2007 Club race.

This year we have picked a ‘fell’ race as our 2007 club race. This is no ordinary fell race – it’s a runnable trail type course that is accessible to ALL, regardless of your running abilities. Even me (this is Davina… I don’t do mud, slippy bits, etc !, speaking).

Which Race: BUNNY RUN (1).

When: Tues 3rd April at 7.30pm.

Where: Penistone Hill, Haworth, (up from Sun Inn at top of  Haworth).

Course: Approx 3 mile on runnable tracks, with only 1 real descent/ascent (but I could still run it).

Why: To get the WHOLE club to a local event that has a great atmosphere.

Afterwards: You get CHOCOLATE for running!!!! All Prizes are EASTER EGGS!! It would be good to have everyone come into the Sun pub for a drink afterwards – it’s packed but wonderful.

Please make a note of the date and let’s make it our best club race ever.

Fell Races: Jan 07 to end March 07.

Please note that many races require that competitors carry waterproof clothing, map and compass for the competitor’s safety. Failure to comply with a race organiser's requirements will mean that you will be barred from taking part in the race. Competitors should arrive at races prepared to carry any or all of the following equipment: Windproof whole body cover, other body cover appropriate to the conditions, map and compass suitable for navigating the course, whistle, emergency food (long races). This equipment is mandatory at all Cat A Long and Medium races.

If this is the first time you have considered fell racing select a race distance well under the distance you normally run on the road.

If you retire during a race you MUST notify the officials at the finish.

If you like the idea of fell running and would like to have a go please speak to Chris.

All fell races are given a grade indicating length and difficulty. Difficulty is indicated by:

A, no less than 250 feet climb per mile, not more than 20% on roads, at least 1 mile in length (NASTY);

B, not less than 125 feet climb per mile, not more than 30% on roads (FAIRLY NASTY);

C, not less than 100 feet of climb per mile, not more than 40% on roads and contain genuine fell terrain (NOT VERY NASTY).

Length is indicated by: L, 12 miles or more; M, 6 miles and over but less than 12 miles; S, under 6 miles.

GB Call up for Ian at Mumbai.

This month I interviewed Ian Fisher prior to him jetting off to Mumbai in India to run for Great Britain.

DS: Congratulations on winning your 3rd successive race in the WYWL. How do you feel after the event?

IF: I feel better now than I did after the Yorkshire XC race the day before. I haven't done a high quality XC in a good while. I was pleased with my run in the WYWL and with Idle improving overall in the team positions.

DS: Its great news that you’ve been selected to run for Great Britain in another International Marathon, the Mumbai Marathon in India. When do you travel?

IF: I'm setting off to Mumbai on Thursday 18th January. The race is on the 21st and I will be back the following Tuesday (23rd).

DS: I’m aware you’ve run previously for Great Britain, mainly within the Greatest Race on Earth Series (GROE). Which marathons have you run?

IF: I’ve run for GB in 3 marathons so far. I have done Mumbai in January 2005, Nairobi in October 2005 &. Slovakia in October 2006 which wasn't part of the GROE series.

DS: What marathon training have you been doing in the lead up to Mumbai?

IF: Preparation wise, I have been wearing padded ski jackets and waterproofs which don't allow perspiration. I have been doing 10hr and two weeks worth of training since last November. It's been tough mentally to get out & to do it on my own. But once out, it's been okay.

DS: What terrain have you been training on?

IF: Most of my training has been off road to protect my joints and to stop going fast as I tend to do on the roads. I have been able to finish work early and do 40-60 minutes around the football fields or travel over to Heaton Woods for resistance training on the muddy hills.

DS: Have you followed a specific diet during this period?

IF: My diet has been the same as usual. As for food. I’m going to go for a Bradford curry a few days before I fly over. Got to be done I'm afraid.

DS: You mentioned that you have been training in padded jackets & waterproofs which don’t allow perspiration. Do you have any problems with overheating when training?

IF: I don't have a problem with over heating in training, but I still take plenty of fluids on board.

DS: As you know we have a number of Idle AC members running in the London Marathon and/or other Spring Marathons. What training tips can you give them?

IF: As a tip for the likes of Adrian and Hannah doing London, plus any others aiming for a marathon - I just go out and aim at being out 45min - 1hr - 90mins - 2hr up to 3hrs rather than counting the miles. Through my experience I can switch off while am out training. I’m just thinking of a location a few miles ahead. When I'm at that location I go through the same process again. I also think about my target time and believe I can do it.

