The hot weather and the sheer volume of the field meant that some of our runners were disappointed with their runs and so many of them are now looking for autumn marathons to get the times they wanted.

Carr Lane Challenge 5 mile race.

This is a scenic trail race which forms part of the Wrose Carnival on Sat 7th July in the afternoon. It should be a great local family day out. Entry forms are available at the club. Alternatively if you don’t fancy running but are available to help out as a marshal let us know and we’ll pass on your details to the Wrose Carnival Committee. Note this is the same day as the Burn Valley Half marathon.

New Members

This month we welcome two new members: Phil Joyner & Shaun Lennon. Phil recently moved to the area and was keen to join a local club where he could train & get his race times down. Shaun had been threatening to come to the club for years but finally came & joined us and is keen to get more involved in off road & fell running. Welcome!

Fell Races: May 07 to end July 07.

Please note that many races require that competitors carry waterproof clothing, map and compass for the competitor’s safety. Failure to comply with a race organiser's requirements will mean that you will be barred from taking part in the race. Competitors should arrive at races prepared to carry any or all of the following equipment: Windproof whole body cover, other body cover appropriate to the conditions, map and compass suitable for navigating the course, whistle, emergency food (long races). This equipment is mandatory at all Cat A Long and Medium races.

If this is the first time you have considered fell racing select a race distance well under the distance you normally run on the road.

If you retire during a race you MUST notify the officials at the finish.

If you like the idea of fell running and would like to have a go please speak to Chris.

All fell races are given a grade indicating length and difficulty. Difficulty is indicated by:

A, no less than 250 feet climb per mile, not more than 20% on roads, at least 1 mile in length (NASTY);

B, not less than 125 feet climb per mile, not more than 30% on roads (FAIRLY NASTY);

C, not less than 100 feet of climb per mile, not more than 40% on roads and contain genuine fell terrain (NOT VERY NASTY).

The Idle Trail Race – Sunday 15th July 2007

Following the amazing amount of positive feedback from our hosting of the of the 2nd Idle Trail Race we are now organising this year’s event, confident that it will be even more popular – so much so that we may have to ask Club members not to take part, partly because we need your help, and partly because we need the space!

The 2006 Idle Trail Race came 136th out of 366 in the Runners World ‘Readers Races of the Year’ poll. The overall score for the race was 87% and 100% of runners said that they would run the race again. Check out the Runners world website for details.  We are already starting to get entries in for the 2007 event!!

We already have a number of entries in for the race including lots of entries from Goole Viking Striders as it’s their championship event. Will Goole be the largest club???

In addition to Chris, Davina & Martin we now welcome Steve, Tim & Lisa Hall who will be assisting with the final few weeks race prep.

Race against time……..

The speed was tugging at bits of my body I didn’t know existed… my heart was pounding. All I could think of was the clock ticking away…

Warren was inches in front. As we descended through the jagged fells of the southern Lakes and took a sharp bend, I saw his entire body flex before he quickly righted himself. My mouth was dry.

The man setting the pace was Phill Routh, his eyes fixed mad-man like on the twisting route in front of him.

We knew Chris Smith was behind … and he was struggling to keep up. Phill had led us past him earlier on. His acceleration had gone. He was boxed in and frustrated.

As another bend sent shock waves through our bodies, I looked down at my watch. Ten minutes to go before the start of the Hutton Roof fell race. Phill’s trusted BMW tightly hugged another corner. Warren – sitting in the front- passenger seat – grimaced as a hair’s breadth separated us from an old-stone wall. This was the race before the race…

Delayed in traffic on the 50-mile journey up to South Cumbria, it was touch and go whether we’d get there in time for the start.

At last a road sign telling us the hamlet of Hutton Roof was just three miles away. We’d be alright. We’d probably get there with a few minutes to spare! Phill’s phone rings and sitting in the back, it’s passed to me. It’s Chris – we knew he’d also been caught up in the lengthy traffic jam that had lost us about 45 minutes. He wanted me to pick up a number for him. Come what may, he was going to run the race, even if it meant a late start.

But while Chris was on the phone discussing race-number tactics, we missed a sign pointing us up a small lane to Hutton Roof. By the time we realised our mistake, we’d lost the few minutes that would get us to the start for the official off. To make matters worse, an orange light was flashing on Phill’s dashboard. He was dangerously low on petrol.

Throwing caution to the wind, we raced on to Hutton Roof. We got there to see Chris’s car parked up. He’d got there before us and he was already working his way up the 1200-ft climb that is Hutton Roof crag.

By the time we set off, we were 14 minutes behind everyone else. But the camaraderie among us stragglers was strong. A lass from Horsforth also turned up late and was about to turn around and go home but we encouraged her to start with us.

It was a great course and you could see why it’s called Hutton Roof. Once you’ve scrambled to the top of the crag, you have the unfolding peaks of the Lake District stretching in one direction and the shimmering waters of Morecambe Bay in the other.

It was a hot afternoon. By the time we got back to Hutton Roof, the finishing funnel was empty – save Davina and the twins cheering us in. Chris Stubbs was also there – his time management was better. He was able to get to the start with time to spare and had got around the course in a lightning 56 minutes.

This fell malarkey leaves you both exhausted and exhilarated. But we faced one last challenge. We were in the middle of nowhere – and Phil was out of petrol. How would we get back?

