Idle Beer Festival: Fri 29th June 07

Please support the Hepworth & Idle cricket Club when they stage their Idle Beer Festival at the end June 07. Fri 29th June – Sun 1st July.  The Friday usually proves to be something of a social for Idle AC. Entry price confirmed as £1. Opening times: Fri 7-11pm, Sat 2-6pm and 7-11pm, Sun 2-6pm.  Chris will man the bar on Saturday afternoon – want to help?

Fell Races: June 07 to end Aug 07.

Please note that many races require that competitors carry waterproof clothing, map and compass for the competitor’s safety. Failure to comply with a race organiser's requirements will mean that you will be barred from taking part in the race. Competitors should arrive at races prepared to carry any or all of the following equipment: Windproof whole body cover, other body cover appropriate to the conditions, map and compass suitable for navigating the course, whistle, emergency food (long races). This equipment is mandatory at all Cat A Long and Medium races.

If this is the first time you have considered fell racing select a race distance well under the distance you normally run on the road.

If you retire during a race you MUST notify the officials at the finish.

If you like the idea of fell running and would like to have a go please speak to Chris.

All fell races are given a grade indicating length and difficulty. Difficulty is indicated by:

A, no less than 250 feet climb per mile, not more than 20% on roads, at least 1 mile in length (NASTY);

B, not less than 125 feet climb per mile, not more than 30% on roads (FAIRLY NASTY);

C, not less than 100 feet of climb per mile, not more than 40% on roads and contain genuine fell terrain (NOT VERY NASTY).

Length is indicated by: L, 12 miles or more; M, 6 miles and over but less than 12 miles; S, under 6 miles.

The Idle Trail Race – Sunday 15th July 2007

Following the amazing amount of positive feedback from our hosting of the of the 2nd Idle Trail Race we are now organising this year’s event, confident that it will be even more popular – so much so that we may have to ask Club members not to take part, partly because we need your help, and partly because we need the space!

The 2006 Idle Trail Race came 136th out of 366 in the Runners World ‘Readers Races of the Year’ poll. The overall score for the race was 87% and 100% of runners said that they would run the race again. Check out the Runners world website for details.  We already have a number of entries in for the 2007 event!!

We already have a number of entries in for the race including lots of entries from Goole Viking Striders as it’s their championship event. Will Goole be the largest club???  Or will it be Meltham AC or Ilkley Harriers??

In addition to Chris, Davina & Martin we now welcome Steve, Tim & Lisa Hall who will be assisting with the final few weeks race prep.

Happy Birthday….

Happy 40th Birthday to Amnuay. Watch out for all the F40 club records being smashed this summer.

Another member also has a 40th birthday soon & then there’s a 50th (and a party) later in the year. More details in a future Gossip!!

That’s another fine mess you’ve gotten me into……..

“I’ve entered the Jane Tomlinson Race” said Suzanne a couple of weeks ago. I got the worrying feeling it was more of an invitation than a statement of fact.

“Oh ….right…. Well you know I don’t ‘do’ races,” I replied.

Her silence was deafening and my guilt at being such a wuss was audible.

Less than 24 hours later Adrian had committed me (some may say not before time?!) by entering on my behalf – damn the internet!

I told anyone who would listen (that’ll be Jo, Davina and Steve then) that the only conditions I was prepared to run this darn thing under were zero stress and maximum enjoyment.

And so here I was 8.00am Sunday 24th June 2007 in the middle of Leeds with the ‘friend’ who was to blame for all this – STRESSING!!

I scoured the ‘field’ for potential competition in the secret hope that several thousand of them had done no training and were inappropriately dressed – Great, saw loads of them – one girl was hearing hiking boots. I wouldn’t even like to imagine her blisters on the Monday morning!

My joy quickly turned to despair –Pudsey Pacers and Stainland Lions (with their ‘on tour’ banner!) had turned out en mass. I was going to get my arse kicked and disgrace the Idle AC vest I was wearing.

Had the shops been open I would have nipped in to buy a ‘DKNY’ t-shirt that some of my new ‘plodding’ chums were sporting (for my own anonymity) but alas it was all too late…..

The pre race hour had passed in I swear what was only 30 seconds – It was 9.00am – we were off!

After we had been running through Leeds centre for at least 25 minutes, I looked and saw a clock tower.

“Suzanne – I don’t know how to tell you this but its only 9.05am!!”

“What??!!” was all she shrieked in a nervous laughter. Time for a mind and body reality check…..

WE very quickly decided on our strategy to get through the next 9.5K  - Remember the zero stress and maximum enjoyment thing? Well that’s exactly what we did!

I can honestly say that having dodged many an invitation to enter races, I am really pleased that I didn’t manage to get out of this one. The atmosphere was fabulous – and it was a ‘proper’ race particularly for the top end runner as there was a sub 40 minute front of field start. So all you ‘proper’ Idle AC runners reading this (you know who you are!) I think it could be a potential PB course for next year as it felt more or less flat (Do I sound like I know what I’m’ on about’?!).

Well the next 9.5k came & went with relative ease (I can almost hear our Coach shouting “well you didn’t run hard enough then!!”) and we finished feeling fantastic with huge smiles on our faces having strolled round in approx. 1.03.

We don’t know the exact time as we didn’t look and to be honest really didn’t care. We’d had a great time and that’s all that mattered to us.

We bumped into ‘Bouncy Clare’, She’d been on crutches only last week and had still romped round in 48 minutes despite getting struck at the back (one of those ‘proper runners’ I was talking about).