DS: I expect Mumbai will be pretty tough?

IF: For Mumbai I'm just going to give it a good go. Running in 78% humidity and temperatures rising to 30% will make it tough.

DS: Obviously we all wish you are best wishes whilst you run Mumbai and we’d really appreciate a bit of a report when you get back.

IF: Thanks, I will report on the race when I get back.

DS: Thanks to Ian for the above details & good luck to him at Mumbai. I spoke to Ian again on Tuesday 9th Jan after our Tuesday night (Claremont) session and asked about his plans in the days following the marathon. He will be travelling back within two days of running the race & is likely to suffer with the jetlag etc and the general fatigue suffered after a marathon. However Ian will be running in the Regional Cross Country Championships on Saturday 27th Jan and will be back with us for the 4th WYWL at Baildon on Sunday 28th.  I asked him how he’ll cope with this gruelling schedule.

IF: It will be ok as I’ll totally rest in between coming back from Mumbai & running the Regional Cross Country Champs on the Saturday.

DS: What more was there to say!!!!  - Davina.

Race entry forms.

Just a reminder that although we have race entry forms at the club (race entries folder) a quick way of getting entry forms (and results) is via the UK Results site. This is an excellent site run by John Schofield which contains loads of useful running stuff. The website address is: www.ukresults.net. Alternatively follow the links from our website: Go into events and results page, current events, click on the ‘full uk results service’ at the bottom of the page. See our race details on this site.

Montrail Ultra Running Championships 2007

I would just like to let everyone know that the races in this year’s Montrail Ultrarunning championships have been announced!

To compete you have to do 4 of the 12 races including one in each distance category, or all 4 races at one distance if you prefer.  Last year I did Osmotherly Phoenix with a man I befriended at the ten mile check point and then the absolutely fantastic High Peak 40 with Jo and David N.

The series is a great way of introducing yourself to a whole new world.  All the races are off road.  My favourite bit was having a cup of tea every few miles.  David and Jo’s favourite bit was getting a sew-on badge.  It is free to register and if you complete just one race you might win a spot prize (I won a £30 voucher).- Lisa Hall

You can register and get all the other details at www.runfurther.com

Congratulations!

Congratulations to Alison, Paul & Tom Garlick as they will have a new baby next June. Alison is in good health & hopes to gentle continue running during her pregnancy.

5th Annual Sewage Works Surprise Club Handicap Race: Sunday 17th December.

As members may be aware December 02 saw the start of a tradition for Idle AC – the annual Sewage Works Surprise club handicap race! The race was run as a 3.75 mile Handicap race from the Stansfield Arms Pub at Apperley Bridge. This year lots of us donned our fancy dress outfits which definitely added great atmosphere and entertained the passing spectators and motorists!! This year the race was won by Hannah Peacock with last year’s winner, Jane Lewis, finishing in second place, and Nick Thorp in third. The special trophy was presented at the Symposium afternoon bash.

What 2007 has to offer Idle AC.

Once again we achieved a huge amount in 2006. We hope to build on our success and continue to offer a great deal in 2007.  We will continue to build up the club in terms of the numbers, the ethos, and in the support and enthusiasm that we can all provide to one another. We will continue to offer weekly coached sessions on Tuesdays, offering hill and speed work. In addition we also offer additional monthly coached sessions on the 1st Wednesday in every month (at 6.30pm).  We will continue with the Attendance and Handicap Scheme and Steve will again be offering the vets the delights of the Vets League plus other events.  We will hold our fifth Annual General Meeting in April.

We will continue to encourage members to race at a variety of distances, especially the races that form the 2007 club race listed events. Once again we hope to support the Black Sheep Series and the John Carr Series.

In addition to running events there will be ‘social’ events such as the WYWL Presentation evening on 9th March hosted by Skipton at Saltaire (see below), Steve’s brewery trip & the annual Idle Beer Festival. A summer track session is also something to look forward to.

However the highlight of 2007 will be our hosting of the 3rd Idle Trail race on Sunday 15th July. We will need the whole club (plus family and friends) to make it a success- please ensure everyone is available.  With the excellent feedback we received from last year’s event we hope to reach our race limit.

Finally, of course, we hope to be competing in the West Yorkshire Winter League. This is just a tiny (there’ll be loads more stuff!) number of things that Idle AC will be offering in 2007.

