
runners, including 76 women line up amongst the field of runners from the 8
clubs. This included 29 runners from Idle AC. The new course was billed as being 5 miles but Gary clocked
it at 5.8 on his GPS. The course seemed to suit most of us as it was a very
varied, mixed terrain course.
Ian Fisher won his second race in
a row, and once again there were strong runs from a few of male team,
especially from Chris Stubbs, Simon Bellwood & from Adrian. The women’s
team saw strong performances from Haley, Jo, & Amnuay.
Once again newcomers to cross country
showed great promise with Julie & Hannah both having strong runs. Kay won
one of the fancy dress prizes for her ‘Santa’s Little Helper’ outfit (not Robin
Hood as some thought!!!) and Dave Lewis also got a prize for his Afro
hairstyle. The results are as
follows:

Details of course to be confirmed.
4. Jan 28th Baildon

5. Feb 18th St.Bede’s

the Baildon event (1pm start) all races will start at 11am. Full details
will be circulated to club members prior to each event.
Whilst the League does offer
individual trophy positions, its primary objective is team competition. The five team scores
are added together to decide the following team trophies:
1st Combined Team, 2nd Combined Team, 3rd
Combined Team.
1st Male Team.
1st Female team.
1st Vets Team (combination of male/females).
A club team is the first seven men to cross the line (which must include 2 vets), and the first three women (including 1 vet), in each event.
The vets’ team is the 2 male and
the one female counting vets added together.
Different runners may score in
different races - it’s just first past the post on the day.
The first Combined Team can enter
the National Cross Country Final and the 2nd Combined Team can enter
the Plate Race at the National Final which will take place at Nottingham in
March 07. Further details will be
circulated prior to each event.
Any questions please speak to Chris as he is not only Secretary of the WYWL but he is the only runner to have run all 70 consecutive races in the past 14 years (Davina has slacked and has only run 68!).
We drew 2 names from the 6 rejections in the London Marathon draw at the
Christmas party. The lucky
winners are Tim Whitcombe & Hannah Peacock. Tim & Hannah join Dave
Currie, Adrian, Jo, Simon Bellwood, Lisa Flesher & Gary Naylor on the start
line. Good luck to all who are running.
We have received an invite to
join Otley AC to a presentation by Jason Dean of Better Body Personal Training,
on Thursday 11th Jan at 8.45pm. Jason Dean is a qualified sports
masseur, nutritional consultant and sports therapist. He will be giving a
presentation for 30-45 mins about “human bio-mechanics and the effects of poor
posture on pain performance – with particular relevance to training”.
This all takes place at Otley AC’s base, Otley RUFC, Pool Road, Otley (approx
half a mile from town centre travelling east on the A659). Otley have invited us to join then for
a run beforehand at 7.15pm. They are also providing a buffet and bar facilities.
They are limited to 90 people in total so they need to know advance numbers. Please
let Chris know by Tues 2nd Jan if you want to take up this invite and Chris will let Otley have the
numbers.
December is a busy
month for us all, with the second cross country fixture on the 3rd
at Temple Newsam, the Christmas Do on the 8th, and the Sewage works
Surprise club Handicap Race on the 17th. As Christmas Day falls on a Monday, and a lot of the club
are likely to run the Chevin Chase race, there will be no training night on
Tuesday 26th December. All other training days around the Christmas
& New Year holiday weeks will remain as normal. We will have our usual
‘Christmas Lights’ run on Thursday 21st Dec (20th for the
Wednesday group) when we hope to find a selection of decorated houses which
show festive spirit. Afterwards there will be mince pies. Hopefully we should
have a good turn out for the Chevin Chase 7 mile race on Boxing Day at 11am.
For those wanting a run on New Years Eve you could run the Auld Lang Syne Fell
race!! This is a ‘B’ Medium fell race which starts from Penistone Hill Country
Park at Haworth at 11.30 am. The race is 6 miles with 900’ of climbing (speak
to Chris if you want to know more details about the course) it’s only £3 to
enter (on the day only) and all finishers receive a bottle of Briscoe’s Brewery
‘Auld Lang Syne’ beer. All prizes are beers, ales, ciders etc. There is also
the Jolly Holly Jog 10k from Ripon which I can highly recommend, though it
fills early.
Enjoy the Christmas lights as you
run this December.
Once again we have
seen the club grow in strength and in achievements, the highlight being named
as Yorkshire Club of the Year!!. However we hope that 2007 will be even better!
Thanks to all the members we really have
achieved a great deal during 2006.
Merry Christmas and a happy new
year.
January- We had 34 runners for the third WYWL event at Bramley Fall woods.
