Please
note that many races require that competitors carry waterproof clothing, map
and compass for the competitor’s safety. Failure to comply with a race
organiser's requirements will mean that you will be barred from taking part in
the race. Competitors should arrive at races prepared to carry any or all of
the following equipment: Windproof whole body cover, other body cover
appropriate to the conditions, map and compass suitable for navigating the
course, whistle, emergency food (long races). This equipment is mandatory at
all Cat A Long and Medium races.
If this
is the first time you have considered fell racing select a race distance well
under the distance you normally run on the road.
If you
retire during a race you MUST notify the officials at the finish.
If
you like the idea of fell running and would like to have a go please speak to
Chris.
All fell
races are given a grade indicating length and difficulty. Difficulty is indicated
by:
A, no less than 250 feet climb per
mile, not more than 20% on roads, at least 1 mile in length (NASTY);
B, not less than 125 feet climb
per mile, not more than 30% on roads (FAIRLY NASTY);
C, not less than 100 feet of climb
per mile, not more than 40% on roads and contain genuine fell terrain (NOT VERY
NASTY).
Length
is indicated by: L,
12 miles or more; M, 6 miles and over but less than 12 miles; S, under 6 miles.

We all
offer congratulations to Alison & Paul Garlick, not forgetting BIG brother
Tom and welcome to Isabel who was born on 1st July. Hopefully lots
of you saw them when they visited the Idle Trail Race. We bought an outfit and
a Mothercare voucher from the club and Ali has sent a thank you card which will
be displayed at the club.
Tom was
in action at the Pudsey fun run and was recently seen training with Clare
Sweeney prior to the start of our race. Only 14 more years and he can officially
join Idle AC!!
In only
our third year of hosting the Idle Trail Race we have really established our
race in the hearts of many runners. With 225 entrants the race was a huge
success. The improvements that we
have made each year from listening to feedback from the competitors really paid
off and eliminating the steps to the canal proved a popular change. Our scenic
course from Apperley Bridge was won by Pudsey & Bramley’s Jamie Noon who
improved on his 2006 race when he came second. Tricia Sloan from Salford
Harriers was first woman said how much she had enjoyed the event. Both winners
received vouchers (courtesy of Crosstrax), a bottle of Champagne (courtesy of
Maria!) and a trophy. Once again
we received great feedback on the organization, friendly, helpful marshals and
how scenic the course is as it offers a great mixture in terrain. The race was
complimented by Dr Ron Hill MBE coming back again this year – when you
considered the number of races Ron hill has competed in it was great to think
that he felt Idle was worth returning to.
There
were large numbers of runners from Meltham AC who had named the race as a club
championship event and who picked up the women’s team prize, and from Ilkley
Harriers who were the male team winners. It was also good to see Goole Viking
Striders alongside the many other clubs that had entered teams.
We have
loads of positive feedback about the race. These are just a snap shot:
From the ratings
on the Runners World website the race has as 88% rating with 100% saying they
would do it again next year!! Not bad for only our third year.
What next?? We
start to plan for 2008 & aim to make it even better!
As this
was a week after our event it was great to go and just enjoy running the
‘challenging course’ and not have to stress about organising anything. However
I still couldn’t help looking at all the organising that goes into such an
event. It takes some doing as there’s a short park fun run for under 8’s, a 2
mile fun run & a 10k which not only goes through a large off road section
but crosses a couple of busy roads. As ever though the whole event(s) were
extremely well organised and a real credit to Pudsey Pacers. It’s also great to
run an event where the marshals know you by name (years of WYWL stuff) or at
least mention Idle AC (Rhea also commented on this).
Prior to
the 10k, Chris & I ran along side Joe & Katie as they ran the park fun
run. Joe had been ill earlier in the week but still managed to run all the way,
albeit fairly slowly. I ran with Katie, who, 30 seconds into it declared ‘I
don’t like running’. She then spent the next few minutes complaining that ‘I
can’t run. I’ve only got little legs’. In the end I (for the second year!) carried
her around much of the course. However one thing Katie loves is attention. She
quickly realised that she could get loads of it by running the end part of the
course. So at the very end she ran in looking suitably ‘cute’ in her miniature
Idle AC hooded top, all smiles, and loving every minute. She didn’t mind that
she’d finished last!
In
contrast Tom Garlick ran round on his own this year and finished high up the
field.
All three
of them were suitably impressed with their medals, bananas and goody bags and
no doubt we will all be there again (including baby Isabel – who has
already been to 2 races and is only 3 weeks old!) next year – Davina.
Chris, Martin, & Lisa Hall will be taking training to become club first aiders during the summer. If anyone else wants to be considered for this training please let Chris, Davina or Martin know ASAP.
If you’d like
to run the London Marathon in 2008 you will need to enter using the official
entry form that is within the official event magazine called Marathon News.
This will be available in all good sports shops in August. Closing date for
entries will be mid October 2007.
If you
have applied to run or have run the event in the last five years a copy of
Marathon News will be sent to you automatically.
Check out the London Marathon Website for details: www.london-marathon.co.uk
Successful and unsuccessful applicants will
receive a reply in early December 07.
Anyone who is unsuccessful in their entry will be eligible for the draw
for the club entry, which normally takes place at the Christmas Do. Idle AC will have at least 2 club
entries.
In addition members gain an automatic place under
the ‘good for your age’ system. If within 2005 or 2006 you have run between
2.45 and 3.00 (men aged 18-40) or sub 3.15 (men aged 41-59), you qualify
automatically, and must fill in a different form. Women aged 18-49 need to have
run between 3.15and 3.45 to qualify automatically. If you are a woman aged
50-54 the qualifying time is sub 4 hours. For those of you who have achieved
these standards you need to write in giving details and proof of the qualifying
marathon performance (i.e. copy of results and proof of your age). Of course if you happen to have run a
recent sub 2:45 (men) or 3:15 (women) you do get a place on the elite start!
Once the handcuffs were in place, there was no stopping us!
Myself and Ana Lincoln were inseparable for 62 minutes, Ana dressed as a “Robber” and, yes, you’ve guessed it, myself dressed as a Policeman.
8,000 runners/walkers made the race more like a carnival atmosphere with Jane Tomlinson at the start encouraging everyone up the Headrow.
We thoroughly enjoyed the
whole experience, the organisation was meticulously done and I would definitely
recommend anyone to compete in next year’s race. – Pete Helliwell.
PS: Anyone wishing to visit Ana in Armley Jail is quite welcome to do so!!

