Top 25 Club Races for 2007: Handicap/ Attendance Scheme - 10 out of 25 possible races to count. Each attendance at a “Club” designated race earns you 5 points (see below). 50% of the required points must be achieved by attendance at training sessions.

Please
note that many races require that competitors carry waterproof clothing, map
and compass for the competitor’s safety. Failure to comply with a race
organiser's requirements will mean that you will be barred from taking part in
the race. Competitors should arrive at races prepared to carry any or all of
the following equipment: Windproof whole body cover, other body cover appropriate
to the conditions, map and compass suitable for navigating the course, whistle,
emergency food (long races). This equipment is mandatory at all Cat A Long and
Medium races.
If this
is the first time you have considered fell racing select a race distance well
under the distance you normally run on the road.
If you
retire during a race you MUST notify the officials at the finish.
If
you like the idea of fell running and would like to have a go please speak to
Chris.
All fell
races are given a grade indicating length and difficulty. Difficulty is
indicated by:
A, no less than 250 feet climb per
mile, not more than 20% on roads, at least 1 mile in length (NASTY);
B, not less than 125 feet climb
per mile, not more than 30% on roads (FAIRLY NASTY);
C, not less than 100 feet of climb
per mile, not more than 40% on roads and contain genuine fell terrain (NOT VERY
NASTY).
Length
is indicated by: L,
12 miles or more; M, 6 miles and over but less than 12 miles; S, under 6 miles.

If you’d like
to run the London Marathon in 2008 you will need to enter using the official
entry form that is within the official event magazine called Marathon News.
This is now available in all good sports shops plus there are copies at the
club. Closing date for entries will be mid October 2007.
If you
have applied to run or have run the event in the last five years a copy of
Marathon News will be sent to you automatically.
Check out the London Marathon Website for details: www.london-marathon.co.uk
Successful and unsuccessful applicants will
receive a reply in early December 07.
Anyone who is unsuccessful in their entry will be eligible for the draw
for the club entry, which normally takes place at the Christmas Do. Idle AC will have at least 2 club
entries.
In addition members gain an automatic place under
the ‘good for your age’ system. If within 2005 or 2006 you have run between
2.45 and 3.00 (men aged 18-40) or sub 3.15 (men aged 41-59), you qualify
automatically, and must fill in a different form. Women aged 18-49 need to have
run between 3.15and 3.45 to qualify automatically. If you are a woman aged
50-54 the qualifying time is sub 4 hours. For those of you who have achieved
these standards you need to write in giving details and proof of the qualifying
marathon performance (i.e. copy of results and proof of your age). Of course if you happen to have run a
recent sub 2:45 (men) or 3:15 (women) you do get a place on the elite start!
We now have a new red Summer Fleece which will retail at £21.50. See Chris to see what it looks like. The fleeces will be individually ordered to all men’s and women’s sizes and are fitted. See Chris’s fleece and if you’d like one please place your order with Davina.
I’ve been
avidly searching for a replacement “Away Weekend with a Great Race”, since a
group of us really enjoyed the 40 mile Keswick to Barrow race (K2B40) last May.
I think I’ve now found a good replacement that is more realistic for everyone
at the club to take part in. Like the K2B40 it is classed as a walk, however 3
distances are offered & it doesn’t have the horrendous hill climbs we had
to endure last time.