Ian Fisher won the race, and the men’s team packed well to push back
Stainland. Donna Edmondson-Booker claimed third for the women, with Hayley
tenth. We had 15 runners at the Brass Monkey Half marathon at York on Sunday
22nd January 06. Ian won the race and set a new course
record with his time of 1.06.09. Simon Bellwood set a new M45 club
record with his PB time of 1.22.48, whilst Laura Brook smashed the F45
record with her time of 1.41.39. There were also pb's for Simon Blackburn
and Alison Garlick. Many others were close to their PB times. Jan ended with the 4th
WYWL event at Baildon which saw 29 runners from
Idle AC. Ian won the race, Donna
Edmondson-Booker claimed third for the women, while Hayley was 7th. January saw the
start of marathon training for a few of us who had secured places at London,
especially for Adrian who was keen to run lots of 20milers!
February- 29 runners for the final WYWL
event at Stainland and 5 consecutive wins for Ian. Donna finished as 3rd
woman and Simon Bellwood was 3rd M40. Chris Smith finished the cross
country season with his 70th consecutive WYWL race and said he may
retire when he gets to 100 races! In the Liversedge Half Jo, Lisa Hall &
Laura won the women’s team trophy and Laura was 2nd F45. 5 runners
at the Dewsbury 10k including Martin who ran a PB & wife Janet who was
close to her PB. A PB for Gary at the Snake Lane 10, with good run for the off
roaders – Chris Stubbs,Phill, Warren, Tony
& Simon Blackburn at the Ilkley Fell Race.
March- As we celebrated our fourth year
since the formation of Idle AC (formed 22nd March 2002) we welcomed the
highlight of the club’s history to date when we were named as Yorkshire Club
of the Year (Off track) by UK Athletics. The achievement was in recognition that though Idle AC was still only
four years old, our members are committed to the club ethos of progress through
training, and a belief in what a small club is able to achieve through team
work. Our
success had been such that other clubs had contacted us to look at our
approaches and methods. The club
remains widely recognized as a great success across the North of England and
beyond. In addition to the recognition we received a £500 cheque!! That same
month we celebrated our 4th birthday since the club
was formed on 22nd March 02. In celebration of the two events above
we had trumpets and fireworks on our website. Despite the celebrations we all
continued to train & race & 8 of us
braved the blizzard conditions at the Spen 20.There was an M45 club record for Simon Bellwood, Female club
record & 3rd in Yorks Champs for Jo, an F45 club record for Laura and
pb’s for Adrian & Stephen Edwards. We all looked
like snowmen at the end but the freezing conditions were worthwhile as we
watched Jo collect the first Yorkshire Medal for Idle AC. Chris Smith was 4th in the Trollers Trot 25
mile race. Donna was 3rd woman
and set a new 5 mile record at the South Leeds Stadium 5 mile race. Laura
finished off the month with an F45 club record at the Trimpel 20 at Morecambe.
April- Jo, Laura & Davina all had a
great weekend in London, representing Idle in the London marathon along with
Adrian & Stephen Edwards. Jo
got a female club record with her brilliant 3.21 time. All Adrian’s hard work
paid off as he achieved a PB with 3.22. There were also club records for Laura
(F45) & Davina (F40). Hayley set a new 1.32 female club record when she ran
the Ackworth half. On the same day 11 of us ran the Baildon Boundary Way, in
extremely muddy conditions, which slowed most of us down, although Chris Stubbs
still managed to finish 14th. Hayley’s winter distance training seemed to be
paying off as she clocked a further female club record at Wakefield, a race
that also got PB’s for Wilma & Andy. Richard Lyons ran the Guiseley Gallop 10k with the hangover
from hell & Laura finished off the month with an F45 record at Rothwell,
where Ali G ran an impressive 48 min 10k to achieve a PB time.
May- A very busy month with lots of the club racing. Phil led home a field of 7 Idle runners at the Hare &
Hounds Fell Race. We, once again, had strong turn out for the John Carr 5k
series. The series saw club records from Lisa Flesher F35, Dave Lewis M45 and Ana
who set an F50 record. In addition we had a string of pb’s which included
Claire McConnell, Wilma, Amy & Carmel. May saw the start of the ever
popular Black Sheep Series with the Ripon 10 where there were club records for
Lisa Flesher & Simon Bellwood. The race was also popular with Richard Lyons
who got a pb with his first ever sub 70 min race. 7 of us formed a team named
Idle Runners to run the Keswick to Barrow 40 mile race, in its 40th
anniversary year. It was an amazing event in which Chris Smith ran 5.44 &
Kay, Davina (who also was celebrating her 40th anniversary year!),
Steve & Martin ran 7.41. The two Petes walked the race & had a great
time. The team raised over £500 for charity. Dave Lewis ran a PB in the Leeds
Half – his first time at sub 90 mins & Phil Rough (as it said in the
results!!!) ran the Jack Bloor fell race with team mates Warren (Flecker) &
Tony. Chris Stubbs finished the month with his M40 (36 min) 10k club record at
Melmerby.