Saturday 11th Aug offers a good family
day out with the added attraction of not one, but two races. In past years
we’ve had Idle AC vests in the 4 mile road race and in the fell race.
The 4 mile road race runs along beautiful quiet
Yorkshire Dales country lanes and starts at 1.30pm. Entry forms are now available at the club. The fell race is run after the finish
(3pm) of the road race so it’s possible to run both races.
For two Saturdays in August (see above) we can
offer entertainment for all the family with the second being the Burnsall Feast
Sports on Saturday 25th August. The Sports opening starts at 1pm
with the brass band parade, various village sports and side shows. The
afternoon offers an undulating 10mile road race at 2.30pm and the famous
Burnsall Classic Fell race. (AS 1.5 miles/900’) at 5pm. Entry forms available at the club or
visit the website: www.burnsallsports.co.uk
We now have a new red Summer Fleece which will retail at £21.50. See Chris to see what it looks like. The fleeces will be individually ordered to all men’s and women’s sizes and are fitted. See Chris’s fleece and if you’d like one please place your order with Davina.
We have once again affiliated the
club to the Yorkshire Veterans Athletic Association.

I wasn’t
greatly surprised to read the feedback from competitors after the trail race on
the Runners’ World forum and through direct emails. It was the same last year
and the year before – lovely course, and friendly, helpful and
knowledgeable marshals.
The
marshalling team also showed initiative – they were given specific
instructions, but when faced with an unforeseen occurrence, they had the
confidence to change things and redeploy resources to the best effect. This was especially important when we
effected the course change through the football club car park at the beginning,
and had to deal with a sudden problem near the end. Mary used her nouse and experience to sort the car park
quickly and easily. I still don’t
know how Tim’s team dealt with the choice of a locked gate or a stone wall near
the end, and I daren’t ask. All I
know is that the runners appeared at the finish, and made no complaint
whatever. Ron Hill was briefly
looking for the first aid tent, having fallen during his warm up on the canal
steps – the very steps we avoided by changing the course to go through
the car park. He drove home in the
end instead of seeking treatment, but it turned out later that he had broken a
small bone in his hand.
The
marshalling team are made up of a very special group of individuals. This became increasingly apparent as I
followed the progress of Adrian, the sweeper (he’d managed to make 5
walkie-talkies appear, which were a godsend). “I’ve just come past Peter and his home made signs,” he
reported after about an hour.
Despite my concentration on what was happening around the start/finish
area, my imagination ran riot. Had
he printed out messages of encouragement? Had he laminated and mounted my
suggested speech of “Keep left!” ?
I suddenly recalled him spontaneously placing twenty laminated yellow
arrows in my hands at a Thursday session the week before, so I knew he had it
in him. And then an idea
formed in my mind.
At the
London Marathon different parts of the course are characterised by bands
playing music of widely varying genres, and by dancers and entertainers. The local running clubs each take over
a drinks station and invest it with their own character. So it’s like a carnival parade where
the attractions keep still, and the audience move along – from race start
to race finish. And one area where
we scored less highly in our event was atmosphere.
Ok I’m
losing it a bit – I’ve been under a bit of stress lately! I know we can’t
turn the Trail Race into the London.
But I do intend to persuade the Race Committee to let me book a
Senegalese drum ensemble to invigorate and entertain the start/finish area, if
only to prevent Lisa Hall from bringing bagpipe players. If we do this, coupled with perhaps a
little imaginative personalisation of marshalling areas, and of course avoid a
clash with the Eccup 10 miler, it should ensure we have quite an event next
year.
- Chris.
