Please
note that many races require that competitors carry waterproof clothing, map
and compass for the competitor’s safety. Failure to comply with a race
organiser's requirements will mean that you will be barred from taking part in
the race. Competitors should arrive at races prepared to carry any or all of
the following equipment: Windproof whole body cover, other body cover
appropriate to the conditions, map and compass suitable for navigating the
course, whistle, emergency food (long races). This equipment is mandatory at
all Cat A Long and Medium races.
If this
is the first time you have considered fell racing select a race distance well
under the distance you normally run on the road.
If you
retire during a race you MUST notify the officials at the finish.
If
you like the idea of fell running and would like to have a go please speak to
Chris.
All fell
races are given a grade indicating length and difficulty. Difficulty is
indicated by:
A, no less than 250 feet climb per
mile, not more than 20% on roads, at least 1 mile in length (NASTY);
B, not less than 125 feet climb
per mile, not more than 30% on roads (FAIRLY NASTY);
C, not less than 100 feet of climb
per mile, not more than 40% on roads and contain genuine fell terrain (NOT VERY
NASTY).
Length
is indicated by: L,
12 miles or more; M, 6 miles and over but less than 12 miles; S, under 6 miles.

If you want a fast, flat pb 10k

or enter on line via www.sports-fitness.com
In the
second event, hosted by Dewsbury at Chickenley!! 181 took part, including 59
women. Idle's contribution was 18 runners. There were strong runs from
Chris Stubbs, Simon and Adrian and fine performances from Ammie &Clare.
However our ‘Star’ performer has to be Judith who not only improved on her
first race performance but was third counter in our women’s team.
Congratulations to Chris, Simon & Ammie who finished as 2nd Vets
team. The next event is at Pudsey
on 6th Jan 08.
This is the main league that we encourage members of Idle AC to run.
To count for individual awards you must complete all five events, and your scores will be added together. At the end of each race each individual is given a tag which denotes their points scored in the race. This works as follows: The first male runner gets 200 points, second gets 199, third gets 198 and so on. The first female runner gets 100 points, second gets 99, third gets 98 and so on. So in addition to the team positions, individual results are available after each event and individual and category winners are presented with individual trophies at the Presentation Evening held at the end of the season (great bash).
There
are 8 clubs
that form the WYWL: Idle A.C, Pudsey Pacers, Skipton A.C., Leeds & Bradford
Tri, Dewsbury Road Runners, Baildon Runners, Stainland Lions and St. Bede’s. The remaining fixtures for 2007/8 are
confirmed as follows:
Date Host
club Venue
3.Jan 6th Pudsey Pudsey.
4. Jan 27th Stainland Lions Stainland
5. Feb 24th Skipton Skipton.
All will be 11am starts. Full details will be circulated to club
members prior to each event.
Whilst
the League does offer individual trophy positions, its primary objective is team
competition. The five team scores are added together
to decide the following team trophies:
1st Combined Team, 2nd
Combined Team, 3rd Combined Team.
1st Male Team.
1st Female team.
1st Vets Team
(combination of male/females).
A club team is the first seven men to cross the line (which must include 2 vets), and the first three women (including 1 vet), in each event.
The vets’ team is the 2 male and the one female counting
vets added together.
Different runners may score in different races - it’s
just first past the post on the day.
The first Combined Team can enter the National Cross
Country Final and the 2nd Combined Team can enter the Plate Race at
the National Final which will take place at Nottingham in March 07. Further details will be circulated
prior to each event. This year’s presentation night (March 08) will be hosted
by Baildon Runners (Details to follow nearer the time).
This month we welcome Sean Duffey. Sean has been
looking at joining a club for a while and has now realised what Idle has to
offer. Sean is keen to get his race times down, compete for the club but is
only keen to join in social activities (as he proved at the Christmas Do).
Welcome.
PS Sean doesn’t have transport & hopes club
members can help him out with lifts to any races. See Sean direct at the club
to swop phone numbers or contact Chris/Davina & we will pass on his number.