June- Donna & Hayley were 1st & 2nd females at the
Apperley Bridge Canter; on the same day Simon Bellwood set a new M45 club
record at the Bronte 5. Lisa Hall was 2nd Female (FO) at the West
Yorks Fire Service 5 and she ran a sub 60min pb at the Roberttown 7 mile road
race. Jane Lewis got a PB with her sub 2.30 at the Humber Bridge Half &
Pete Helliwell continued to support the Yorks Vets Races. Pete Vickers &
Michael ran the tough Wharfedale off road Half Marathon. Simon Blackburn led
home the fell crew at the Chevin Fell Race. A good time was had by all of us at
the Idle Beer Festival, another brilliant success for Hepworth & Idle
Cricket Club. Amnuay was 1st F35 at the Rainton 10k & finished
first F35 in the Blacksheep Series. We ended the month with a lovely evening away
run on Penistone Hill at Haworth.
July- Ian won the Carr Lane race & Donna was first woman. A group of us joined Steve on his Magical Mystery Tour away run around
Golden Acre Park. We had a lovely 12 mile run followed by tea & cakes in
the café!! Our women’s team picked up the team prize at the Thorpe Edge 10k. Kay
finished as 1st F45 in the Black Sheep Series. We had a wonderful
evening run at the Washburn Valley Relay in which we put three teams: Idle
Giffers, Idle Girls & Idle Mix. It was a stunning run on a lovely evening.
We welcomed Philip Twigg as our 100th Member. We had a good turn out
for the Pudsey 10k and four future members – Tom, Alice, Joe & Katie
all ran the 400m fun run. However the highlight of July was the hosting of the 2nd
Idle Trail Race. With over 260 entrants, a
scenic course, generous sponsors, great facilities and the whole club behind
the event, the 2nd Idle Trail race proved to be an amazing success.
We received over three pages worth of really positive feedback from the event. Ron
Hill MBE, came and ran the race and said:
“….Well organised and runner friendly. I
would recommend to my friends. I think races such as yours are the future for
club runners with the roads becoming so difficult to run on….”
In
addition Ian won the race, Donna was 1st female, Hayley was third
and backed up with Amnuay the women picked up the team prize.
Aug- A quieter month for races but still busy at the club, especially as in
addition to the usual Tues, Wed, & Thurs club nights we also ran a really
successful 6 week Beginners Course. We had runners at many local races, including Harrogate 10k
& various fell races. The return of the Bunny run at its new venue at
Haworth proved to be a big hit with the club. Chris Smith & Lisa Flesher
went to Wales to race the train and lots of us took families for an afternoon
out at Spofforth for the 10k. We congratulated Richard Lyons as he
started his new career in nursing having secured his first job since qualifying
with a First class Honours degree.
September- September saw
two marathons on the same day – Nottingham & the Yorkshireman. Chris
Stubbs WON the Yorkshireman Marathon – a real achievement for him and
great for the whole club. At
Nottingham Half – Suzanne, Julie, Judith, Pete
Hilliard & Stephen all had good runs. Whilst in the full Jo, Laura, Davina
and Ana once again finished as 3rd place women’s team for the second
year running. Davina & Ana also got F40/F50 club records. Lisa Hall showed
her liking for scenic hilly marathons when she ran the Moray Marathon in
Scotland. Whilst closer to home Adrian led a group of 5 Idle runners at the
Sandal Castle 10k near Wakefield.
Richard Lyons ran a 1.31 pb at the Selby Half
marathon – a fine way to celebrate his birthday. We gained a new Level II
coach in Pete Vickers.
October- New member Tim Whitcombe joined
the 8 runners who ran the Horsforth 10k. Chris & Lisa ran a 15 mile fell
race. Andy took an amazing 40mins off his half marathon time at the Great North
Run, proving that Tuesday’s coached sessions do pay off!! Kay, Steve & Gary
enjoyed the delights of the Scarborough 10 mile trail race. Jane told us how wonderful it is to be
a runner when she described one of her scenic Sunday morning jaunts. Jane and
Dave had a quick trip to Amsterdam for the Half/10k. Trevor set a new M50 club
record at Brid and Nick got a sub 1.50 pb despite only a few weeks training
with the club (think what could be achieved in a few months!). We had runners
at the Complete Runner cross Country as a warm up for the start of the West
Yorkshire Winter League). Davina was proud to collect the Club of the Year (off
Track) award from the Institute of Sport in Sheffield. Lisa Flesher and Ana
finished off the month by setting F35/F50 club records at the hilly Holmfirth
15.