Phill had one last trick up his sleeve. Being on the roof of the fells, we were able to coast the 3 miles down into Kirkby Lonsdale and into a petrol station. A perfect end to what turned out to be a very enjoyable afternoon. – Dave Lewis.

Summer Away runs:

This summer we will have at least 2 ‘away’ runs. Two definite dates have been set, one on a Thursday evening and one on a Sunday morning.  The dates are as follows:

Washburn Valley Relay – Friday 20th July, 7.15pm

We have once again been invited to this 4 x 4 mile relay for men’s, women’s or mixed teams, around the Timble, Swinsty, and Fewston reservoirs above Otley, organised by Otley AC. We had been told that it was being held on 20th April but having now received the details it’s actually being held on 20th July so we have time to sort out teams.

The course is split into four segments averaging 4 miles and is on public footpaths, bridleways and a small amount of road. The race is not marshalled and as there are only limited course marking it is essential to recce the course beforehand. This year should be slightly easier as so many of us ran last year’s relay.

Let us know if you are interested as it would be good to get as many teams of any standard out as possible – it’s only a fiver a team!  Due to its popularity Otley are imposing a limit of 45 clubs and a maximum of 6 teams per club. Otley are organising practice runs during July, and we have maps showing the legs. Alternatively check out Otley AC’s website for maps & course descriptions: www.otleyac.co.uk

Please let Chris know ASAP if you want to be part of the teams.

From the Coach…

After eighty or so road marathons, it seemed like odd behaviour to me – but this was my plan:  as I left the start of the Brathay Windermere Marathon, I knew that at each water station, which the rules indicate should occur every 3 miles at such an event, I would refuse the offered bottles and cups, stick to the crown of the road, and run right past.

I clutched in my right hand a 500ml bottle of Umbro isotonic sports drink (mixed berry flavour – on offer at £1.89 for four at Morrison’s).  Nothing else then for the duration of a marathon race – no water, no gels, no nothing.  I was surrounded by runners carrying a variety of apparatus designed to maximise their performance – camelbacks, fully loaded gel belts, and bumbags laden with liquid fuel.  At water stations people slowed down or stopped and took on great gulps of liquid.  “No water for three miles – get some if you want some!” urged the water station marshals, knowing that the sun was high and the temperature rising. It was good not to break my rhythm once I had found it – I stuck to the crown of the road and ran right past.

This apparently bizarre approach to marathon race hydration was all part of an experiment.  So what was the premise?  I wanted simply to demonstrate that effective pre race feeding and hydration were enough to get me through the race.  I had drunk lots of water and sports drinks over the preceding two days, and wolfed down pasta meals followed by my own favoured rice pudding.  And I never, ever avoid salt or salty foods.

Shouldn’t I know the answers already?  Isn’t it obvious that if you run a marathon on a warm sunny day you should take on liquid at every opportunity?  And don’t we all know that sports drinks are better than water because they provide a source of quick release carbohydrates and the minerals lost in sweat?

One person died at the London Marathon this year.  Many would be unsurprised at one fatality at such a large event which our own runners described as difficult because of the heat.  Yet the cause of death took me aback – it was hyponatraemia:   the guy had drunk too much water.

It was Davina who spotted the article in the Times on the subject, written by Peta Bee:

“During intense or prolonged exercise, the kidneys cannot excrete excess fluid as efficiently as normal.  Water is retained, especially in the highly absorbent brain cells.  Eventually the pressure becomes such that the body shuts down its primary functions, such as breathing and heart rate.  In the worst cases the condition proves fatal.”

She goes on to describe the early symptoms as “…dizziness, confusion, vomiting, extreme tiredness and respiratory problems.”   How many distance runners then have been misdiagnosed as dehydrated by well meaning medical staff at endurance events, when in fact they are hyponatraemic?  Clearly it happens, and afflicted athletes then make the condition worse by drinking more.

There are great complications which can occur, for instance the fact that it is possible to become both dehydrated and hyponatraemic, with the body having to decide whether to dump off water to prevent over dilution of sodium, or keep it to retain blood pressure and avoid circulatory collapse.  The struggle the kidneys make to operate efficiently can also be interfered with by such medications as aspirin, ibuprofen and diuretics, which can lead to hyponatraemic symptoms.

The principal cause of hyponatraemia is a shortage of sodium – the sodium to water ratio in the body’s blood and cells is too low.  Research in New Zealand looked at the mechanics of what happens, and how the risks can be avoided.  Doug Hiller, M.D., working with Hawaii Ironman triathletes, recommended ingestion of 1g of sodium per hour in long, hot races.   Quite simply the sports drinks don’t contain this level of sodium – that equates to over half a gallon of Gatorade an hour.  Alternatively, over my three and a half hour effort, I would have had to consume 35 bags of Seabrook Ready Salted crisps (0.1g sodium per bag) to give the required intake.

My marathon experiment was only one race – not enough evidence of course, but despite my low food and fuel intake during the event I was still capable of accelerating at 24 miles.  I have never taken on so little in any marathon race, and I was fine.  I was pleased with my time, drove home from Cumbria that afternoon, and suffered no ill effects.  My argument is simple – eat well and drink plenty in the days before a race, don’t avoid salt, and toe the start line with a full tank – because what you do during the race will have minimal effect in comparison with good pre race preparation.  Observe the top athletes, who take a little fluid on board every now and then.  Principally, though,  go in well prepared, so that you can concentrate – not on eating and drinking – but on running.

- Chris