Sean has already entered a few races in 2008 which other members might be
doing, these are:
Dewsbury 10K 03/02/08 9:00 dewsburyroadrunners.co.uk
Great Northwest Half 24/02/08 11:00 Hilton Hotel Blackpool

This is Bank
Holiday weekend, no rushing back to work!
Sean says that if anyone fancies a
sightseeing trip to Edinburgh he’d be glad to hear from you and that he’d be
willing to help out with petrol costs.
We drew 2 names from the 3 rejections in the London Marathon draw at the
Christmas party. The lucky
winners are. Amnuay Scott and Davina Smith. They join Hannah Peacock, Jo
Belcher & Ana Lincoln on the start line (A bit of a girly weekend!). Good
luck to all who are running.
PS The Spen 20 is on 16th March. Despite the tough
course with snowy weather Idle AC are usually out in force as it’s ideal
marathon training.
Congratulations to Debbie &
Gary on the birth of their baby daughter, Mia who was born on Sunday 9th
December weighing 7lb 7oz. Our love and best wishes to the three of you from
all at Idle AC.
Hi Chris & Davina
Could you please pop
this email on the Idle website, if there is enough space and time could you
also put it in the next gossip.
Debbie and I
would like to thank everyone at Idle AC for the gifts and cards which we
have received following the birth of our daughter, Mia.
We have been
inundated with so many presents etc that we have been unable to say thank
you to everyone personally. Just goes to show what a friendly club Idle AC is.
Again, our thanks to
everyone. Hope everyone has a great Christmas.
- Gary, Debbie
& Mia

We started our first ‘Run for
All’ (first Thursday of each month) on Thursday 4th Oct and it proved to be a huge success. Like the October & November dates
the December event proved to be even better & it again proved to be a very
popular night. We all stayed together as a group with lots of running back for
the front end runners and a pace that would be suitable for ANY member. Please
continue to all come along as it’s a night when we encourage members of all
abilities to attend the club (7pm). It
would be especially good to see members of the Wednesday Group there. The next
Run for All Night is on Thursday 3rd January 08!
We all send our congratulations
to Julie & Jem who married on 1st December in a private ceremony
at Harrogate. Julie & Jem have
invited everyone to their celebration party on Friday 25th January
at 7.30pm at Chevin County Park Hotel, Yorkgate, Otley. If everyone (all
welcome) can let Davina know if you’re going by 5th January so Julie
has a rough idea of numbers. Julie
will now be known as Julie Parker-Heys. Love & best wishes to you both from
all at Idle AC.
I’ve received the following text
from Julie…Thank you so very much for the lovely card & voucher. It was a
lovely surprise. We will spend it wisely on something splendid. Poss for new
bathroom. Luv Julie & Jem xx
For
those of you that can’t get enough cross country with the WYWL & above
events you might want to consider running the Yorkshire Vets Cross country
championships on Sunday 13th Jan 08. They are held at Greenhead
School and Cliffe Castle, Keighley. The distance is 5k for women plus 70+ men
and a 10k for men aged 50-69, both starting at 1pm. There is also a third race
which starts at approx 2pm and will be a 10k for men 35-49..Please let Chris
know if you want to run no later than 31st December 07.No late
entries. For teams it’s 3 to score in men 35-39, 50-59, 60-69,women 35-44,45+
and 4 to score men 40-49. £4 per member and club vests must be worn.
The All time (Hall of Fame) records are now available to view on our website and it includes the fastest times in all age categories for both present and past members. From 1st October we therefore have two sets of records, as follows:
· One for current club members which includes a few ‘available’ records for current members to aim for. This list will be kept updated & published in Idle Gossip & on the website. Each time a current club record is broken a ‘modest’ prize will be awarded. Records will be deleted from the current list when a member resigns.
· In addition there will be another list ‘Hall of Fame’ records. This will include past members who currently hold records. Each time an ‘All time’ record is broken a prize will be awarded. The ‘Hall of fame’ records will be published on the website & in the yearly record cards.
