2007 Club race.

This year we have picked a ‘fell’ race as our 2007 club race. This is no ordinary fell race – it’s a runnable trail type course that is accessible to ALL, regardless of your running abilities.

Which Race: BUNNY RUN (1).

When: Tues 3rd April at 7.00pm.

Where: Haworth, (up from Sun Inn at top of Haworth – see below).

Course: Approx 3 mile on runnable tracks, with only 1 real descent/ascent (but I could still run it).

Why: To get the WHOLE club to a local event that has a great atmosphere.

Afterwards: You get CHOCOLATE for running!!!! All Prizes are EASTER EGGS!! It would be good to have everyone come into the Sun pub for a drink afterwards – it’s packed but wonderful.

Great Daffodil Appeal.

We are supporting the Marie Curie Cancer Care Great Daffodil Appeal. We have a box of daffodils at the club and we hope that members will pay a suggested £1 donation.

·       Marie Curie Cancer Care provides high quality nursing care and emotional support, completely free of charge, to thousands of cancer patients and their families across the UK.

·       This year they will care for around 25,000 terminally ill patients in their own homes and in the Marie Curie Hospices.

·       By taking part in the Great Daffodil Appeal, we will have helped to make it possible for this special care to continue.

Visit their website www.mariecurie.org.uk/daffodil.

Annual General Meeting – Thursday 29th March 07.

Idle AC’s fifth AGM will be held on Thursday 29th March at 7.15pm at the Cricket Club.  This is your big chance to air your views on the club’s present and future policy and activities.  Please note that there will be no club training on this date. If you are unable to attend please vote for the committee positions via proxy. Members are reminded that subs will be collected (£15) at the AGM (or before if anyone wants to pay in advance!!) when a membership form will need to be completed.

It would be appreciated if all subs could be paid by the beginning of May at the latest as annual subs need to be paid earlier to England Athletics.

Open Morning Sun 15th April 07 at 9.30am

We will be hosting an Open Morning at the club on Sun 15th April at 9.30am. This will involve a coached session (accessible to all) led by Chris, a talk on a running related subject, and refreshments. Please support this event but more importantly invite prospective members along. There is no obligation for them to take part in the session, they are welcome to just come along, meet a few people in a relaxed setting to join us for a cuppa.

London Marathon 22nd April 07

We have 6 Idle AC vests on the London marathon start line this year. Good luck to: Jo, Adrian, Gary, Tim, Simon Bellwood, & Ana.  Sadly both Dave Currie & Hannah Peacock may have to defer their places to next year due to injury.

Adrian has decided to raise money for the Children with Leukaemia charity, and will be part of the Mr Men and Little Miss Team. If you want to sponsor him please see him at the club or visit: www.bmycharity.com/adriant

50th Birthday Celebrations.

Congratulations to Steve Little who celebrated his 50th birthday this month. A lot of people would celebrate with a party or family gathering, not Steve – he & Sue went to Rome where he ran the Rome Marathon!!

New members.

This month we welcome Maria Furness. Maria is keen to improve her race times & seems to be enjoying a few of the off road runs on a Sunday morning.

John Carr Race Series.

In past years Idle AC have been the largest club for all three races and this year we hope to be even stronger for this series of 5k races around Esholt on Wednesday nights on 2nd , 9th and 16th May 06, starting at 7.30pm. Get a ‘league’ position by completing all 3 races. Entry forms are available at the club.  This year due to the increasing popularity of the series and to avoid disappointment only postal entries are being accepted. Please get your entries in early as the race limit is 400. Postal entries close Mon 23rd April.

Fell Races: March 07 to end May 07.

Please note that many races require that competitors carry waterproof clothing, map and compass for the competitor’s safety. Failure to comply with a race organiser's requirements will mean that you will be barred from taking part in the race. Competitors should arrive at races prepared to carry any or all of the following equipment: Windproof whole body cover, other body cover appropriate to the conditions, map and compass suitable for navigating the course, whistle, emergency food (long races). This equipment is mandatory at all Cat A Long and Medium races.

If this is the first time you have considered fell racing select a race distance well under the distance you normally run on the road.

If you retire during a race you MUST notify the officials at the finish.

If you like the idea of fell running and would like to have a go please speak to Chris.