We will continue to keep members regularly updated at the club sessions, on our website, within the monthly Idle Gossip and within the monthly committee minutes. If you want something done or have ideas for things you want the club to do- see a committee member.

For those runners entering via the web site you will be able to print off a standard race entry form for each race; as the race organisers are not sending out Race Packs this year due to increased postal charges. Individual race entry forms will be on the website in January.

West Yorkshire Winter League 2006/7 season

Update; Another fine but day for the third race of the 2006/7 WYWL season at Oakwell Hall, hosted by Dewsbury Road Runners.  We again had over 200 runners, including over 70 women line up amongst the field of runners from the 8 clubs. This included 23 runners from Idle AC.  This new course was approx 5 miles but to many it seemed further due to the very muddy conditions. However, most seemed to like the new venue as it was a very varied, mixed terrain course.

Ian Fisher won his third successive race, and once again there were strong runs from the male team, especially from Chris Stubbs & from Adrian. The women were led home by Jo who finished in 7th place, with strong performances from Clare, Amnuay & from the ever improving Sarah. Overall we all worked together and pulled ourselves into 4th place despite having a few of the team missing. Well done.

The remaining fixtures for 2006/7 are as follows:

Date            Host club                          Venue

4. Jan 28th     Baildon Runners       Tong Park, Baildon. Note 1pm start

5. Feb 18th    St.Bede’s                  Esholt woods.

With the exception of the Baildon event (1pm start) all races will start at 11am. Full details will be circulated to club members prior to each event.

Whilst the League does offer individual trophy positions, its primary objective is team competition.  The five team scores are added together to decide the following team trophies:

1st Combined Team, 2nd Combined Team, 3rd Combined Team.

1st Male Team.

1st Female team.

1st Vets Team (combination of male/females).

A club team is the first seven men to cross the line (which must include 2 vets), and the first three women (including 1 vet), in each event.

The vets’ team is the 2 male and the one female counting vets added together.

Different runners may score in different races - it’s just first past the post on the day.

The first Combined Team can enter the National Cross Country Final and the 2nd Combined Team can enter the Plate Race at the National Final which will take place at Nottingham in March 07.  Further details will be circulated prior to each event.

The Vets Bill

Happy New Year to All, although it may be happier for some more than others.

It has come to my attention that one of our vets has got a taste for dressing up for races, not content with the pre- Christmas fancy dress events, he has taken to wearing women's clothing at races. Much like an iceberg you only see the top 10% I wonder what lies beneath, to protect his identity I'll only say his fang's worse than his bite.

Looking back to the 2006 Yorkshire Vet Grand Prix series Anna Lincoln and Pete Helliwell  finished 9th and 6th respectively in their age categories with an overall team position of 16th.

Looking forward to 2007 the first Vets GP race is on Sunday 4th February at Horsforth with a early start time of 10:00. Details as follows: Venue Horsforth Hall Park Cricket Club. From Bradford A647 to ring road then left to A6120 follow to Horsforth.  Turn left at the Eleventh Earl Pub.  Car park 100m up road on the left. Course – Road and trail approximately 6 miles. Entry fee on the day £2

(Please register if you can before the day by looking on the YVAA web-site on how to do this)

Changing facilities but limited showers, it is a cricket club! There are 2 car parks around the park which are sign posted.  Bar and food available after the race.

Don't forget the Saltaire Brewery trip, it looks likely to happen now on a Monday night sometime in February, let me know if you’re interested.

Ever had problems sleeping after a hard training session? Wake up in the middle of the night with aching legs or just wake up plain tired next morning……sound familiar?  For the last 4 weeks I've be trying a new product which may help you if you suffer from any of the above.

The product is called Nocte by SiS which claims to optimise sleep. It contains all the essential ingredients needed by the body for rest, repair and recovery, whilst maintaining a healthy immune system and promoting health and well being.

According to SiS,  Nocte contains a mixture of proteins, magnesium, zinc and vitamin B6 all of which aid muscle recovery, reducing tiredness and muscle twitching also providing essential nutrients to boost your immune system.

What I've found since using it after long runs, races or speed sessions is I can now have a full nights sleep, my legs don't ache as much either during the night or the next day and I feel much less tired in the morning. If you try this I recommend just mixing with cold water and drinking before bedtime, you can drink it hot but it tends to go a bit lumpy if the water is too hot.

Just don't forget you read it here first.