· Club records can only be set by first claim members.
If you want to help the Woodland Trust plant 24,000 trees then simply recycle your Christmas cards at either WHSmith, Tesco, TK Maxx, or Marks & Spencer. They need 100 million cards so hopefully Idle AC can do our bit to help!
Idle AC will be once again
affiliating the club to the Yorkshire Veterans Athletic Association (YVAA) in
early 08. The first grand prix race of 2008 will be held on Sunday 3rd
Feb at Horsforth at 10am. After the race there will be the prize presentation
for 2007 and the AGM. Further dates will be circulated once we know them.
So we could be in the right place after all! A Government
report this last year blamed urban areas for much of the obesity epidemic,
since they lack the features which encourage people to exercise.
Runners of course maintain an ambivalent relationship
with the city. I’ve been for a run
in Keswick on a winter’s night, and actually pitied the members of Keswick
AC. I ran out of streetlights
after a mile and was confronted by inky blackness. Likewise on the North Yorkshire coast – I ran up and
down the main street in Hinderwell several times, barely able to see under
streetlamps which obviously contained 40 watt bulbs. Yet the whole of nocturnal West Yorkshire is bathed in an orange
glow visible from space. In winter we inhabit the city streets, and could run a
50 mile circuit without any difficulty in seeing our way. OK we’re stuck on the roads, but have a
huge variety of routes.
On the other hand, of course, we share the streets. This year was the first time in twenty
years of running that I have been hit by a missile. I was hit squarely in the chest on Leeds Road, by an egg
delivered from a speeding car. Behind me as I bent over, thinking I had been
shot, Jo offered the view that she was glad I was there. I smiled wryly at her gratitude, but
she would have got it in the face at that height, so I didn’t begrudge her
that. Having upset one or two
people in my time, I would have assumed I had been selected as a target, but behind
us Ana got the same treatment. Bizarrely, the raw egg started to cook on my
chest as I ran home. The verbal
abuse is less of a problem for me as a teacher who knows that many kids just
crave adult attention and can’t get it at home, but it’s still occasionally
depressing hearing the moronic repetition by youths who lack the imagination or
opportunity to do anything with their own wasted lives.
The gist of the Government Report indicates that we are
in fact doing just the right thing – we are getting out and reclaiming
the streets. Its recommendations
are that urban spaces should be redesigned to make them usable by a variety of
types of people at all hours of the day, and that they should be conducive to
the taking of regular, safe, urban exercise. So once the environment is
designed for exercise, with more green space and traffic free areas, more
people do it, and we are left alone by the morons, who are swamped with
runners, walkers, cyclists and roller skaters, so don’t know who to shout what
at. On the one hand we will gain, but on the other a real identified public
health issue will be addressed. As the report says,
“The existence of safe and attractive green space designed to encourage
physical exercise and play is of increasing importance for public health.
Physical inactivity is a major preventable health risk and tackling it should
be a public health priority. Current data show that only 32% of UK adults take
30 minutes of moderate exercise five times a week, which is the threshold for
improving cardiovascular health. The issue is particularly important for
children, where inactivity is helping to create a new generation who are more
likely to become inactive and obese adults. For example, over 30% of children
in England are overweight and nearly 20% are obese. The rising trend in obesity
results from a variety of factors, but one element may be less access to
recreation and exercise. Parents and children may not feel safe using
car-dominated streets, and evidence shows “that children and young people do
not play out as much as they used to and that their opportunities for free play
are restricted”. At the same time, the number of children travelling to school by car has doubled over the last twenty
years, while the number walking and cycling has fallen, and it has been argued
that “We have ‘designed’ a lot of incidental exercise out of our lives.”
Luckily we have already ‘designed in’ incidental exercise
to our lives. Yet we may have to wait for some little while for Bradford to be
re-developed into a safe and enjoyable urban park. Until then at least, we have uninterrupted Club nights, long
Sunday runs, and the end of winter in prospect.