As for that Idle Ac vest – from the people who shouted “Come on Idle”, to the bloke who said “See you at the Trail Race”, or the girl who enquired about our club and the lady who literally patted us on our sweaty backs because she was so proud to see us representing where she lives! – Who needs ‘DKNY’ anyway? – Elaine Trevelyan.

Summer Away runs:

Sunday 1st July – Steve's Magical Mystery Tour. This will be around 10 miles in the very scenic Washburn Valley (around Blubberhouses, Timble, Swinsty, Timble & Fewston Reservoirs). Park at the Yorkshire Water Swinsty Moor Carpark to run at 9.30am. Alternatively meet at the club and set off at 8.45am. This will be a steady run and ALL are encouraged to come along. Bring a bit of money for possible tea/coffee or ice cream!!

Pudsey 10k Challenge: Sunday 22nd July at 10.45am

We hope that club members will support Pudsey and enter their 10k challenge, especially as they will be supporting the Idle Trail Race.  The course is scenic challenging mixed terrain offering something for everyone. All finishers get a T Shirt and there are team prizes (last year we received males and female team prizes). In addition there is a 2 mile family fun run at 10am and a Park Fun Run (approx 400meteres) for the under 8’s at 9.30am. Last year they reached their 400 race limit and are expected to do so again. Therefore get your entries in ASAP. Entry forms are available at the club or via Pudsey’s website: www.pudseypacers.com

Amsterdam Marathon – 21st Oct 07.

Whilst some members are interested in the Mablethorpe full & half marathons in September there is also interest in a marathon/half marathon trip to Amsterdam. A few of us have booked cheap flights via KLM or Jet2 and booked hotels via the internet. I have 12 race entry forms if anyone wants one or you can enter online. For further race details see: www.amsterdammarathon.nl/ (you can get it in English).

Washburn Valley Relay – Friday 20th July, 7.15pm

We have once again been invited to this 4 x 4 mile relay for men’s, women’s or mixed teams, around the Timble, Swinsty, and Fewston reservoirs above Otley, organised by Otley AC. We had been told that it was being held on 20th April but having now received the details it’s actually being held on 20th July so we have time to sort out teams.

The course is split into four segments averaging 4 miles and is on public footpaths, bridleways and a small amount of road. The race is not marshalled and as there are only limited course marking it is essential to recce the course beforehand. This year should be slightly easier as so many of us ran last year’s relay.

Let us know if you are interested as it would be good to get as many teams of any standard out as possible – it’s only a fiver a team!  Due to its popularity Otley are imposing a limit of 45 clubs and a maximum of 6 teams per club. Otley are organising practice runs during July, and we have maps showing the legs. Alternatively check out Otley AC’s website for maps & course descriptions: www.otleyac.co.uk

Please let Chris know ASAP if you want to be part of the teams.

First Aiders.

Chris, Martin, & Lisa Hall will be taking training to become club first aiders during the summer. If anyone else wants to be considered for this training please let Chris, Davina or Martin know ASAP.

New Summer Fleeces.

We will soon take stock of a new red Summer Fleece which will retail at between £18-£19. The fleeces can be individually ordered to all men’s and women’s’ sizes and are fitted. See Chris’s fleece and if you’d like one please place your order with Davina.

Rougemont Chase & Weeton Show

I received an email drawing our attention to the race & show below. It looks like it might be a good day out.   Rougemont Chase, Weeton - 7.4km multi-terrain. Replaces Almscliffe Crag Race. Run in conjunction with local show - so a good day out. Sunday July 29th - 12.30 start. Weeton Show ground. We have generous sponsors so good cash prizes. Details on show website -  http://www.weetonshow.co.uk/cragrace.htm

From the Coach…

I don’t really buy running magazines anymore. I remember my first one though – a copy of “Today’s Runner” in 1987.  I didn’t even run, and felt a fraud, like when I was a kid and I bought a skateboard magazine before I had a skateboard. You soon catch up though – you read the articles and the adverts, you buy the gear and you enter the events.  But after a while you start to realise that there’s a kind of repetition in the content of the magazines.  What they really rely on is a constant stream of newcomers to the activity.

Repetition in content is something I always hoped to avoid in the Idle Gossip, yet it of course serves the purpose of a calendar of the running year, among other things.  Therefore to an extent some annual repetition is necessary and relevant.  It is possible to take an imaginative approach to an old subject, yet I haven’t dressed this one up.  Two years ago we took up our position among the other distance running clubs in Yorkshire, with the promotion of our own race.  Once we had established a viable running community and then an official club, we had not only the right to exist in such a way, and enjoy the opportunities available to us in terms of access to events and a constant supply of running and social companionships, but also a responsibility to give something back to the greater running community in the form of our own event with our own signature – The Idle Trail Race.

As a runner with an Idle AC vest on you will of course come to be associated with the event, and we firmly believe that we have two year’s worth of credit added to our name.  As the third Trail Race approaches my message, and my request, is simple.  The effort we put in on 15th July will be of direct benefit to the Club, and to the running community.  If you help out you are therefore not doing me a personal favour – you are simply benefiting the Club and your fellow members, and furthering the interests of your sport. If you can’t help out because you have other commitments (and those people have explained their situation to me, for which thank you) my message remains positive – we think we have a good team in place, though extra help is always a real bonus, and we hope to make you proud of your Club. Come and help us next time, and then I can do another bit of repetitive writing – an article about a successful Idle Trail Race.

- Chris.