As you can see
anyone from our club will do well against these times & I would like to
propose that the club makes a weekend out of it NEXT year. My reason for not
organising anything for this October is because it is a bit short notice &
it clashes with the Leicester marathon that some of you are doing. It would be
nice if some of you could do the 2007 race as a bit of a recce & let me
have your feedback.
Anyone
interested in either doing it this year on their own, or as a club weekend away
next year please contact myself or Davina/Chris to register your interest.
I’ve added
brief details from their website to give you a taster but their website is: http://www.walthamwinder.co.uk where you can
have a look for yourselves.
Waltham Winder History
The Waltham Winder event was originally set up about 15 years ago as a fund
raising event to repair the church clock. It proved to be a major success for
walkers, runners and the church, such that enough funds were raised within a
couple of years.
After an absence of 7 years the Waltham Winder event was re-established to
raise funds for many worthwhile causes within the village community. Now in its
fourth year and with excellent feedback from participants (some of whom
have come back each time) we are looking forward to another great day out. The
event will run whatever the weather!
The Event
Saturday 13th October 2007
Route
The routes cover the Vale of Belvoir around the village of Waltham on the Wolds
with spectacular views towards Belvoir Castle, the family home of the Duke of
Rutland.
All routes will start from the village hall in Waltham and colour coded markers
will be set out along the different route. The routes for all runners and
walkers will be along footpaths, tracks, minor roads and fields.
All routes will be displayed closer to the event.
Registration
Registration will start at 7am at the village hall. Please allow at least 30
minutes before your event start time for registration. On registration you will
be given coded wristbands which you will be required to hand in at checkpoints
throughout the route.
Start Time
The 26 mile start will take place at 8am for runners and 8.15am for walkers.
The 16 mile start will take place at 8.30am for runners and 8.45am for walkers.
The 10 mile start will take place at 9am for runners and 9.15am for walkers.
Finish Time
All runners / walkers are to complete the event by 6pm. You are advised to
bring a torch and warm clothing if you are likely to finish towards this time.
Refreshments
Refreshments will be served on route and at the finish in the village hall.
You can contact me either at the
club or send me an email me to: martin@idleac.co.uk -Martin.
We received the
following email:
Airienteers, the
orienteering club for West Yorkshire, hope that your club members will find the
following event of interest. We'd be grateful if you could distribute the details
around your members.
The Aire Valley Long-O will be a physical challenge for the club runner mixed
with the added element of navigating your way around the woodlands and
moorlands of the Aire Valley.
With a variety of course lengths, from 4km to 21km you can choose the level of
challenge you want. Remember though that these are the lengths that the planner
thinks somebody would run if they were to pick the routes to go and executed
that choice of route perfectly. If you get the navigation wrong, it could be
considerably longer!
For more details on the event, go to
http://www.orienteering.ilkley.org/ClubDocs/Long-O_flyer_2007.doc
For more details on the sport of orienteering, go to
http://www.britishorienteering.org.uk/asp/homepage.asp
Competitors should run in full-length trousers (lycra/Ron Hill type leggings
are perfect) and would be advised to bring a compass (and know how to use it)
although you may be able to borrow one from registration.
If like me you like to try and do your bit for the environment and raise money for charity you might want to consider recycling your used ink cartridges or old phones.
Visit the website: cartridges4charity.co.uk for further details. It has a useful list of cartridges that can and
can’t be recycled.
If you have other items (almost anything) to recycle visit: www.recycle.co.uk
We have once again affiliated the
club to the Yorkshire Veterans Athletic Association.

It’s quite late now on August 30th. We get behind on the Gossip but we
always get it out. It’s usually my
fault because I haven’t written my bit, despite hours spent in the Symposium
looking for inspiration.
It bothers me when things don’t seem to be happening as
they should be at the Club, and I try to find ways to make things better or
suggest improvements, often through this article.
Many people come to distance running because of the
element of individual choice which can be made in training and
competition. I hear with pleasure
of people going to this race or that, and Davina carefully records in this
magazine all the results that she finds out about.
Yet almost every race contains a team competition. Usually it is the first three men or
women across the line for the Club who count. Clearly we aren’t getting teams out in races at the moment,
and a casualty of this is the Club’s identity as a competing and participating
group in events.
On the one hand my instinct is to look at the Club races
list and highlight upcoming events at Club nights. Several people have talked informally about the
Yorkshireman, where Chris Stubbs defends his title next month. At the end of September the Horsforth
10k seems the perfect opportunity to restore that group identity – at
Woodhouse Grove it is very local indeed.
On the other hand, autumn approaches. I have to go to a meeting in two weeks
where the five fixtures in the West Yorkshire Winter League will be set. In our league the team is everything.
We must be ready.
There. It’s
finished. It’s about teams, not
just individuals. And I only
mentioned cross country once!
- Chris.