All fell races are given a grade indicating length and difficulty. Difficulty is indicated by:

A, no less than 250 feet climb per mile, not more than 20% on roads, at least 1 mile in length (NASTY);

B, not less than 125 feet climb per mile, not more than 30% on roads (FAIRLY NASTY);

C, not less than 100 feet of climb per mile, not more than 40% on roads and contain genuine fell terrain (NOT VERY NASTY).

ROMBALDS MOOR FELL RACES – sadly will not be held in 2007.

West Yorkshire Winter League 2006/7 season

It was another bright sunny day for the final race of the 2006/7 WYWL season at Esholt, hosted by St.Bede’s.  There were slightly fewer runners from the 8 clubs although we still managed to field 25 runners. The course was slightly over 5 miles and as usual involved a stream. Most seemed to like the very varied, mixed terrain course, although a few runners managed to do a different route!

Ian Fisher won his fifth successive race, and once again there were strong runs from Adrian and the ever improving Gary. The women were led home by Jo, with strong performances from Clare, Amnuay, Rhea and from Maria who ran her first ever cross country and loved it!

The Presentation night on 9th March at Victoria Hall was well attended (29 of us!!) & over 120 at the do. Everyone seemed to have a good time.

The Idle Trail Race – Sunday 15th July 2007

Following the amazing amount of positive feedback from our hosting of the of the 2nd Idle Trail Race we are now organising this year’s event, confident that it will be even more popular – so much so that we may have to ask Club members not to take part, partly because we need your help, and partly because we need the space!

The 2006 Idle Trail Race came 136th out of 366 in the Runners World ‘Readers Races of the Year’ poll. The overall score for the race was 87% and 100% of runners said that they would run the race again. Check out the Runners world website for details.  We are already starting to get entries in for the 2007 event!!

Idle AC celebrates - We are 5 on 22nd March 07.

Idle AC celebrates our 5th birthday on 22nd March. How quickly the first 5 years has gone!! When we formed the club in 2002 we had no base (we met in a bus shelter in Morrisons car park), we were unaffiliated, we had no money and no kit.

Since then we have achieved so much in road, cross country, fell & trail running and the growth in membership has shown how the club can succeed.

In the first five years we have been West Yorkshire Winter League Champions, been voted UK Athletics Regional club of the year (off Track) and hosted two hugely successful Idle Trail Races. This year we also hosted a new cross country course.

In addition we have trained week after week, participated in hundreds of races from local venues such as Apperley Bridge & Esholt to as far as Sydney in Australia.

In 5 years we have put Idle AC on the map and have been acknowledged as a highly respected club with a bright future ahead of us.  With many new members coming into the Club, and new ideas and initiatives to develop, the next 5 years promise to be just as busy and successful.

Mablethorpe Marathon -16th Sept 07.

Mablethorpe - Doesn’t the name itself inspire you to go for a seaside trip & to run either a full, half marathon or even 10k (although I feel everyone is capable of a half!)?? We now have entries forms for this event and I’m wanting to gauge if we would have interest in a weekend away – possibly staying in nearby Skegness, which interestingly has the largest concentration of caravans in Western Europe.

The letter that came with the entry forms says that the organizers pride themselves on providing an excellent flat course with a variety of superb scenery taking in the Lincolnshire Wold villages and finishing along the prom by one of the finest beaches in the UK. As ever it would be good to get men’s and women’s teams in the full & in the half. Visit the website for further details: www.mablethorpemarathon.org

The 2006 race was the first one - there were 108 marathon runners, with 2.44 winning for the men & 3.24 the women’s winning time. The half marathon winning times were 1.18 & 1.33. The race is a bit pricey at £25/£15/£10 though.

Idle Web!

There have been a number of positive changes to the website recently - some of them subtle, others more “upfront”.

The new “search engine” is now completely up to speed & I’m glad to say has been an instant hit listening to some of the feedback I’ve had. It’s been great for you to have a quick look for past PB’s or past form at certain races without having to trawl through the 5 years of results that are currently  on the site.

It has everyone’s races from the club’s inception back in 2002 right up to date.

Just to recap - the idea of the page is to allow you to see what races you have competed in & be able to quickly compare your times.  You can also search by race distance or venue. As per all the standard results tables, clicking on the header of each column also will sort the results by that column.  If you’ve not seen this feature yet it’s on the “Events & Results” menu under current events and called “Your Races”.