November- Simon Blackburn
got a pb and led home a strong group at the Guy Fawkes 10, which also included
pbs from Nick, Martin & David Nicholson. The start of the 2006/7 WYWL cross country season with our
hosting an event in Buck woods at Thackley for 230 runners – the biggest
ever WYWL event. This included
34 runners from Idle AC. The new
course of approx 4.5 miles proved to be popular with most of the field. We
received a lot of very positive feedback for all aspects of the event but
especially for the encouragement that our marshals gave to all runners.
Ian Fisher won the race, and there were strong runs from a few of
male team, especially from Adrian. The women’s team saw strong performances
from Jo, Amnuay & from Claire Sweeney. Newcomers to the club showed great
promise too, with Andy, Nick, Philip & Julie all having creditable
runs. At the Abbey Dash Donna set
a new female club record with her 40.17 PB. There were also pb’s from Phil (who wanted a lot more mud and
hills) and from Carmel & Wilma
December-
This
month saw the second WYWL fixture at Temple Newsam. We again had over 200 runners, including 76 women line up amongst the
field of runners from the 8 clubs. This included 29 runners from Idle AC. Ian won his second race in a row, and
once again there were strong runs from a few of male team, especially from
Chris Stubbs, Simon Bellwood & from Adrian. The women’s team saw strong
performances from Haley, Jo, & Amnuay. Kay won one of the fancy dress prizes
for her ‘Santa’s Little Helper’ outfit and Dave Lewis also got a prize for his
Afro hairstyle. Thanks to Pete
Helliwell there were a number of reindeers out on the course.
Overall 2006 has been a really successful year,
not least with being named as Yorkshire Club of the Year (Off Track) by UK
Athletics but also the success in hosting our 2nd Idle Trail Race
and a new cross country fixture for the WYWL calendar. 2006 has seen our
membership continue to increase and training nights regularly seeing 20 members
at a time. We again showed that we can provide strong team and individual
performances in road, cross country and in fell and trail races alike. Once
again it’s not just been all about running –we’ve had a couple of great
social events, not least the Christmas party.
We now look forward to 2007 when we hope to
build on our success of our Trail Race and hopefully reach our 300 limit in
only our third year.
The NoEAA awards ceremony said that we were
a club with a bright future ahead of us. Thanks to everyone for making 2006 our
best year yet!!
You did all your friends and family a favour when you took up running. Quite apart from the fact that you beggar off and leave them in peace on a regular basis, you also instantly became easier to buy presents for.
It takes real consideration and empathy to buy someone a present they really want – even if you know them really well. And early January is cluttered with people returning unwanted gifts, or worse still sticking them on Ebay, after bold attempts at present buying have misfired. It still takes some thought of course to buy a runner something, but he or she has taken up an activity which is not only a hobby, but which becomes a defining element in that person’s life, and thus makes them more defined characters to the people around them. Perhaps it even makes them easier to know and understand.
Rhea, who has just joined us, did so “blind” – she sent us a form having looked around the website. So I got straight on the phone when I received her application, to make sure she had made the right decision. I was soon reassured – she talked like a runner. One thing she said was “I want to meet some people who don’t think I’m crazy – all my friends do!”
Our non-running friends think we are crazy because our preferred
activities and outlook on life have fundamentally changed – we have not
simply started going to a dance class on Wednesdays if it’s not raining, or
started building Napoleonic warships with matches. And, of course, because we achieve what appear to them to be
astonishing feats of physical endurance and willpower.
Not only have you become easier to buy presents for, but you have
become more interesting. No-one
who knows you will ever be short of a conversation opener. Non-running acquaintances, all of whom
obviously think I am crazy, will often ask me “been on any runs lately?” Or
more simply, “What you been up to lately then?” They can know with confidence
that I have been somewhere and done something, and am therefore easier to talk
to. Think of those empty silences with people who do not have a fundamental
element to their lives beyond the boring necessities.
And what would my answer to the activities question be
today? Well six hardy souls met on
Wrose Road for the first Saturday afternoon session (Since we have the ‘Balti
Crew’ on Sunday mornings, then now we have the ‘Vindaloo Crew’ on occasional
Saturdays!) Soon we were slopping through seasonal mud on the way to a short
hill session on Bolton Woods Quarry stack, that grassy volcano off Stanley
Road. It’s like a fell up there,
with wind, grass and rocks, but with a panoramic view of urban Bradford. What made the group’s jaws really drop
though was that massive hole in the middle, invisible from anywhere but the
top, which is Bolton Woods Quarry.
We could have been Christmas shopping, like the hordes below us,
and I guess we could have talked about it afterwards, but we all had far better
things to do, for our Christmases, like all the other parts of our lives, are
tempered by the fact that we are runners.
-Chris.