I’ve also implemented a new channel of communication which is in the form of an interactive “Calendar” feature. At the moment it has details of current training nights & club races but the plan is that it can be updated by any individual club member so that they can add a diary entry to let everyone know they are going for a Sunday run for example. Anyone else can then click on the diary entry & it will copy it to their local calendar. Anyone can access this calendar from either the home menu or the link n the home page. If you would like to be able to add your own runs or post any details of races you think people would be interested in, you need to have a Google account. If you already have an email system that you are happy with you don’t need to use Google’s system, but you need to create yourself a Google account. Then send me your Google account email address (not your password), & I’ll grant access for you to update the Idle AC calendar. ……& for the really techno saddo’s amongst us it is compatible with outlook & iCal so you can update your PC or Mac & then synchronise the calendar with your hand-held PDA or mobile phone etc…..

That’s it for now as I need to turn my attention to the AGM that’s looming around the corner.  If anyone has any further suggestions or ideas for the website, I’m always happy to listen. You can speak to me at the club as I’m available at most Training sessions on Tuesdays and Thursdays or alternatively, send me an email me to: martin@idleac.co.uk

From the Coach…

It was the morning of the League do that Tommy Mathers, an old acquaintance from Idle Cricket Club, brought round a box of Marie Curie Cancer care daffodils for us to sell at Idle AC.  He’s a true gentleman of the old school, and is like a living history of his club.  I didn’t know he was involved with the charity, which provides nurses to care for terminally ill patients in their homes, and much needed respite for carers, but it seemed entirely fitting.  I had personal experience of these nurses in the time leading up to my father’s death, and an email on the subject from Alison confirmed that they have been a hugely positive influence in many people’s lives.

It led me to consider something that runners often do very well – raising money for very worthy causes indeed.  The cynical might say that it’s just a good excuse to do something we enjoy, and give it a real purpose.  But there is more to it than that.  We can become overloaded with charity requests, but I think there is a need in most of us to feel occasionally that we are doing something good – something that helps others.  That can be very effectively expressed in the setting of a running club.

We’ve done things of course already.  In the early days of the Club I decided to lead by example, and run a marathon on a treadmill for the Lord Mayor’s Appeal.  I had a great team behind me and it was a resounding success, but as I collapsed on the playground at the Idle Tide afterwards with the mother of all cramp attacks, I vowed to make the next effort a team one. A year later 20 Club members smashed the World Marathon Record by running between cricket stumps in relay, in aid of the same cause.  The feeling of togetherness and achievement brought an enduring glow to the Club.  Last year’s Keswick to Barrow team effort, where each of us ran the full 40 miles, will remain in my heart as an athletic achievement of which I am hugely proud, both personally and in terms of what I have seen my clubmates do.  Massive organisational achievements at my previous club were the relays across England and then across Ireland. In fact so much so that I still toy with the idea of another Coast to Coast effort.

All of which leads me to draw together my argument.  The time could well be right to determine the activity and the cause – to make a huge effort in our chosen activity and achieve something for a good reason. There are benefits for the chosen charity, for us as individuals, and for the club.

Arguably, because of the massive will, drive and determination to succeed in adversity in the first years at the Club, we achieved too much too soon.  As our fifth birthday approaches, there is consolidation, rebuilding even, to be done.  One definite method by which this can be achieved is a project, which can unite Club members into working towards one common goal.

It would be an astonishing achievement if I were able to suggest and bring about a charity fundraising event which brought every Club member together, and had a positive effect on the whole Club.  Yet I would like to try.

Many Club members know about the huge benefits brought in the past by charity fundraising efforts.  Through such activities we see the very best of each other.  Also I believe the Club has been reinvigorated by the arrival of several new members, who have each begun to make their own individual contribution in individual and social terms, and who are capable of very much more.  I feel that clubs often underestimate their greatest resource – their members.  I do not.

My own suggestions are merely examples.  Perhaps the Dales Way beckons.  The Wainwright Coast to Coast.  Or the new Hadrian’s Wall long distance path, which joins North Sea to Irish Sea.  I of course suggest these should be done in a single day in relay.  Someone else may have an idea?!

But finally, why the daffodils?  Each person has their own personal affiliation in charity terms.  The night before my father died, I was joined at his side by a Marie Curie nurse.  She came as if to work, with a sandwich box. She tended him through the night, a calming and reassuring presence, who gently predicted that he would die at lunchtime the next day.  She was right.  After her colleagues had laid him out and left, I found that a single flower had been placed upon his chest – a daffodil.

It’s just a thought – it’s only running, after all.

                                                                                                Chris.
